View Full Version : "Ghosting" on 1080i content - Bad splitter?

Just a curiosity, I had an LN46B550 Samsung HDTV for a few days and noticed HORRIBLE ghosting over 1080i. I know it wasn't the TV because Blu-Rays/Videogames didn't do it.

I was pondering my setup and remembered that Time Warner installed a splitter to get TV into the bedroom of my apartment. I was curious if the splitter could be the cause of this problem. I didn't have time to test it as I returned the TV within the 30 day period to be on the safe side.

If the splitter can be the cause, are there splitters out there that you can buy? Are any of them better than any others? I can't imagine Time Warner gives the best signal technology to every one of their customers...

Are you saying that you had not ghosting with 720p content?
Are you sure you were receiving 1080i HD content with your digital tuner and not analog content since digital content is not normally subject to ghosting, what channel numbers were had the most ghosting?
Some splitters degrade signals too much but they don't cause ghosting.

You raise another interesting question, NatGeo HD does not ghost, yet NBC/ABC do.

Neither channel suffered from ghosting on a 42" Westinghouse TX-F430S that was exchanged as per BB PSP.

Is it a deficiency in Samsung technology? I had switched to a DVR box but didn't think to set it to 720p...will that fix the problem?

Natgeo is a cable channel not an OTA channel.
Again I ask what channel # are you haveing problems with? And are you receiving that channel direct into your TV or from an STB and if from a STB what resolution are you outputting over what interface to the TV?

705 is a big problem. I am receiving it over an STB with what I assume to be a 1080i signal (don't have a TV atm to test that)

Ghosting is unlikely to be caused by any interference in a QAM or 8VSB OTA signal - so any splitting of the digital broadcast signal is unlikely to cause this effect.

If you are routing analogue component from a set-top box and splitting this then that might introduce some analogue ringing/ghosting.

Otherwise the ghosting is likely to be either a deficiency in the way your TV handles some content (have you reduced any sharpness control to see if it is being caused by this?) or it is likely to be present on the source. (Fox has an issue with excessive edge enhancement on some content I believe at the moment?)

Again, please let us know what resolution are you using over what interface from the STB to the TV?
What make/model STB do you have?
You can use the INFO button on your Samsung remote to find out what resolution it is receiving from the STB.

The fact that ABC broadcasts as its source only 720p content sort of makes it sound as if the Samsung is where the problem is. As long as the signal is in the digital domain, which it typically is at least all the way to the DVR or TV, it is absolutely immune to ghosting, which also points to the TV as the issue. It not happening with other TVs points away from the DVR (and back to the Samsung), possibly an incompatibility between the Samsung and certain display formats of the DVR.
