Boy, I thought this would be an easy question to find an answer to, but I keep seeing conflicting answers depending on various setups.

I have a slim PS2 and would like to hook it up to my Yamaha RX-V595a AVR (circa 1999, DD & DTS 5.1, no Pro-Logic II). I have no desire to use it as a DVD player or care about the DD 5.1 during the cutscenes. I'm just looking for ProLogic surround during game play. Should I use digital or analog audio out to my Yamaha receiver? My logic tells me to send it via digital and let the receiver convert and decode to Pro Logic, but I've seen some articles say the opposite. Please help.

And no, I don't have an optical cable at home to test to see which one sounds the best to my ears. I was just hoping that a few people have tried it both ways and found the best solution.

Thanks in advance.

I went optical with the PS2 just because I could....less wires & digital delivery made it a simple choice.

Thanks for the reply - I was thinking the same thing. I re-read my original post, and perhaps I should just simplify my question:

Since most of my games are Dolby Pro-Logic II encoded, will my Yamaha receiver be able to decode Pro-Logic (not II) from either the optical or digital input?

I'm not up on my audio processing but I thought Prologic I/II was simply a method of matrixing a stereo mix...so it should do PL I/II regardless of the method of delivering 2 channels to your receiver...whereas DD & DTS are encoded streams & need to be delivered digitally unless processing is done beforehand....

It was easier for me to run the optical, so I did. I'm using component cables and an optical cable from Monoprice. It works great. The optical cost me less than $2.
