View Full Version : Lighting Dimmer For Logitech 1100 & 890
Chrisx510 05-05-09, 07:50 PM Im going to start installing lighting in my theater next week. I plan to get a Harmony 1100 or 890 remote since my devices will be stored away in a cabinet.
I would like to already have a light dimmer in the room so when I do purchase a 1100/890 I can just program the remote to turn off the lights/dim.
What kind of dimmer do I need to do this? I called logitech but they said they didn't know exactly.
remoteshoppe 05-05-09, 10:01 PM Lutron makes an IR controlled switch called the Maestro that may be available at your local Home Depot. if you're looking for the one switch that may be the easiest way to go.
NkySpike 05-05-09, 11:36 PM Harmony 890 has Zwave capability, Harmony 1100 does not ( I wish it did )...
PartsExpress has a good price on the 890 Pro....
I'm also using two ( a third on it's way) Intermatic HA06C Zwave wall switches...
They all play good together so far...
Hope the info helps you out.

bryansj 05-06-09, 07:48 AM If you get the 890 you can get Z-wave switches which do not need line-of-sight. If you get the 1100 you will have to get an IR solution. If you have an IR solution then you could use virtually any universal remote, but you would need line-of-sight to your switches or IR hub.
xboxFreak 05-06-09, 11:29 AM Not to hijack, but does anyone know if the Harmony Remotes are compatible with the X10 WA12A dimmer plates? What about the WS12A plates? They are very affordable compared to the Lutron line...
I checked compatibility at the harmony site, but when entering the device i had to call it an X10 Pro and it DID pass...but the X10 site doesnt classify like that...

This will do what you want with IR. http://www.x10.com/products/x10_ir543.htm
Chrisx510 05-06-09, 08:16 PM Is this the dimmer I would need to get for the $1100?
http://www.lutron.com/CMS400/page.aspx?id=16947
Also is there any cheaper ones the lutron or would lutron be the best solution?
Chrisx510 05-07-09, 01:22 PM Anyone know if Lutron is the way to go or another brand?
I would go with the URC remotes.
www.universalremote.com
go to the pro section, and then lighting
Its more $$, but way better integration...etc
Sorry to bring this old thread back to life.
I purchased a new Harmony 890 and all this RF, Z-wave is new to me.
I have two light switches that I want to be able to control with the H890. The light switches are not in direct line of sight, so IR is out of the question.
I drop by this one store to ask if I can just purchase two Z-wave dimmer only and have my H890 control it. I was told by this one store that I needed light dimmers, software program and a remote before I can use H890. Is this correct?
What products do I need to purchase to make this work with the H890?
Can I not just purchase two Z-wave light dimmer and program the H890 to control it? TIA
bryansj 11-11-09, 08:16 AM Go to Amazon.com and search for Z-wave. The Intermatic ones are about $30. You do not need anything execpt for the 890, dimmer switches, and of course the 890's setup software.
Thanks bryansj for the respond. I don't see one thats $30. Is there a particular model number that you can recommend?
Whats the difference between 600w and more w?
And whats the difference between 2-way and 3-way dimmers?
Sorry for all the nobb questions.

Looks like Amazon doesn't carry the basic Intermatic switches anymore.
The 600w switches would be based on the number and wattage of the bulbs (six 100W bulbs max). 2-way would be single pole switches and 3-way would be triple pole. If you can turn your light on from only one switch you can use the single pole 2-way. If you can turn your light on from two switches then you need to use triple pole 3-way switches.

Get a (some) free Z-wave lamp modules when you buy an 890 or 890 Pro.
http://www.zwaveproducts.com/
IIRC the shipping was like $10 each for mine.
highfigh 11-14-09, 04:06 PM Remember- when ganging dimmers in one box, they need to be de-rated by at least 20% because of the additional heat.

Hi highfigh, don't understand "when ganging dimmers in one box" and "de-rated by least 20%".
I just want to switch out the light switch on the wall (at two different area of the room).
