I just picked up with this title on HD-DVD. Playing on a A3 connected over HDMI to a JVC D-ILA set (1080i) I am noticing quite severe black crush in many of the darker scenes. This is something that doesn't occur on most of my HD-DVD titles and I am wondering if it's just the mastering of the title itself. The PQ is pretty average IMHO and the sound while ostensibly DD+ has very little surround sound action going on. But for $8 new I guess I can't complain too much!

Timecop is one of the most mediocre titles I own in red. The list of it's problems is long and endless.
Well it's marginally better than the only other version I own which is on LD :)

It's an older HDDVD (which are DD+) and frankly plays just fine. $8 is pretty good. Got a new HDDVD for $5, and works great.
Peter Hyams likes all of his movies to be impenetrably dark. They pretty much all look like that.

^^^ Agree, but "End of Days" looks a lot better than "Timecop" (both were photographed/directed by Hyams) so maybe it comes down to age of print ('96 versus '99), quality of film stock and/or budget. And let's face it, a Schwarzenegger action flick will always have better everything (including unintelligible leading man accent dialog) than a JCVD movie. :)

Actually JCVD is quite intelligible in the movie. It's just that in the climactic final fight sequences, it's so dark I found it hard to see who was fighting whom :-)

It's a safe bet that whomever is doing the ass-kicking during the climactic fight is Van Damme... going out on a limb here! ;):p
It's been quite a while since I watched the Timecop HD DVD. I don't remember having any serious problems with black crush. I do remember the colors (especially flesh tones) being oversaturated, though.
