so I was watching the dark knight on blu-ray (bdp-51fd) and the audio seemed quiet and kinda weak in pure mode. I switched it over to movie mode and the audio immediately got louder and more full. Is that normal? If so, can I make pure mode sound like that as well?

Change the audio settings to match.

Unfortunately, you must be using the built-in speakers! You need to use an AVR, or the equivalent, with an appropriate 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system to get decent sound. The picture settings then will have no effect whatsoever on the sound.

Of course a full surround system is going to sound MUCH better than just listening to the 111's side speakers. I'm sure ryanhugh knows that. His post was about internal settings.
In addition to tweaking the various sound settings associated with whatever AV mode, plugging in a powered subwoofer is an effective and inexpensive way to enhance the audio experience without a full surround system. After upgrading to an AVR and speakers, the sub (if it has multiple inputs) can be integrated into the big system and still used with the 111 alone for regular TV watching.
