View Full Version : Building a home theater
cachenco 05-10-09, 11:59 AM I'm in the process of building my home theater with the following:
Jvc rs10 with Revel Concerta Speakers M-10 front and center, B-120 subwoofer and M-8 rear; Onkyo TX-SR 806 receiver. Should I get a professional to do the installation and video calibration? Im not too savy in this area, I have installed previous 5.1 systems but never a front end HD projector system like this. I'm also buying a Vutec screen (120").
Thanks
Update:
I will look for professional installation, any suggestions in Broward County, FL?

Yes, and this should be a list of credentials and references.

Jvc rs10 with Revel Concerta Speakers and Sony 7.1 receiver 100 watts/channel. Should I get a professional to do the installation and video calibration? Im not too savy in this area, I have installed previous 5.1 systems but never a front end HD projector system like this.

RE: Projector...a fine choice...arguably one of the best in the under $5k range. As someone who sees these all the time, they are hit and miss out of the box (from a calibration standpoint). Even if you hang it yourself, you would benefit from having a pro fine tune it.
RE: Revel's...another fine choice. Speakers are EXTREMELY subjective. You could take 10 people and have them listen to a set, and you'd get 11 different opinions. :) If you have auditioned them and like them, that is your answer.
RE: Sony receiver...probably a bit off on this. The Revel's are a pretty high end speaker and could seriously benefit from a better audio receiver. That being said, you need to listen to the combo to know for sure (only you can really answer that, I just personally wouldn't match the Sony to them).
As far as general installation...depends on how handy you are, what level of quality work you expect, and your knowledge.
hd_newbie 05-12-09, 12:12 PM Is 100 watts enough to power revels? That sounds a bit low to me.

An exaggerated 100 at that...

cachenco 05-14-09, 05:38 AM If not the Sony, what do you recommend for a good match receiver?

Emotiva has some pretty solid separates/combos. Also, look at Rotel, even Outlaw. Meridian if you want to go really high end/expensive.
I agree though, you don't get Revel speakers and hook them up to a Sony receiver. :)
Jason Turk 05-14-09, 09:36 AM Lots of options, check into the audio section of the forum. But you are going to want something more substantial for the Revel's...
hd_newbie 05-14-09, 03:07 PM what is your budget? I like anthem personally. Statement line has plenty of power but expensive
cachenco 05-15-09, 07:14 AM When looking for a good receiver to match the Revel Concerta (m10/c10) should I based my research on the w/channel?
What can you tell me about a Vutec for the fixed screen?
Have you heard of the Redfox screens? How they compare with the Vutec?

Well no. See how much power a receiver/amp has IS important. But, unfortunately there are many ways of rating them. So a Sony 100watts may not be the same as another companies 100 watts. The current of the unit actually comes into play more...sort of like horsepower vs. torque in a car.
In any event, to really drive the Revel's well (cleanly as well as with decent volume), you probably should consider a separate amp. That doesn't have to equate to expensive (though many are), but it is still probably best.
Jason Turk 05-15-09, 09:59 AM Oh forgot...Vutec makes good screens. Never heard of Redfox though.
