View Full Version : XG In HI-Z sync mode
Hi
What exactly does this mode and when is it useful?
When i switch from 75 Ohms to Hi-Z the picture improves,it gives a cleaner and smoother result.
I don't know if this mode is putting more strain on the XG or the connected equipment but prefer it a lot.
Other then a high impedance the manual has nothing much to tell about this mode or when to use it.
Is it well advised to leave it in this mode and is there a specific reason why it looks better this way then the normal advised 75 Ohms sync mode?
Any info much appreciated.
thanks

Tim in Phoenix 05-11-09, 09:00 PM Hello
Video and sync are run down long cables sometimes, and due to the high frequencies involved, the signals could reflect back up the cable and cause problems, so the correct connection is called termination where the signals see 75 ohms to ground. Also, if one needed to connect multiple displays in series, all but the last would be set to High-Z and the last in the line provides 75 ohm termination.

Mark_A_W 05-11-09, 10:48 PM I'm surprised you see a difference.
To my mind, it either syncs properly or it doesn't.
Can you see a difference in 1:1 black white test patterns? Or image stability?
How do you mean "cleaner and smoother"?
Thanks Tim for the explanation.
Mark it has better colors better blacks more depth/stability and less noise/ smear more filmlike for a better word, and it is especially noticeable with hi def content.
I'm using the XG with the Moomme hdmi EXT HD box connected with approx. 12 ft. rgbhv Canare that is not too long is it / can it damage the equipment in this HI-Z mode ?

Mark_A_W 05-14-09, 08:01 PM It just doesn't make that much sense to me, unless it was struggling to sync before.
Is your black level changing when you flick the switch? Black clamping could be affected.
I will try it on my XG.
I don't think you will hurt anything.

Mark_A_W 05-15-09, 09:10 AM Ok, I tried it.
Didn't seem to make any difference at all.
I could see the picture twitch when I changed modes, but it looked identical.
I was looking at test patterns.
Thanks for the effort.
I own the XG now approx. 12 years and with rgbhv to rgbhv there was indeed no difference.
With the Moome box,it is probably with this hdmi box related, i see a very positive difference as stated with unchanged blacklevel.
What do you use for hdmi to rgbhv, HD Fury ?

I don't.
HDMI is a nightmare.
I run RGBHV from a NEC switcher, driven by a PC.
Interesting ,how do you get blu ray/ hd dvd 1080i/p to work through component?
Hdmi wouldn't be exactly my first choise either but with blu ray/ hd dvd it is hard to ignore.

Mark_A_W 05-16-09, 08:07 PM Component?
It is a PC, it runs RGBHV (VGA), not component.
Yes, it has a Bluray/HD-DVD drive.
I'm trying very hard to ignore HDMI. I've tried it, and I ran away screaming.
