Hello all,
I have a LG 30FZ4D 30" CRT 1080i HDTV. I purchased it around Nov 2005. Recently about every other day (that I notice) the screen has been randomly and periodically turning yellow (not flashing) for about 2-5 seconds.
A wave of yellow will wash over the whole screen making the image almost B&W but predominantly yellow and then be gone, almost like a degauss effect but all yellow and not distorting the images. By the time I notice it happened its gone again.
Heres where it gets really strange, I have noticed the issue when viewing DVD's (HDMI connection) and also when viewing TV through my set-top DVR (HDMI connection) and if I rewind either, the same effect will reappear at the same spots/scenes again!? Weird right?
I have absolutely no clue what this could be. Any takers?
Thanks!
Does it do it when the HDMI connections are Not used (Component/Svideo/Composite video, internal tuner)?

I havent noticed it anywhere else yet but, I dont have much hooked up via component/composite anymore.
the only things I have hooked up that are not over HDMI are wii/xbox/ps2

It's most likely bad tube connector, or issues with the video amplifier. Could be pretty easy to fix but it will require disassembly.
Also the fact that it's doing it on the same scenes is either coincidence, or the brightness/contrast levels in that particular picture are triggering the issue.

Its definately not a coincidence, as every time I have noticed it I have rewound the scene and it repeats at exactly the same point/duration. It happened last night during Lost.
The contrast/brightness trigger hypothesis is the only thing that makes any sense to me but the scenes where it occurs arent vastly different than the rest of the film/show and it usually happens during a scene not at the beginning of one..
How would I fix something like that? I have moderate tech skills I.E. I know more than the average Joe but less than a specialist.
Thanks

jdre's previous post got me thinking. Maybe it's a flaw of the DVR not the TV set. Does it also happen on DVDs?
If you are handy with a soldering iron it wouldn't hurt to open up the set and redo the connections of the video amplifier IC and the tube connector. The video amplifier is that circuit located on the little board at the back of the CRT. Be sure to leave the set for a few minutes after unplugging it so any high voltage is discharged, then remove the board from the CRT's neck, redo the soldering and put it back on.
Alternatively, you can check it without soldering by using the handle of a well-insulated screwdriver to lightly tap an edge of that little board while the set is running. If it goes yellow when you tap the board, it's bad solder connections and redoing them as i said above will get rid of it. If nothing happens to the picture while tapping the edge of the board, the problem is most likely in the DVR box or HDMI circuitry not in the video stage. Unfortunately i am not experienced with HDMI so i can't help you there.

Yes, it happens with DVD's as well as the DVR.
I havent noticed it w/ Bluray's yet but I dont watch them as much as I do the DVR/DVD.
Thanks for the input.
