View Full Version : Positioning workaround??
madhorizons 05-12-09, 02:04 AM I've been reading through the various setup infos, guides, etc (including the Dolby/Grammy/THX/etc stuff)......great info!!!
I do have a question pertaining to my particular setup, though (see attached pic for photoshopped visual representation...it's how i roll LOL).
In my oddly shaped room, we had to stuff the TV in a corner area (between fireplace & office). Eye/ear level is ~1/2 way on the TV (about 4'). Currently the center channel is on 2d shelf WAY below the TV (about 1.5' off the ground) and we know that isn't the right way to go. Given our situation, we're probably going to have to mount the center channel in the corner on a shelf, but that is ~4' back from the TV.
Our front L/R are Polk Monitor 30s that are coming in Wednesday, and I will have to get stands for them.
The questions....
1. Is the center channel being 4' back from the L/R going to be a major issue?
2. Is it being in a corner going to be a major issue?
3. Are there any stands out there that can SAFELY support the 10lb Monitor 30s and be able to reach ~4' high? Would it be broadly detrimental to experience having them slightly below ear level?
4. Based on the attached pics, are there any other options you may be able to recommend?
Thanks in advance!!
Easyaspie 05-12-09, 02:44 PM Put the system along the right wall in the diagram. However then you would have to contend with 1 surround speaker possibly being next to or mounted on a wall and the other stand mounted.
madhorizons 05-12-09, 03:04 PM Thanks. I should of included in my post that the current location is where its gotta stay. We have no give on TV stand positioning. The rest of the room is windows, entrance way, doors, fireplace, and computer desk. If we moved it to the right wall in the room, we'd be facing out....that's something we don't wanna do (we tried that before even considering HT setup). Nothing more annoying than trying to watch TV and headlights shine in line of sight. That and it wouldn't flow comfortably for room-to-room movement (for us).
Attached is a panoramic (poorly done btw) of the TV "looking out".....b/c I suck at them, the proportions are distorted.
So ya...unfortunately, the corner the TVs shoved in is where it's gotta stay. I understand what you're saying and that WOULD provide the best case scenario to get an evenly distributed stage, but I'm stuck w/ what I'm stuck with.
Thx for the reply...keep em comin!
Easyaspie 05-12-09, 04:52 PM Ok, the TV stays. I don't have any real advice to offer. I think the left surround is going to cause you problems being more at your side while the right will be further behind you. I know the diagram doesn't show that, but your panarama shot appears like that would be the case.
As to your OP, you should try to get that CC even with the front edge of your TV. If it's behind by as much as 4' that will not work so well. The TV will be blocking it since you will obviously sitting with your ears lower than the top edge of the TV. If anything mounting it higher than the TV and angling it down toward your listening position will work better.
Good luck.:)
madhorizons 05-12-09, 05:59 PM LOL...thx.
I have a 3rd option I think I'm going to try first....
When placed in FRONT of the TV, it's covering only ~1/4-1/2" of the screen...so I think I may try to build a base that's slightly bigger than the bottom of the TV to elevate it. That will keep it fairly close (may be tad lower) to ear/eye level, but will allow me to put it in less than a foot from the L/R.
As for the surrounds....you can't tell from the picture, but as we have a "V" shaped couch (really L, but it's angled as a V with the center point being center to TV)...both the L & R surround pretty much are @ 90 degrees from the point of the V....it sounds to us (aka...our "untrained" ears) like they're pretty even...if anything, i'll bump up the left by +1db. If I were to draw a line from the left to right surrounds, it'd almost form a perfect "A" across the listening area.
Thx for the feedback!
Do you think option "3" about raising the TV and putting the center on the top shelf in front of the TV would be ok?
nlsteele 05-12-09, 06:35 PM Most of what I've read around these forums suggests that you'd be best off having the front baffles of your L, C, and R speakers as close to the same plane as possible, with below TV angled up being often preferred to above TV angled down (although I believe that the above method does have the advantage of a wider angle of dispersion comparatively and less chance of reinforcement effects from the floor making it sound "boomy").
As far as the surrounds, I'd try and get them into as close to the same alignment as possible, so even with the listening position and pointed straight at each other, same height too. That way you won't have any noticeable localization differences between the surround channels. I've got an awkward room as well and have to angle the surrounds slightly in front of the listening position to prevent them being literally 1' away from my head.
Once you've got those things lined up as much as possible given your constraints, Audyssey should be able to take care of much of the rest (e.g., my left surround is about 11' away while the right is 4 ' away, but Audyssey was able to delay, phase, and attenuate them to act in very nice synchrony).
Hope you have better luck once your Monitors arrive. :)
aleywwu 05-12-09, 06:54 PM i have a polk cs2 center channel sitting in front of my tv (40 inch samsung lcd) on the same stand surface that the tv is on. i used 3 phone books to raise the tv high enough so that it's not obscured by the center channel, and everything has worked out great.
i think your 3rd option is best - it'll keep you center closer to ear level and avoid any awkward corner/behind the tv placement that you'd otherwise have to deal with.

That's the solution I'm moving too basically, once my (don't judge me, she's awesome) wife builds a riser for the TV (she's got access to a full wood shop with her work, I don't). My current center channel would otherwise occlude about the bottom 4" of the TV. Right now, got it below and angled up:

previously had the Onkyo center on the cabinet as described

Don't think ill of me for not having the center channel up at the front surface of the cabinet, I didn't detect any muddying of the sound and it looked worse sitting up like that. :)
aleywwu 05-12-09, 07:19 PM ^^^ man, those speakers are pretty. i'll take some pics of my rig to post back in the 606 thread when i get home from work tonight. and believe me, if my wife had access to a wood shop, i'd be using a real riser instead of phone books by now :)

Thanks, Aleywwu. Sorry to pic whore in your thread, Madhorizons. Hope I've been helpful enough to make up for it. :D
madhorizons 05-12-09, 10:56 PM Nah...i don't care :P
Looks good!!!!
Now to convince the owner of the TV (aka...the fiancee) to let me go with the build of the stand.

Good luck with that. If my girl gets to it sooner than later, I'll try to remember to post you some photos to use as ammo. Aleywwu, you should do the same. I'd like to see pictures of your setup any way you slice it.:)
madhorizons 05-15-09, 08:51 AM I found a solution to raising it and it's in place...but gotta get stands for the speakers too.....its just this other stuff w/ level calibration greyed out is causing me all sorts of headache....gotta get that done before i think about stands.

I've thought and thought about it and I just can't figure a reason why they would be greyed out like that. Have you tried Onk's customer service? I know they're not the best by reputation, but this could be a real fault in the processing somewhere.:o
EDIT: I just saw in the 606 thread where you did just this. Good for you. Hopefully they'll resolve it.
madhorizons 05-15-09, 02:24 PM I've got a case open with them....they're supposed to get back to me...we'll see how that goes.
