View Full Version : Watching a video on a DTV
cyclernyc 05-12-09, 04:28 PM I'm unable to figure out how to add "channel 3" to my DTV since when it scans it isn't a channel but I need it to be able to watch a video or DVD.
When I use the "add channel" it doesn't let me add it.
If I switch to the analog setting on the TV and then select channel 3 using the remote that works but using the buttons on the TV it doesn't work.
It seems silly to need to switch when I ought to be able to add it permanently.
I've had the same issue seeing my local PBS stations but I'm hoping that after the change to DTV those will scan by themselves.
Thanks!
What TV is it? It seems you ought to be able to add that channel to the Analog memory. If your VCR has A/V outputs, you could use that, better image anyhow.
Alternatively you could turn on the VCR or whatever the source is and have it playing then have your TV do the channel scan and it should add channel 3 then since there will be content pumped out at that frequency.
cyclernyc 05-12-09, 06:08 PM It is a Samsung DTV. The channel is in the analog memory but when I switch to the DTV it isn't there (nor are any of the analog channels).
If I put on the VCR I just get "no signal" on the DTV.
"DTV" is "digital" only.
VCR's only output "analog" via the re-modulated RF output. And obviously, analog channels will not be available using the "DTV" input.
cyclernyc 05-12-09, 07:21 PM Right - so how do I get a channel that will allow me to watch my VCR/DVD player? Normally it is channel 3 but since it won't recognize it what do I use?
Or will there be another channel to use after the change?
raouliii 05-12-09, 10:30 PM Don't use a channel. You don't mention the specific model but I'll assume that your set is a relatively new DTV set with a number of input selections/connections such as composite and/or component video. An rf connection (coax to analog ch 3/4) is the worst quality connection you can use to input video from an external source.
I would suggest using composite video (yellow rca plug + red/white audio) to connect your vcr to your tv. Component video (red/green/blue rca plug + red/white audio) will provide the best video input for DVD.
cyclernyc 05-13-09, 11:11 AM Yes - it is a relatively new DTV. I'm not sure that I've explained it right. I am using composite video to connect but I need to select a channel on the TV to view to video. It has always been 3 on my previous TVs and on this one when I am on the analog selection of the TV.
How do you watch if you don't select a channel?
Which plugs is the composite video from your VCR or DVD connected to on the TV? Select that input with your remote (usually called Input, Source, Video, something like that).
If you are connected via composite connection you need to select that particular input on your TV. Such as Input 1, 2, or 3 or whatever number or name corresponds with that input. You wouldn't use a particular channel if you are connected via composite cable. You only need a channel if you are using some form of RF input.
cyclernyc 05-13-09, 07:23 PM I just did that to see - I went to input and chose VCR and it said "not available".
Possibly my cables aren't in the right place although I did it exactly the way that it showed in the user's guide.
As a test,Try connecting DVD into that input jack, or try a different cable.

To be explicit:
Yellow (out) from VCR. Red/white (out) from VCR.
Yellow (in) to TV. Red/white (in) to TV.
While a tape is playing... select the proper video input on the TV to view.
