View Full Version : Receiver setting for all speakers?
Ok, I have my surround set up and working on the full house. The house came with an upgrade speakers built in to two other rooms. On a 7.1 receiver, I have these plugged into the "B" or Surround "Back" ports. My question is, what setting do I put my receiver on to get full sound out equally on all speakers in the house? It's a Pioneer Elite receiver in case it matters.
Thanks in advance.
What does the manual say?

Are you using the "B" speaker outputs, the "surround back outputs", or both? Or are they one in the same? What is it you wish to accomplish as far as the "upgrade speakers built in to two other rooms" are concerned? How many pairs of speakers in other rooms are you trying to power? Are you running a 5.1 or a 7.1 setup in your main HT room? Have you properly configured the surround back amps for use in a Zone2 (or ZoneB as the case may be)?
Which Pioneer Elite receiver are you using?
What does the manual say?Exactly

Exactly
I have a Pioneer Elite VSX-03TXH, and I have 5 speakers in the TV room, 2 speakers in the hallway, 2 in the master. I have the hallway and master speakers plugged into the Surround "Back" or "B" speaker ports on the receiver. The hallway and master each have their own volume knob in the room I can turn up when I want. I have read the manual and played with it, but having problems getting the settings the way I want. I will only play hall and master speakers when playing music throughout the entire house, but having problems fixing or getting the setting that let's me play all speakers simultaneously. I do not have an amp hooked up, as I assumed this receiver, 110 watts per channel would be just enough to power the hall and master as well. Am I wrong? Can you help me out?
I wish there was a Pioneer chat room somewhere.
Thanks in advance, I appreciate the help.
sivadselim 05-16-09, 05:30 PM ............2 speakers in the hallway, 2 in the master. I have the hallway and master speakers plugged into the Surround "Back" or "B" speaker ports on the receiver. If you want to use these 4 speakers simultaneously, are you certain that they present the proper impedance to the 2 surround back amps?
The hallway and master each have their own volume knob in the room I can turn up when I want.Do you understand the implications that having the volume controllers in the chain may have upon the impedance that you are presenting to the surround back amps? (I don't.)
I have read the manual and played with it, but having problems getting the settings the way I want. I will only play hall and master speakers when playing music throughout the entire house, but having problems fixing or getting the setting that let's me play all speakers simultaneously.Impedance issues presented by having 4 speakers, as well as volume controllers, connected to 2 amps aside, have you properly configured the surround back amps for Zone2 operation as described on page 62, 63, and 64 in your manual?
One thing you should realize is that, as indicated in your manual, you can only use the Zone2 speakers with:
"iPod, XM or SIRIUS Radio, the built-in tuner and other analog audio sources"
This means that you cannot send any info from anything that is connected to the receiver with a digital connection to Zone2.
.................I assumed this receiver, 110 watts per channel would be just enough to power the hall and master as well.Well, provided you are not presenting any impedance issues to the surround back amps, it should be OK. But what is the recommended minimum impedance for those surround back amps? Without the volume controllers, 2 pair of 8ohm speakers will present a 4ohm load to those amps. If either pair of those speakers have an impedance lower than 8ohms, it will present an impedance that is even lower than 4ohms to those amps. The amps may not be spec'd to support that. I know they are not spec'd to support less than 4ohms and they may well only be spec'd down to 6ohms or even only 8ohms. But even if they aren't spec'd to support it, they could possibly still be OK with it.
But having the volume controls adds a wrinkle. They can possibly present some separate problems as far as the impedance is concerned. Or not. I really don't know as I have no idea what they are and how they are designed to operate.
Most likely the receiver will go into a protect mode and turn itself off should the surround back amps not like the impedance they are being presented with. However, it is also possible that it could cause some damage to those amps or to the receiver, especially if you are using all 7 channels at once.
Honestly, it may not be a great idea to use those extra 2 amps to power 2 extra pairs of speakers that have their own volume controllers.
Ok, I got everything hooked up, and seems to be running good. I still need to test it during a movie.
What if I get a speaker selector to shut off the hall and master when not in use, would that be a good idea?
I have HD Directv, and I could run this hdmi cable to the receiver then from their to the TV, but that would require the receiver being on everytime I watch TV. Is there any other way to connect the Directv so I can choose to run TV sound or Surround?
