Hi everyone.
My brother and I bought a house and I turned 2 rooms into one. So the room is rather long and narrow. It measures about 10'x21' with my 57" Hitachi CRT at one end and a couch about 8' away then the bed behind it on the wall opposite the TV. I currently have a Samsung 5.1 HTIB that I will be using until I get some money to piece together my own 5.1 system. I made a rough sketch with MS Paint to show what the room looks like. I am going to put the center channel on top of the TV, which is a little higher then ear level but is ok. The front R/L channels will be spread out the proper distance and will be wall mounted or on stands. The problem is the rear channels. To the right of the couch is the door and the left there are 2 windows. Is it ok to put these speakers up at ceiling level firing down towards the couch? Will that sound good? Is there a way to mount the rear channels on the same wall as my bed, about 10 feet behind the couch, and have it still sound good? I am going to mainly be watching/playing from the couch but will also be watching TV from my bed so I would like it to sound good from there too. Also I would like to go with 7.1 at some point, would that be possible in my room?? Any help with this setup would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!!

You can mount rear speakers high up near the ceiling usually 8ft up from the floor, so if need be they could be mounted above the door and windows. I prefer rear speakers mounted on the side walls rather than the back wall anyways. In fact, I have a similar long room situation (17 x 24) where there are doors all along the side walls and I mounted the rear speakers high up that way and it all sounds good whether from the bed or in the middle of the room. Reserve the back wall for your 7.1 surrounds in the near future. Since you have the Samsung system now, you can experiment with speaker placement like that and see how it goes.
