View Full Version : Color bleeding(?) with a PS3

I posted this in the PS3 Problems/Issues thread and PlayStation Area and was eventually referred here. So, here goes again. :)

I have an issue with my PS3 giving something I don't know the name for. The picture is "fine" in that it's usable, but contains an odd and painful color shift. Yellowish-white(and a little green) "shards" will stick out the right side of things, especially if they're bright and moving. Sometimes you can see blue shards of the same type sticking in from the right side of objects. I'm not sure what to do about it. I've messed around with the RGB range and super-white settings to no avail. Using 480(p?) instead of 1080 reduces the effect, but doesn't eliminate it.
As a side note, the most I've noticed it was in Metal Gear Solid 4 where there's a shot of Snake's face over a dreary sky background. Nasty green-yellowness comes sliding out of his face and begins to dance like an equalizer until the scene shifts.

Television is an Insignia NS27-HTV manufactured August 2006 with HDMI. This problem has only occurred with the PS3 hooked up to HDMI, although I haven't had anything else to test with.

"Sceenshot" with cell phone camera (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=142527&d=1242090869). Note that the only thing the camera did to the picture was split out the pixels and darked the corner. The odd greenish "shifting" around the car and crosswalk hatches is the issue.

I'm going to try a new cable once I can get my hands on one, but for now I'm checking to see if you whizzes have any ideas.

Not to break your chops... but it could just be the quality (lack of?) of the TV.

Yep. Insignia was a house brand for Best Buy made of lowest-bidder quality parts. The picture quality on their CTRs was terrible brand new.

We got the thing for free, so I'm not downed by that at all. I just want to stop bloodshotting my eyes with a few hours of gaming. The xBox 360 and PS2 do fine on component, so I was hopeful.

How does the PS3 look while using component?

I was going to say that I didn't have component cables for it until I remembered that all PlayStations have the same AV-out.

Hooked up the PS2's components to it and it looks beautiful, albeit in standard definition. Oh well, beats losing my eyesight.

That's some pretty serious convergence issues. If you say it only happens on HDMI, it's probably the set's HDMI interface to blame.

If you are in fact using component A/V cables (Red, Green, Blue, Red and White) for the PS2/PS3, you should be able to set the output(s) to 1080i.

It's an aftermarket Y/Pb/Pr cable for the PS2 that seems to be of high quality, but I don't get any high-def options in video setup. I choose "AVMultiOut" (their name for where the componesnt hooks in) and it skips the resolution selection page straight to "save settings."

Back to post #5... how does it work with the PS3? Can you still not select 1080i?

1) Your TV may have a fouled up HDMI calibration.
2) You may have a fouled up "aftermarket" component cable
3) If you can't get 1080i to work (assuming it's a 1080i capable game) with the PS2 and/or PS3 with component cables, you should post this on the PlayStation forum for help.

Properly setup... component cables should look fine using 1080i on that particular TV .... FWIW. ;)

2) I don't believe so. It was from a specialty store on ebay that came with a certificate showing test results on it. You never know, though.
3) PS2 is irrelevant. It works fine. The PS3 will not allow selection of anything but 480 while on "AVMultiOut," aka Component. However, the image distortion is gone and all of the colors are much neater.

AVMultiOut and Component are two different things on the PS3.

"AVMultiOut" is a special cable with that multi-out plug on both sides, only found in Japan. It has nothing to do with the connection type of the PS2/PS3 component cables. Here's a link of the cable. (http://www.ecat.sony.co.jp/avacc/cord/acc/index.cfm?PD=1552&KM=VMC-AVM250)

You need to set video of the PS3 to Component. Then you will get options for selecting 480p, 720p and/or 1080i.

AVMultiOut is what the port's labeled. Setting the Display to "Component" immediately skips to the "Apply Settings" page, skipping the option to change resolution.

AVMultiOut is what the port's labeled. That is right.
But, the PS3 is asking what type of connection is on the TV side, not the type of connection the PS3 side.

Setting the Display to "Component" immediately skips to the "Apply Settings" page, skipping the option to change resolution.
It should at least have asked if you want to use 480p, seen here in the online manual under 6 (http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/videooutput.html).
Is the firmware up-to-date? The latest one is 2.76

I know it should, but it doesn't. I have no idea why.

Yes, I keep the firmware up to date on my PS3 and PSP religiously. :p
