Hi -

I have a 36" Mitsibushi I bought in the summer of 1997. After it not being used November 08 through late April 09 I turned it on (it did not have power to it during this time). The audio is fine but the picture is rolling up and down and side to side. I tried two different cable inputs plus the Xbox on one input shows the same on all inputs.

Is this worth fixing? It would require a house call. I really hate to toss it as it is a very good TV when it was working and I've owned other Mits TVs before that have lasted longer.

I suspect a bad capacitor somewhere. Did it improve if you let it warm up a while? Any hum in the sound?

Depends on what awhile means? I left it on for 10-20 minutes and it didn't change. I don't believe there was a hum but I'd have to listen more closely to verify. If it has a hum does that change the problem?

Can you poat a picture of the TV problem? I'm reminded of a 27" Mitsu that had a PIP module problem.

20 minutes should have been enough. It should be an easy fix, since you still have some sort of picture nothing major has failed. Open it up and check for any bulged capacitors, replace as needed. Also try and get a service manual, will make things a lot easier.

Sounds exactly like the PIP board. On some models it can be bypassed by jumpering out 2 pins on on the PIP board connector. It's been a long time since I've seen one of these and can't remember which pins the were. I wouldn't put more than $200 in it, you can find CRT based HD sets on Craigslist for $300 or so.

Audio seems fine. Picture seemed to improve after a couple hours but still not well enough to want to watch it that way all the time. How would I know how much it is going to cost to repair? Someone will need to make a house call so won't that be $80-$100 for them to just walk in the door? Here are two pictures attached.

Looks like the classic PIP module problem. Call around and see what shops charge to repair the PIP board before getting a tech out.

Is it something that needs to be replaced or is it something I could just remove? I don't have a need for PIP.

It can be removed but you will need to jumper the video in/out pins on the connector. It's been so long since I've done one I don't remember which pins they are.

I did a google search and found this? Does it sound right? Would I find the PIP module labeled and easily? Where would I get the 22mf NP 50v caps? and will they be easy to connect? Do I need to be soddering?

Solution is.....remove PIP module ( defective)
On VP connector bottom of chassis...use 22mf NP 50v caps
to connect pin 5 to 11 and pin 7 to 9.....that will pass video
to full screen, but PIP box will not work.......this repair is called
a PIP by-pass...........a very common Mits. repair.............

That sure is PIP, that is what the 27" set did when I removed the bypass cap that was in it. See if you can find a schematic on the Web (need model number), to verify that tip. If you fix it that way, PIP will show a black box. You can get a parts kit to replace the bad capacitors in the PIP module, not easy but works. Try running it a bit more, capacitors may "heal" enough to use it a while.
