I have an apple tv and a dvd player hooked into an onkio reciever which outputs to a phillips tv. Each component is connected through hdmi. Everything works great except for at startup. If I do not have my tv turned on, the receiver does not output any sound. Once the tv is turned on and through its initial startup the audio in the reciever starts to work fine and I can shut off the tv and the audio remains on. Is there any way that I do not have to turn on my tv to hear audio through either the apple tv or dvd player? Is this a reciever issue or just a general "cannot do it" part of the hdmi interface.

I have similar issue with my setup. Since the DVD and CD player are one and the same, the reciever does not know which one you are playing. So you have go to the TV to select your input - which would be dvd, then it would allow the sound to go through. It is annoying, but it only takes a minute or so to turn on the tv and select your input.

Do you have your HDMI audio output set to "on" in the receiver's set-up menu?

It's easy to tell, do your TV's speakers output audio from an HDMI source connected to your receiver?

I have a similar issue with my Onkyo 605. DVD via HDMI to AVR, AVR via HDMI to TV. If I put a movie in before I turn on the TV I get sound, if I put a CD in with the TV off it plays intermittently - The display on the AVR reads DVD Audio, sound plays for about 4 seconds, display goes blank and I lose sound - 4 seconds later it's back. HDMI audio is off on the AVR.

Turning on the TV solves the problem :confused:
