Hi I am leaving for grad school and need a new HDTV. At my home we currently use a Sanyo-Z3 projector with an xbox 360 that upconverts dvd's. I do not use a blue-ray player with it. The image looks good but the blacks are not where I would like them to be. This may be in part that I do not use blue-ray.

So I will be buying a PS3 as a blue-ray player (this should do the job right? or would a $400 standalone be much better?). Anyways this leaves me with $1300 absolute max for the projector.

I have been looking at the Sharp DT-510, Panasonic PT-AX200U, and the Infocus X10. Are there any others I should be considering. I most importantly want a fantastic looking image when used with blue-rays. I will also be using dvd's though. The room it will be in has 1 window with blinds I can get double blinds if I need them. I will take picture quality>brightness if there is a significant difference.

I am also considering an extremely well reviewed Panasonic S1 42" plasma that is described as having superb blacks. ($900)

I would prefer to have the projector sitting on a cabinet in the back of the room but can ceiling mount if I must. Picture quality is again my #1. The room is 11x15 so the projector will be roughly 10.5 feet away from the wall. I am planning on using no screen, maybe paint.

Are there any projectors in my price range that will give me image quality close to the plasma? Thanks!

ps. Overall I am looking for the best looking picture possible.

If you can find it on sale, there is also the Epson 6100.

Epson sent me an email today, Memorial Day Weekend Sale 10% off, and I saw a refurbished Epson HC1080 for $1500, so would be $1350, close to your budget.........

When it is on sale at Best Buy, I believe they had it for about $1,600-$1,700. If you can wait a little while, you might catch a sale. I also have seen some people talk down the store managers, since there is such a high profit margin on them and the economy is so bad. You could also get a refurb BenQ W5000, but they don't have the placement flexibility the Epson has. The Sanyo 1080p projector is about $1,499, you might be able to find it cheaper:

"I've seen the Epson 1080 new for less than $1,000. "

Where'd you see that, best i saw new was around $1600 with $300 Rebate and Free bulb......but that is no longer available as well

Deals on the Epson 6100 are no longer around, I've searched and found nothing, as a friend just purchased one two weeks ago.....

I have another friend looking for a budget 1080p projector, so any deals out there, I'm interested.....

I think I am going to go with this Epson $1350 over the sharp dt-510 $800ish. The picture seems to be outstanding. Does this sound like a good move?

Although I think the Panny S1 is a great plasma, it's going for about $900 new in the box right now. $5-600 is a fair price to pay.

But a projector is a better viewing experience.
