View Full Version : Need help with Magnavox 2160A (clock problem)

Up until recently I HAVE been happy with the Magnavox 2160A that I got a couple of weeks ago (despite the problems others have talked about here, I haven't had those troubles, YET anyway).

However I have encountered a problem that DOES bother me that I can't figure out, and I sure could use some insight from someone on what's going on, here.

Twice in the past few weeks, for no reason I can explain, the clock on my 2160 has reset itself, not by a few minutes but a few HOURS. Thankfully both times I've seen it and re-set it to the proper time before programming it to record something. (I just noticed it for the second time this afternoon.) If this is going to keep happening, I have to seriously wonder if I should return it and get a replacement. (It's been way sooner than the 90 day return window for Walmart.) After all, what good is a recorder if the clock is messing up?

FYI I've got this hooked up straight to the coax cable from cable company, then to the cable box, then to the HDTV. Would that set-up have anything to do with the clock re-setting somehow (anything to do with the cable company or something weird like that)?

Any ideas what's going on with this machine? Is it something I can fix somehow -- or should I just return it and take my chances on a new one? BTW I am NOT very technically savvy, so please explain in layman's terms. :) Thanks in advance!

Set the Auto Clock on MANUAL for a channel that provides a good, stable time signal, which you can confirm using "The 11:57 Procedure" described here. (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=12298425#Set2)

Thanks, wajo, I'll try that. (I'd read about it before I got my 2160 but I forgot to set it up that way when I got it.)

UPDATE: Well I tried the 11:57 solution and apparently it couldn't get a good time signal, because the clock didn't change, so I'm leaving it on MANUAL and I re-set it myself.

Of note, it WAS set on AUTO, and to channel 60 -- Animal Planet! No wonder it was messing up...poor thing was confused.

Also of note, it had reset itself again today/last night, some 3 hours ahead (before I'd run the above test and then re-set the clock).

Hopefully this will now fix things! Thanks again for the advice.

I have a couple of VCRs that were doing that. I turned off daylight savings time and also set the clock to Manual. That worked for me so I hope it does for you. They were resetting their times for no reason until I put the control of time setting to Manual. Good luck and I hope it works for you.

Thanks microladyusa...so far, so good. Since I re-set the clock the other day and set to Manual, not Auto, it's been OK. Knock on wood that it's hopefully fixed once and for all!
