reconlabtech 05-22-09, 05:56 PM Panasonic AX200u LCD
Optoma HD65 DLP
Lamp replacement is about $250 to $350
dysfunction26 05-22-09, 06:24 PM I have a PS3 and Wii and game on my Epson 6500UB. If you are looking for something cheaper, I would recommend the Panasonic AX200, or even the Infocus X10. DLP's are typically better for gaming, but my LCD works just fine.
Pure-Evil 05-22-09, 07:50 PM if you are going strictly for bulb life, the mitsubishi hc4900 and 5500 get almost 5000 hours on econo mode. that woudl be the longest i know of. as for "best for gaming" they all should do a fine job. i use my benq w9000 all the time with my ps3...and it rocks
jarrod1937 05-22-09, 08:12 PM As evil hints at, all projectors are generally good "gaming projectors" (aside from the obvious budget business class projectors). The "gaming modes" and other such gaming features are really just gimmicks to sell.
The "game" mode on the ax200u is a complete gimmick. It is just a preset mode the bumps the black and white level way up. I have not had one projector that has had problems playing guitar hero or rockband, so processing time is not a problem at all. Any 16:9 home theater projector will rock for any type of gaming. When it comes to gaming not many requirements are needed. I would say 720P, decent brightness, contrast, and HDMI are the real players needed for a gaming projector. Black level and other things are not really noticed when playing games. I just got an HC720 and its mind blowing for the money. Check it out from one of our forum sponsers!

There is zero guarantee you will get that estimated lamp life.
PJ lamp life is subject to many variables and while it's possible for almost any PJ to get 5,000 hours from a lamp, telling someone to buy something based on projected/estimated possible life is not very helpful.

Actually the Game Mode does two things, you just mentioned one. While you are right that many PJs can handle gaming, let's not put out bad opinion on any particular model when trying to help others who may wish to benefit from a provided feature.
The AX200u does two things in game mode:
■Improved signal processing for optimized frame response, enabling gamers to enjoy lag-free play.
■Expanded detail reproduction, which reveals gradation in saturated areas otherwise lost in darkness.
Some people who do not want to tweak their PJ manually can benefit from using this mode to enhance their game playing.

well, i'm not pulling that number outta my ass...it's directly from mitsubishi. so i'd say it's probably pretty close. anyways, it was just a suggestion.

No, I understand that. ALl the PJ makers give you an estimated life and the newer DC lamps do last longer. Just don't buy one counting on 5,000 hours because you can't afford a new lamp. :D
dysfunction26 05-23-09, 12:53 AM Buy a Mack bulb warranty for the projector too, that $100 now WILL save you a few hundred later.

Which can be turned off in the user menu in other modes. Even then, just because there is any processing does not mean a human can/will notice it. Its just important to avoid the obvious ones like scaling, deinterlacing, frame interpolation.

Well, first off i consider this an inaccurate image. I use a colorimeter to calibrate my projector to produce an accurate image for movies. I do the same for gaming. Generally an accurate image will allow you to see all the details you need, and look normal in the process. But even ignoring that, you can simply up your brightness/lower your gamma and lower your saturation to achieve the same affect.
Some people who do not want to tweak their PJ manually can benefit from using this mode to enhance their game playing.
Quite true... but can't you simply select a mode, and make these settings your "gaming" settings? This in the process will allow you to vastly widen your projector search while getting the same effect. Though i guess you're right that they may benefit those who don't want to change these settings manually... but considering that would only take 10 minutes i am not sure how much that is worth.
When I had the ax200u, game mode and dynamic mode were not watchable at all. It just looked terrible. Colors were all out of wack and once you calibrated it to look correct the lumen output was similar to the other lower lumen modes, so its not worth it in the end. Look for some projectors that you like and fit your budget and them come back here and post them. There are a lot of knowledgeable members on here that can help you pick the best one.
