im trying to snag a sub for my setup, in the store, the martin login abyss sounded really good, while the supercube II sounded muddy and not as clean. Evidently the abyss is a sealed, front firing sub, is thta correct? The guy at the store said thats what i want for games but im not sure. i do know it sounded clean

problem is the price is quite high on it, lowest i can find is about 900 bucks. ( i was looking at spending around 700) Most posts about the abyss say its a decent sub but way over priced

svs, HSU and elemental design are all recommended a lot in the threads im seeing. The question is, are they sealed or ported? i cant tell on the specs. hell i dont even know what most of that stuff means.

So first off, can anyone explain what the difference between sealed and ported really is? what it means? i see a lot of threads talking about sealed or ported but theyre all by people who understand what it means, im looking to start from Sealed vs ported 101 =P

and 2nd for gaming whats generally better? sealed or ported? or is there another factor thats more important? I dont give a crap about music or tv, this will be ONLY for HT, 90% games 10% movies, 0% tv/music. Like said the abyss souned a lot better than the supercube so im guessing i want a sealed sub

oh ya, my front speakers have built in subs already btw, this is going to be the dedicated sub though since i didn't think the sound had enough oomph without one.

room is 18X13, bedroom so its sealed except for a door
reciever: pioneer elite sc-05
front: def tech bp7004
center: clr2002
rears: bp2x

I tried calling HSU/SVS, and ED, but they were all closed for the day, eastcoast and midwest times i guess

i'd say go with a good internet direct brand ported sub. ED is good, Epik is good. no reason a ported sub can't sound good, especially for gaming and a little HT.

i have an Epik Sentinel on order to replace a DIY sealed sub that i was never happy with.

the main difference is that a ported sub will play deeper lows and be more efficient. sealed is said to be more accurate, but a good ported sub can sound 95% as accurate if done right.

Wasn’t there a thread like this last week?

I’d buy a ported one and stuff the port up and see if you prefer it with it stuffed or un-stuffed?

Personally its preferable thing thou I have no dispute over ported subs at cinemas so I use ported.
