View Full Version : Will the ED A2-300 or BIC H-100 be too much sub?

I was about to the pull the trigger on either the ED A2-300 or BIC H-100 after deciding I wanted the lowest frequency response in my price range (I'm not sure why I'm so fixated on this- but it will be mostly used for HT and gaming)

I am in a temporary apartment and will be moving back to a living room/dining room space of around 16' x 20'. I just eyeballed these sub dimensions and I'm a little shocked at how big they are - which will be monolithic in the space I'm in now. I was leaning towards a 12" driver but is this more than I really need? It is my first powered sub and I'll be taking my time upgrading all my other speakers (which is currently the lowest end all-in-one 5.1 Sony system ever made!)
By the way what started this chain reaction was getting a new receiver - the onkyo tx-sr606 - which required a powered subwoofer....

My question is, should I get a smaller stand-in subwoofer like the A2-250 or SVS PB-10 and upgrade to a larger driver later? Can you really tell the difference between 18 and 24 Hz anyway??? thanks for any advice, nycto15

I'm in a similar situation, apartment with 12x15 room, and I went with the A2-300 just because I can always turn it down and don't have to uprade later. I just want better, tighter bass, and I expect it from this purchase.

I'd sure love to hear your thoughts when you set up the a2-300 in your apartment!
I'm afraid of it being a monstrosity and just plain overkill for my situation. But then again, everything I read online seems to reflect nothing but 'upgrade-itis' when it comes to one's HT setup so perhaps it is better to get a more advanced model now so I don't have regrets later.
What made you decide to go with ED over the other options?

Overkill is a non issue when calibrated and properly setup, that's what the volume control is for. Underkill on the other hand can be a huge issue which will most likely involve another dive into the wallet.

Agreed!

You can always turn it down and there's no such thing as subwoofer overkill.

I went from a Yamaha YST-SW005 to an eD A2-300 and the difference was phenomenal.

Thanks for the input! I guess I don't know what to expect since it is my first real HT - It sounds like it is worth the build wait for the A2-300 from what I'm hearing....

There's no such thing as too much sub. Buy one that meets your budget as well as its abilities to fill your room with enough bass for movies. Yes, depending on the sub, you will able to tell the difference between a sub that extends beyond 20 Hz and one that extends roughly to 23 Hz, especially in a smaller room.

tks skool - I feel better about being picky over the frequency response if not the wattage.
So I finally took the plunge and just ordered the ED A2-300 - which is exactly my price point for my first powered sub! Now its just the other 7 speakers I have to figure out : P

Since you don't have the front speakers already setup, why didn't you gave the Package Builder at eD a try. It will give you 15% total discount combine with your A2-300. Their speakers are pretty good for HT usage without the harshness like other speakers. If you have some additional money, I would try this combination.

Use A6-6T6 for fronts/center and A3-5TC as rears along with the A2-300 as your sub. This should runs you below $1k.

I currently have the bic h-100 and can assure you it isn't too much sub. Compared with some other components it is actually a pretty small sub. Mine is in my living room which is roughly 13x20 and that opens up to my kitchen. I replaced the sub from an Onkyo HTIB with this and it was a big step up. For the price it is a great sub. Mind you I am about to replace it, I am building a 26" cube (thats starting to get big lol) for an 18" Maelstrom-X that I will have tomorrow.

Wow - an 18" driver for that space. I am a wuss! ;) & I was having trouble imagining my 18" box height! Now that I'm starting to look at speaker options I'm realizing the sub is the least of my worries. At this point I wouldn't rule out towers......yikes

I'm still in saving mode for the rest of my 5 (7?) speakers but I'd love to hear feedback on ED's A6-6T6's and the A3-5TC's that Skool mentioned. I suppose I should sidle over to the speaker forum and start investigating...

How do you like your A2-300?
