So a little while back, I asked the forum for help choosing an entry level sub to fill out my system. After much input, for my birthday, I asked for a Acoustic Audio HD-SUB12.

Today I unwrapped my presents. And got an Ipod instead. :)

(Don't get me wrong, I wanted the ipod!)

So it looks like I will be buying the sub for myself.

I'm trying to decide between the following:

Acoustic Audio HD-SUB12
Acoustic Audio HD-SUB15
Premier Acoustic PA-120

And I'm leaning towards the AA subs.

What are the benefits of a 15 over a 12? I know more volume with the larger cone area and higher wattage, but what else? What about freq response?

If I were willing to spend a little bit more, what would you guys recommend? $350 tops.

Ok, everyone is saying spend a little more. I didn't think the HD 12's or 15's were that bad...

It looks like I could get a HSU STF-2. but that brings me down to a 10 inch driver and only 200 watts. Will it really out perform the Acoustic Audio HD-SUB15?

How big is your room? Bigger driver doesn't mean better. It's a combination of driver, its efficiency, amp, and cabinet design that make one sub better than the other. Although I never heard of the HD-Sub15, but the STF-2 should be a great performer in a medium size room. It has quality bass that probably rival many in the commercial arena for higher prices.

I haven't heard the Acoustic Audio subs and only found 1 consumer review on the 15. He said it was very light weight with a very small/weak motor that distorted horribly when played at higher volumes.

I am always suspicious of something that is priced 1/3 of the MSRP. I'm also leery of a company that doesn't have a web site.

well I have a huge theater area...
I have dual PA-120's and im extremely happy with it.... can getloud with music or movies

sounds great on both musIc and movies....

u can gain a lil....more by spending more.... butto me the amount spent wasnt worth it,, especially since I dont have a dedicated theater room and I dont have an endless supply of money...

I say if ur on a budget,,, and u want the best ur money will give you... try dual PA-120's..... and no I have not turned my system to the max to test for distortion,,,, but as loud as I have played it,,, I have yet to have them distort

I have a STF-2 and I love it, even though I have since stepped up to a VTF3 mk3. It is great for music, it makes other subs sound sloppy and boomy in comparison, even much more expensive ones. I am sure it would be good for movies as well, especially ones with good music soundtracks. However, if all you are buying a sub for is to make explosions and shooting sound louder, there may be better options in your price range (not many, but probably a few). For anything else though, I don't think you could do better.

The STF-2 is a step up for not much more money I'd go with it if that's your max.

'Spend a little more on... ' is winning the poll.
