I would have to say that the Athena AS-P400 and AS-P4000 are among the best pound for pound/dollar for dollar subs ever made. I have now moved the Athena to my game room for videogame duty, but it still hits as deep as a ROCK SOLID 20hz with room gain. The funny thing is that there's SO little content below 20hz out there that it's even hard to notice a difference between the Athena and the SVS PB12–NSD on most Blurays. The only scene on a bluray so far that I noticed deeper bass than the Athena could have handled was the Fire Truck in Quarintine which seemed to have sound in the 16-19hz range which the SVS reproduced accurately. I would say that the Athena AS-P400 and AS-P4000 are akin to the Nissan GTR. Sure it's not as good as an ENZO Ferrari or Koenigsegg CCXR, but it's no slouch and it costs $70k and not a million or 2 million like some Mid Engine Euorpean Exotics, but pound for pound, dollar for dollar, the GTR is probably the best production sports car in the world.

After owning both I'd have to agree with you. If they didn't have the amp issue I'd still have mine and be adding multiples.

I think he is meaning in some ways it's more impressive. There is no doubt the PB12 will dig deeper and have more output and the Athena 10" models were not $300 subs. $300 might have been MSRP when available were easily found new for $149 shipped.

The SVS is a little bit better, but the SVS cost me $628, and the Athena Cost me $165 after shipping. I'd say that the Athena is worth about $450 just based on performance if the SVS is worth $628.

THE Athena goes down to 23hz @-3db, and the SVS goes down to 18hz @-3db according to the manufacturers. I'd say the gap is actually smaller than that. I'd say that with room gain, the SVS goes down to about -3db@16hz, and the Athena about -3@ 19 hz.

Have you measured these, or are you just pulling numbers from the air based on listening and gut?

Sounds like the Athena is a decent budget sub though...

Thanks for pointing out that the Athenas have amp issues. That takes them out of contention for most buyers.

Plus the fact that Athena is no longer a company in itself and they aren't available anymore takes them out even further.
