Page 40 of the manual discuses the SEGMENT editing function.
I wish to edit out commercial messages during a movie. It appears SEGMENT will do this but when I use the OK button to mark the in/out segments I don't see anything marked. Has anyone had success using the SEGMENT function and if so, provide more detail as to how this works?

This confused me at first too. Mark In and you get no indication until you FFWD a little and mark Out. Then you get a bar showing the length of the edit.
I'm still not following. When in the SEGMENT menu it says to push the SELECT button to mark in/out. Other than the OK button, I don't see a SELECT button. When I push the OK button to mark in, fast forward then push the OK button to mark out, the timing bar doesn't change (other than to show some time has elapsed).

The color of the time bar changes at the edit points but the remotes for those things have a horrible emitter diode so half the time the edit point doesn't take and you have to hit it again/just right to get it to take.
Most of us that used to run those bought the high output infra red remote LED from Radio Shack and replaced the one installed in the remote, then it works very nicely.
Ah, okay I see the color change, previously missed it due to very little contrast.
Now, how do I save the editing? I see if I STOP and then reactivate the SEGMENT menu the spots on the timer bar are still there. Does this mean the HDD programming is unaffected but a transfer to the DVD will be edited?

Yes the original recording on the drive is unaffected, it just skips the darker parts and isn't exactly frame accurate so you might have to play with your edit points till you get it close enough to make you happy. It does the skipping when you burn to disk.
Thanks guys for your helpful responses. I was able to successfully edit the commercials out of a TV movie. While after 2 years, my drm-2001g is a little clunky, perseverance paid off! Out of the blue the unit decided to throw in a 1-2 second delay following a key punch and a 2-3 minute delay for the DVD tray to open, sigh.
