First off, Hello Everyone...
I'm a noob here and this is my 1st post so be gentle, lol. I've been lurking a while and am very impressed with the discussions and knowledge here! I've been "playing" in the Car Audio Sound Quality arena for years however, and I do have (by my standards) an excellent 2.1 Channel Home Setup. I'm a musician and come from a family of musicians, though I'm a professional photographer ATM, lol!
Anyhow, the Parents have an extra room at the vacation house that they want to dedicate to a Home Theater setup. They already have a Sammy LN46B750 Flat Screen but want to work on the HT Audio setup.
The Room is approx. 14'Wx18'Lx8'H and is adjacent to a small 10'x11' home office (3.5'-wide open doorway) and a 8'-long hallway at the opposite end leads to the rest of the house.
The Flat Screen is Wall-Mounted near a Corner of the room on the 14'-wide section of wall. The system will be used for (hopefully) excellent quality music listening as well as HT.
I have built at least 30 MDF and/or Custom Fiberglass sub enclosures for car audio so I am handy with the MDF, etc. ;)
In the room directly behind the wall where the Flat Screen is mounted, there is a Built-in floor-to-ceiling Cabinet (in the Corner of the room.) The area available in base of this cabinet is approx. 30"W x 30"D x 15"H. I was thinking of building a custom enclosure that would fit in the bottom of this cabinet and have the Subwoofer cone and/or ports fire into the HT Room via a cutout in the wall.
The opening could or would be within 4"-16" from the corner of the room near the floor (directly under the Flat Screen). I would cover the opening with a custom grill so it would look like the typical "In-Wall" speaker Grill, and this might end up behind a free-standing shelf system or cabinet/hutch.
I happen to have a few extra Car Audio Subs laying around so why not make use of them if they might work? If not, I can always go with a Shiva or whatever else may be suggested that will work in up to the ~5.8cu.ft. enclosure volume available. If I need to purchase a different sub to accomplish my goal, I'd like to keep it under $350 or so. I have amps and processing available (see below), or I could buy an inexpensive plate amp, etc.
My first choice would be my Boston Acoustics SPG-555 "Racetrack" sub as the Grill could remain smaller. I have both the 4-ohm & 2-ohm voice coils available (the coils are user-interchangable.) I'm not very proficient at modeling up subs, but here are the specs for any of you who are interested.

I'm not looking to shake the house apart and would be more interested in accurate music reproduction (those occasional low organ notes, canon blasts, and explosions are addictive however!) I'd like it to dig as deep as possible, but realize I don't have a lot of cone area working for me for SPL...it does have pretty decent xmax though.
I have a few other subs available as well, though they're a bit old school with less xmax and less power handling...

All of these have Dual 4-Ohm Voice Coils, so it's gonna be either 2-ohm or 8-ohm if used individually.
Power could be from a Crown Xti-2000 or Behringer EP2500. I've also got an older nOrh Dual Mono "Multiamp" laying around somewhere (it has a built-in, adjustable Freq. X/O @ 12dB/octave IIRC). For processing/crossover I also have a Behringer Ultra-Curve Pro DSP8024 and Ultra-Drive Pro DCX2496.
No idea what I'm gonna use for LRC/Surrounds yet!
I do like Live Performance sound levels, excellent Sound Quality (I hate to say audiophile) and a bit of "extra" bass occasionally, but again, this is for my parents HT room, lol...the kids and grandkids will make good use of it when visiting!
Should I try one of my subs or just buy and build a proven DIY HT sub?
If you've read this far, must be really bored or, you ROCK! ;) I'm open to the expertise that abounds here!
TIA!!!
