my first post:
GX355

I copied over from VHS tapes to DVD using DYNEX DVD+R disks.
(after reading, I know now to buy better media)
So far only the GX355 recognizes these burned disks. I tried a 2nd DVD player and also Winblow$ and Linux PCs. All 3 show empty media.
Is there a setting that I missed?

Second question: While looking for maybe an answer to the above, I changed from DVD3 to DVD1 in the Setup Menu and cannot get back to any menus via remote. How the heck do I get back to DVD3??

Thanks

To reset the remote control system, you first have to change the remote itself so it sends DVD1 signals to the recorder, giving you access to the setup menu again: hold down the "enter" key with one finger then hold down the "1" key with another finger, keeping both pressed for five full seconds, then release That should make the remote sync up with your recorder in Mode 1. You should now be able to control the recorder. Go back to the setup menu, and change the remote code back to the default "3". Then, you have to change the remote itself back to three again: hold down the "enter" key with one finger then hold down the "3" key with another finger, keeping both pressed for five full seconds, then release That should make the remote sync up with your recorder in Mode 3, the original factory setting.

As for the disc compatibility issues, do you recall if you finalized these discs? Most dvd players and computer drives will not recognize a disc burned by a dvd recorder until it is finalized (cleaned up with a proper table of contents). DVD-R and DVD+R should be finalized, there should be a Disc Setup menu or Finalize Disc function somewhere in the setup screens. DVD-RW usually (but not always) needs to be finalized and DVD+RW does not need finalizing. This is confusing, but each type of disc interacts differently with recorders and playback drives so its necessary to learn about.

If you're sure you DID finalize these DVDs, then either the Dynex media or your recorder is defective. Try a brand of disc made by a different factory, like Sony or Verbatim. (Dynex, TDK and most other brands come from the same factory, but Sony is independent, and Verbatim uses different supervision). Avoid Memorex or Maxell, these have issues similar to Dynex. If switching to Sony or Verbatim media does not solve your problem, and you're quite sure you are finalizing, the recorder is probably not working right and needs service.

Glad it worked out!:) After you try the finalizing, please report back and let us know if that totally fixed your playback problem: it could help other people with similar questions to narrow down their solutions.
