I have a chance to buy velodyne va -1012 x11 dirt cheap. Any info or thoughts. I want to upgrade my current sub wich came with my boston mcs 130 setup. I like the speakers but sub is weak. Was thinking of tsc 250 or svs or hsu but id have to wait a little to get those i can jump on this right now. But iam a little skeptical. I know this is an older sub in perfect condition. But cant find any good reviews .Any help or thoughts appreciated.Oh iam pushing these with pio 1018. thanks

I own one of these VA-1012. I've had it since 1986 and it has been used at least weekly or more and it still is going strong. It will not fill a room with alot of bass nor does it have any type of controls on the sub. No crossover or anything else. It only has a volume control and a on-off button.

The best place for this sub is nearfield due to its bass reflex design. I had mine between my two recliners and it would shake the seats nicely whenever there was bass. So I have used my VA-1012 to argument the bass not as the sole sub woofer in a HT system. You will see in my signature I have 3 other subs in my very large family room. The one picture shows a HSU ULS-15 between the seats but I have since moved the VA-1012 back to that location because I still love the way it shakes the seats.

Thanks for responding. I took a look at your pictures and i couldn't see the velodyne to good .But from what i did see of it in the corner and and from what u said you have had it since 86 iam wondering if there a different model. From searches i did earlier i was assuming that velodyne va-1012 X11 was about from 95 .Also i just looked at pictures of the one i might buy and it does have two knobs on back cant make them out exactly.I could call the guy to get more info.

Your right, mine is the older model but I just don't want you to expect alot from the newer model either. It is a simple sub. However mine has lasted more than 20 years which says alot about the reliability of this particular model of Velodyne.

You don't think there was an improvent from your model(I dont have specs to compare)? Also you say the sub wouldn't fill a room with bass, can you be more specific.

Well if it is a small sealed room, no large openings, such as a bedroom size room (9 x 9) it will work. In a large open room it will work better nearfield like I have it set up in my configuration. Again I would use that Velo as an argumentation to other subs, not as the only sub.

So you could add this sub using a Y adaptor out of your pioneer and then run both subs. The Velodyne nearfield and the other wherever it sounds best.

Or you can do the wise financial move and just save up your money to buy a brand new, more up to date, sub. While saving your money (I know) is very hard to do you can at least continue to read and research here at AVS to find a future prospect.
