Last night I made a trip to Best Buy to take a look at the Panasonic 42" G10. I am planning to buy this Plasma in the next couple weeks and wanted to see it in person. I have done a plethora of research and decided that this is the machine I want, but wanted to look at it in real life to seal the deal. Anyway, when I got there I couldn't see any on display so I asked the salesman if they had any in stock. He said that they just sold that last display model and would just if he had any in stock elsewhere. After about ten minutes he returned and told me that Panasonic has discontinued the 42" G10 and I would be able to get it anywhere. I was shocked to say the least. Why would Panasonic stop production of such a new model, I asked. He replied that manufacturers do this all the time. I told him that Amazon still has some and he said that they probably don't have any in stock.

This really set me back because I was not expecting a conversation like this to occur. Can anybody help me out to verify this or is Best Buy full of crap? I've really had my heart set on this Plasma. Thanks.

Did you forget to mention the part where they said, "Buy a Samsung LCD instead"? :p

Funny thing, Salesman's quote exactly, "Have you looked at Samsung, I have one and love it".

Needles to say, I walked out...

Tell it to Panny, if they are paying for display space at BB they may get cranky with them.

Most BB are transitioning from the S1 and G10 42" Models to just the U1... Dont know why but is most stores thats the way its going... But no, the G10 will still be carried by BB in a few select stores...
And just because he told you about a samsung doesnt mean anything... Thats what he's trained for... To give you an alternative to try and earn your business...

Maybe they realized they had too many models at 42" this year and the G10 wasnt selling.

Not basing that on anything but they do have a bunch of 42" models this year, maybe the high end one isnt selling good at the lower size.

Best Buy does not carry the 42" G10 and never has - they only carry the 50" version. They couldn't possibly have "just sold it" because they don't carry it. They routinely tell customers that XXX model is discontinued when in reality they're either out of stock or they don't carry that model and try to steer you towards another brand - usually Samsung.

The G10 was only released a few months ago and is not discontinued. Panasonic only discontinues a model at or near the end of it's production cycle right before the next year's model debuts. Best Buy salesmen and managers lie like this a lot - you can't believe much of what these crooks say. It's available from dozens of online vendors including Amazon.

i've been at every local best buy in my area (greensboro/raleigh, NC) and none of them have anything but the 50" G10. and you even have to look for it; it's usually at some end-cap display and not with all the other displays.

it's a shame too b/c i've become tired of waiting and would probably break my self-imposed large-purchase embargo with BB.

Best Buy needs to fire a lot of employees and teach them the right way to do business. :D

Best Buy needs to fire a lot of employees and teach them the right way to do business. :DBut those employees are told what to say to the customers - it's always the same and these kids can't make this crap up. Their instructions come from higher management. I was there killing time a few days ago and was chatting with some folks in the TV area and they said that another BB was pushing the Samsung LCDs on them. I told them this one is no different, and the salesmen usually recommend the Samsungs and also will try to scare you into buying their extended warranty and also try to sell you their "calibration" service and how it reduces energy consumption by 30%. Almost on cue, a seemingly knowledgeable blue shirt sauntered over and started talking to us about how the Samsung LCDs and LED TVs are surpassing the Pioneer and Panasonic plasmas in picture quality, spouted some technobabble gibberish, then went on to recommend the calibration because "none of these TVs look good out of the box, and the calibration also reduces energy consumption from 1/3rd to 50%". The couple looked at me as if i was psychic :D I just shook my head and eased over to the AVR section since there was nothing to be gained by correcting him :)

This is exactly how Best Buy does business - they're a really sleazy and dishonest company and it starts at the highest management. Once in a while you'll get a BB or Magnolia salesman that's an enthusiast and is honest and knowledgeable and they're fun to talk to. ANd probably a new employee. But the majority of them that i've encountered or overheard are scammy and pretty underhanded.

I am glad I haven't purchased a set there and won't. Just window shopping for me. :D

I don't know why anyone would actually buy a television from Best Buy
they never carried the 42" G10 in the first place so the saleskid is a liar
when I go there to compare televisions the saleskids try to steer me towards Samsung LCD sets when I tell them that LCD has too many motion problems, inferior blacks, terrible off axis viewing and screen uniformity problems they just walk away knowing that I won't be buying the BS that they are selling

Only B&M in the area besides sears. Decent protection plan. Decent prices. Deals with returns well. I never really saw the big hate for best buy.

If your getting advice from some one getting payed 10 bucks an hour and shouldn't really be expected to know everything than thats another problem.

I learned years ago not to trust BB from my pc buying and upgrading. I always knew more about what I was buying then they did. However, I've been learning and waiting to make my first flat panel purchase. I'm determined to get the right tv at the right price. 2 weeks ago, BB cut the price on the 50g10. The stars aligned. I applied online to get the 18 month financing, put the g10 in my cart with a PS3 and started to check out. Selected pick-up. No g10's at any of the 10 BB's within 45 mins of me. Been checking, price dropped more. Still none around. None in SEPa, Del.,Md, NJ. Pretty big market to have no product. Checked some other Panny models, same deal. Went over weekend to check in person. They had a 50g10 on display. Salsman said I could order one and it listed December as earliest arrival. Is this a BB issue or is Panny having problems delivering product to market? The 2 local Sears have no 50g10's either. Now with the V10's starting to hit, I may wait to see if they show up locally. I'm leery of buying online for some of the common reasons, plus I already hit my credit score opening the BB acount.

around here (north Texas), sears can get them in for next day delivery. I dont know about the best buys. The 54" is about a 2 week wait right now.

I actually had my BestBuy guy talk me out of a Samsung plasma and into a Panasonic. They didnt have the G10 however, so I didnt buy from them, but rather the Big River company and got an excellent deal, free shipping, etc.

Now Im just waiting for the 54" V10 to come out for my downstairs now that I have the 42" G10 up in my master bedroom.
