View Full Version : Is the Polk Audio PSW505 worth it at $219?

Reading a little on these forums it seems the opinion is that while Polk makes some decent speakers they aren't really known for making great subs. It would be going in a relatively small room, about 18X12 or so and be used for movies, gaming and music.

I have been surviving for a while now with no sub at all using the onkyo 605 with Polk Rti 8's as fronts, and R50's as rears and a CSI 3 center.

I don't need mind blowing base and if an extra $50 or so would get me a much better sub I would be all for it....

The final price after all the discounts for the 505 from newegg is 219.99 shipped, worth it? Or just a low price on a not so great sub?

Any feedback is much appreciated as I am out of my depth with Subs.

This sub does go down to 23 Hz. I have the sub that came with the Polk RM6750 set that I'm using as a go-between, and while the sub works okay for mild duty, it bottoms and floors out/rumbles/rolls when things go below 40 Hz.

I'd bet the sub you're talking about would give good value.

I haven't heard the PSW-505, but it seems like it'll be decent if you don't need really deep extension. It won't compare to the subs sold by internet direct companies like SVS, Hsu, Epik, and eD, but for $219 it might not be too bad. People are saying good things about the Premier Acoustics PA-120 which is a tad more expensive than the PSW-505. You might want to check it out as well. Here's a link to the official thread:

I had the same question although my room is a about twice your size and my budget is about $500. I was thinking of buying a pair, but I don't know if that would be better than buying a better single sub for $500.

You might get a bit more midbass output with two PSW-505's, but you won't get truly deep extension. At the $500 price point, I'd look into something more substantial from eD, SVS, or Hsu. All three companies have great subs for less than $500 that will easily outperform the PSW-505 (or even a pair) in terms of depth and SQ with music IMO.

Since your room is rather large I'd recommend bumping the budget up another $100-150 if you can afford to do so, because eD's A3-300 or SVS's PB12-NSD are a sizable step up from anything under $500 IMO. You could certainly use the output in that large room.

To be more specific, the 505's response is down 12 db per octave below 62 Hz. Even so response at 25 Hz is still better than average (for mostly B&M subs).

The price is inviting, though I prefer subs that don't roll off at 62 Hz.

In a reasonably sized listening room it would probably sound more than half decent.

I have also been eyeing this sub on newegg for 219 all day.

I want to spend 900-1200 for my 5.1 setup + receiver.
Thinking 300-400 for receiver, 300-400 for front speakers, 100-200 surround, 100-200 for center, 100-250 for subwoofer. ?

Is this the best sub for a 12*22 room at the price point of $219 shipped?

used for an equal mix of HT/gaming/music

Doing a little more research since I posted the thread it seems the Bic F12 and the PA 120 can both be had for somewhere in the same price range... Now I'm just trying to figure out which is better. :(

I found the PA for about $260 shipped and if its really the better sub an extra $40 is something I would be willing to pay. I dont want to go much over that though.

Edit-Actually I just found the PA for 229 shipped from Amazon.

I have an earlier model; PWS-505. I haven't compared specs, but my 505 is good for (pop) music, only OK for movies. It doesn't do much below ~45 Hz. I'll replace it as soon as possible.

I paid a lot more than $219 for mine, though. I'd say it's worth that, as long as you never listen to a better sub. (Generally a good piece of advice in this hobby, no matter what the device.)

Big +1. Ignorance is bliss (and a LOT cheaper!). The PSW-505 will be plenty impressive for someone who's never heard a high quality subwoofer.

So.... Is the consensus that the PA 120 is a better value at $230?

it took me a while to figure it out aswell..
it was between the
HSU STF-2
eD A2-300
SVS PB10

the I looked at the BIC H100 cause I just didnt want to spend thatmuch money... thenI read about the PA-120 and the Acoustic Audio HD-SUB12,,,, I chose the PA-120 because of internal/external finish...

the single sub did very well but I had standing waves in the room.... and do to the openess of my theater area I needed a second one

I bought the second one and holy crap.... at a lower subwoofer level,,, the gains from adding a second sub was great... and at its lower level my systems LFE is greater than when I had the single....
