This isn't another thread about seating distance, because that's not the problem.

For a little background, I have never bought an HDTV before. My TV right now is a 27" XBR Trinitron (a dynamite TV when I bought it), but that thing and the armoire it was in took up too much room. Fast forward to now - we re-did the back wall of in our family room (the most used room in the house), and left a space above the fireplace specifically for a TV. We're interested in the Panny V10, and my wife and I are stuck between a 50" and 54". On one side, the 50" looks nice, but the 54" would fit well too but it takes up more space (below are some pictures).

The bottom line is, I don't want to get a TV which overwhelms the room, but I also don't want to be kicking myself in 2 months wishing I got the bigger TV. Any help you can offer would be appreciated.

This is a picture of the room itself as it exists today:

All things being equal, always buy the largest size, otherwise you will probably regret your choice later!

See - I like the way the 54" looks too. But at the same time, this is not intended to be a home theater per-se. My kids play in this room, it's the main room we just sit and hang out.

Having said all of that, we DO like movies. You can see my 2 bookshelf speakers, and I have a Velodyne DD-15 subwoofer in the lower left cabinet. I plan to do a complete surround system, but the 54" would leave very little room on the mantle for a center channel speaker because there's only about 3 inches below the TV. So even if I went with the 54", what do I do about that?

I say definitly no smaller than a 54, the symetry look almost perfect. Are these pictures scaled? Can you post a picture of what a 58 would look like just to compare? Definitely no on the 50 though.

So yes, all of the pictures are to scale. Here's an example of the 58" (per the 800u specifications) - it's a little too big for what we're trying to do in my opinion.

I think we've decided officially on the 54". Thank you all for your help!!

Personally I would go 54" because you will regret it a few months down the line imho http://***************/9/R/i.jpghttp://***************/9/P/i.jpg
