Well this doesn't seem good. When I turn on my projector I get no picture unless I unplug all the sources. In that case I can navigate all the menus and what not. When I plug it in to something I get a red light in the diagnostic area on that back that says h.fail. Does this mean the end of my projector?

This really sucks. I am driven to drink. Is it possible I am doing something dumb or is that light a definite indication of internal problems?

Hello
Go to UTIL, 1, 6 and select each frequency, and report back if certain frequencies do not display.
.
I'm not 100% sure this is right, but I seem to remember my 8500 would give an H Fail when the focus board needed to be re-seated. You could try to re-seat it and power up the system.
Hope that helps

Try feeding it a 480p signal. If that works, try 720p. If you get an H fail, then you might have a broken wire on the motherboard.
