My god. I just discovered a link to this:

http://www.surroundpro.com/articles/publish/inside_surround/article_229.shtml

I mean, I heard about Graceland on DVD-A for years, back in the (super/amazing) "You're the One" days. My first disc on the DVD-A format, bought before I purchased my first player (fooled around with the lossy layer). This was to be the future of music. Pet Sounds, Rumours, they were all coming back there fast and furious, and the thought of perenial fav Graceland was a no brainer. Bought the RP-82 so I could play my disc properly, and have been enjoying the hell out of each and every damn disc I could get my hands on since.

This article, however, is so, so damn infuriating, only because it's clear the the disc is done and ready to be released! The only thing equally depressing is the interview on the Tommy DVD-A (I bought the SACD, actually, but borrowed it from a friend) where he's talking about the mix ALREADY MADE for Quadrophenia. When Who's Next Deluxe came out a few years ago, I thought it weird there was no surround. Then I started picking up deluxe editions of Miles' recordings, finding in the liner notes references to SACD/5.1 mixes that were pulled, clearly, after the booklets were printed.

So here we are. Some things are happening in ways I never dreamed (the success so far of BD is extremely encouraging), but we're left to wait... and wait... and hope that somehow someone will get their act together, and that those of us who love this stuff, who'd gladly pay a premium for a chance to own these, will be given our due.

Until then, we bang our heads at the though of what could, nay, should have been.

So, question, any other discs you know to be in the can (Tusk is one I remember being bandied about, for example...)? Quad mixes that simply are a disgrace that they're not out on shiny disc officially? Share your pain, if you don't mind...:)

I'm with you. I would love to have Graceland in surround. A surround mix of Rhythm of the Saints would be great too.

There was an article in "Sound & Vision" about Steely Dan's "Pretzel Logic" being completed and how they were going to do surround on all of Steely Dan's works.

Since there are several of these surround mixes finished, I guess the cost of burning a master copy for replication and then sending it out to a replication center to make copies and then distributing it to stores where it has to fight for shelf space is just too costly. Cheaper to let it sit in the can.

I stumbled upon a 5.1 DTS mix of Graceland. It sounds like it might be a proper mix and not a 2.0-5.1 upconversion. Maybe you guys could have similar luck...

Michael Jackson's "Thriller" was also supposed to get the surround treatment. In fact, Sony give Michael Jackson millions to come up with the multi-channel surround SACD of "Thriller, only to pull the plug when they couldn't get MJ to finish the project.

I believe they were also surround mixes of Elton John's albums ready for release. In fact, on his last studio album, his engineer mentioned on his blog that a 5.1 version was being produced.

Part of Elton John's catalogue was released a couple of years back in mutli channel SACD. They have been allowed to go out of print from what I understand. I have Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Madman Across the Water, Honky Chateau, and Tumbleweed Connection. Madman and Brick both sound great, the other two don't add much to the sound in multi channel and sound much better in high resolution stereo, imo.
