My area Walmart stores still are stocking the HD-DVD/DVD ST TOS S1 sets.
I would not have though they would still have stock but it seems since they are combo discs, they opted to keep them on the shelves (as regular DVD's).
Is this common practice around the country?

I noticed the same thing. Mine has Seasons 2 and 3 on DVD for $50 a pop.

I've seen it on a wide variety of stores (online and off). It's normal.

I've seen this, too. Kroger is selling combo discs with their bargain bin DVDs.

Just picked this up at my local Wal Mart. Looking forward to seeing these episodes for the first time unedited (no commercials) and in HD!!:D

Has anyone seen them in Southern California?

I just saw them at the New Walmart near where I live. The combo discs were the same price as the DVD only Season 2 and 3 sets.

After watching the 3 episodes on disc 1 of season 1 I have a question about episode order. It seemed to me that the third episode (Where No Man Has Gone Before) took place before the first to episodes on the disc (The Man Trap and Charlie X). A quick visit to the official Star Trek website revealed my suspicions were correct. Apparently the episodes are in the order in which they were first broadcast on tv.
As someone who never really saw much of the original series, this decision confuses me a little. Why were the episodes not shown in chronilogical order in their first broadcast? Why didn't they fix this in the dvd/hddvd set? Are the other seasons on disc set up this way also?
As for the HD DVD quality, I'm impressed by how good it looks considering how old it is. They must have worked quite hard to get it transferred so nicely. Was season 2 put out on combo disc as well or was the format war over before they got to it?

No Season 2 on HD-DVD unfortunately.
When you're starting from 35mm film, there's quite a large potential for a quality transfer. They certainly took advantage of the quality available to them.
