Hey guys i'm new on the forum. I have a few questions related to burning HD movies and it would be extremely helpful if i could get these questions answered.

1/If i have a HD movie on my comp, and i want to burn it to watch it on a dvd player, do i HAVE to burn it onto a HD-DVD which is a 15 gb one? or can i just burn it onto a DVD-9 or a normal DVD if they have enough space?

2/720p is 1280x720, then how come on the 2 720p movies i have on my comp when i play them on BSplayer it always says size 720x576?

3/When i convert VOB files to MPEG or WMV with Xilisoft DVD Ripper the video size is only about 4gb, the original VOB files put together is 8gb, does this mean the WMV or MPEG output of the VOB files have lower quality?

4/After converting one of my movies to WMV and deciding to burn it with Nero Vision, when i select target as DVD and imported the WMV which is 4.3gb it said 4.4gb out of 4.5gb used but then when i put in a DVD-9 and select the target size as DVD-9 it changed to 8.4gb used out of 8.5gb, does this mean that NeroVision will upscale my video quality according to the disk size

5/I was trying to edit my vob files(cutting out credits and all the unwanted bits) but i didn't know a program that can do this but i can rename the file format from .VOB to .MPEG or .WMV and then edit the video. Would i be able to edit the video, save it as WMV and then rename it to .VOB and replace the original VOB file?? would this cause any encoding problems or make the dvd corrupt?

6/I have burnt a movie to a DVD-R and it's in a foreign language and i forgot to add subtitles to it. Is it possible to add a subtitles file to the disk?
ANY response at all would be greatly appreciated :) and ty in advance guys
Peace :D

Did you check out the sticky thread at top that is all about authoring HD-DVDs?

some answers-
1.-see thread listed above- If you have a HD-DVD player you want to play the disk on then you need to author it with U-Lead Movie Factory 6 Plus to HD-DVD settings and the disk used can be a DVD-5 or a DVD-DL if the file will fit.

2. Are you sure they are 720P? Search for tsMuxeR (free) and load the file into it and it will tell you the real resolution and frame rate.

3. It is probably re-encoding (lower quality) the files so they fit on a DVD-5, how long does it take to do the conversion?

4. Nero is probably re-encoding to the size you specify, and if the new size is larger than the original size, the quality does NOT improve, just my not be as bad as a smaller size would be.

5. Video Redo can do frame accurate edits on the VOB files and then can author a new DVD from the result. You could try to insert the new edited VOB in place of the original and see if it works , but the chapters would be wrong for sure. The VOB files are mpeg format, not WMV, you cannot just re-name from VOB to WMV, they are not the same type of files.

6. If you authored the movie into a DVD format, then you should be able to author it again and add the sub titles, never done that before, so cannot give any more info.

Hey mike thanks a lot for your answers :)
As for number 3, it takes about 1 hour and 30 mins to 2 hours, i was converting the dark knight yesterday and it took about 2 hours and 20 minutes

As for question 5, it worked with either format :P and i only needed to rename it so i could edit it and then rename the format to VOB again anyway :P

Again thanks for your responses, they helped a lot

Scippi if you are dealing with HD content you should checkout the tutorial I did on making HD DVD's. It is pretty straightforward and you will have great results.

Can HD-DVDs be transferred to Blu-ray?

Yes but it's labor intensive, timeconsuming and not cheap. I'd research the procedure and the cost of blank BDs first. Might be better to hang on to HD DVD a little longer till copying is more feasible or bite the bullet and go all blu.

Edit: hey how'd we end up with the same number of posts, rdunnill?

I have Blu and I was thinking that for most of my HD-DVD titles, it might be easier just to repurchase them when the time came.

Hopefully you have some Warner titles that will make repurchasing a little cheaper using their red2blu trade in. Since I have so many titles I'll keep a red player as long as I can.

Hey! You pulled ahead in post count. :D
