View Full Version : Egyptian Theater - Please help with columns & wall!
mrsnickers 06-10-09, 09:52 AM Hi All,
I am a newbie and have always wanted to build my dream theater. I love the work of Theo and his Nile theater. I would love to start a project and post pictures here as others have done. I am fortunate to have a dedicated space to convert to a theater and have some skilled family members that can assist in the process. Can people reccomend some sources for Egyptian themed columns and wall coverings similar to what Theo used in his Nile theater. I just have no idea how to even begin looking! Thanks in Advance!
BIGmouthinDC 06-10-09, 10:30 AM Google images can be your friend.
just type in various terms like Egyptian theater, E theme rooms, E decor, E columns etc and look at the pics.
here is one from an Egyptian theater search:

bluesfan 06-10-09, 10:36 AM Cool Idea!
I found these lotus columns (http://fiberglasscolumns.com/architectural-products/columns/lotus). If they can make those in their "stone finish" that would look really nice.
Here is a person on e-bay that carries Egyptian objects. They have some pieces that you could hang on the walls or place around the room for the finishing touch. Ancient-Sculpture-Gallery (http://stores.ebay.com/Ancient-Sculpture-Gallery)
The key to the whole thing will be the look and texture of the columns/walls. (I studied architectural history in college) They need to look like stone. The Egyptians used all types of column styles so it's hard to go wrong on the shape. (palm, papyrus, lotus, polygonal) However, they almost always had very colorful hieroglyphics on them. Getting a good artist to do the painting/texturing will be crytical in pulling this off well.
IMHO the thing that really makes Theo K's Nile room are the murals.
You could name your theater "Nefertiti's Palace"
Good luck with the room!
dc_pilgrim 06-10-09, 11:10 AM There have been a couple of these here.
Take a look at this one in the archives:

There is also that big molding supplier (outwater?) that has greek/roman esque columns. They might have something that fits your build too.
Dennis Erskine 06-10-09, 11:21 AM In the theater pictured, the each column is actually two columns...stacked on top of each other. I suspect these were custom fabricated; but, you could achieve the same effect with fluted columns. Some architectural columns are straight, others (more historically accurate, have a smaller diameter at the top than at the bottom. Your next step would be to find the artist to paint them.
We can fabricate columns like that in our shop; but, custom fabrication is not inexpensive.
BIGmouthinDC 06-10-09, 12:29 PM I really like the one on the left:

bluesfan 06-11-09, 08:43 AM mdputman- That is a very nice find! I can't believe I haven't seen that one before. Those panels would work nicely if mrsnickers doesn't have the room for the columns or it would work well with the columns. I like the chests too. Venomnusss really needs to find a new coffee table though.;)

This is a quote from that thread.

I met an Artist at a trade show in January. He makes vacuum formed ABS plastic panels. That was his first time showing them. The panels were very reasonably priced. The whole room cost about $1100.

+1. It was in the "General Home Theater" forum, which I admit to reading less frequently.
Also, it looks like he paid 1600 for the panels, he hadn't included the $500 deposit in his original number. Still, great price IMO. Neat room.
mrsnickers 06-11-09, 10:36 AM Well I call tktheaters today to ask about the columns in Theo's Nile theater. was hoping they could point me in the direction of the guy who did those columns. The person on the phone had no idea, but gave me Theo K's email to ask. I said what the hell and emailed him. He gave a quick reply back that he had a personal assistant that constructs the columns and would be happy to help me out. I then asked what would be the cost for 2 seven foot columns made to look similar to the ones in the Nile Theater. He said he would work out some numbers and get back to me. Theo is a really nice guy!
BIGmouthinDC 06-11-09, 11:27 AM I've got $5 on a $4000 quote for the two.

Thanks for that correction dc. I honestly didn't look far past the pics.
mrsnickers- While you are trading e-mails with Theo, could you ask him to update his website? That is, unless he really hasn't completed a theater in 5 years. ;)
BIG- I can't take that bet. But, for mrsnickers sake, I do hope your guess is way over the quote. I doubt it is.
