View Full Version : Multi driver channel speaker choices that extend low to run with Submersives?

Hi, I am wondering if any of you could give me some direction.

I am going to be running dual Submersives in a dedicated theatre room in the basement that is 13x45 with 9 foot ceilings.

I want screen to be a 16:9 ratio and full wall width, so I can only go behind or below the screen for front speaker placement.

I want to go below.

I am considering center channel speakers on all 5 positions, I believe the extra drivers would carry the sound to a low enough frequency to blend well with the submersives, but I feel there may be a gap in the mid-bass.

This is why I am not leaning towards basic bookshelf speakers.

1) At USD budget of $500-600 per speaker, could I get some feedback as to what brands I should be listening too.

2) Am I going to need to run additional 8-10 inch subs set to fill the mid bass gap or will there even be one?

Thanks in advance guys.

Jeff

So you want to use a center or L\C\R for at least the front stage?
You can look at Axiom
http://www.axiomaudio.com/vp150.html
that is $408 each.
They have a 30 day at home trial for their speakers because they are internet direct.
Definitive Technology makes L\C\R
http://www.definitivetech.com/Products/products.aspx?path=Center%20Channel%20Speakers&productid=C/L/R2002
That is $529 each.
BTW congrats on the subs. I have one also. That is quite a nice size room. Two will be quite nice in there. The Submersive can really extend pretty high so I would not worry about getting an 8 or 10 inch sub for mid bass.
Another option may be Outlaw Audio. They have a L\C\R as well
http://www.outlawaudio.com/products/lcr.html
Price is a bit more, $649 each. But the review I just read really praised them. They are internet only so they may have a home trial setup.

Thanks for the post Mike, if a center is only able to extend to 75hz like the Outlaw... the submersives can go that high without any problems and with good blend?

I really appreciate the feedback

I don't think the sub would have any problem at all blending with a speaker like that. It may need a bit of fine tuning, like any other setup, but it won't be problematic.

Why not go AT (acoustically transparent) screen? That way, the LCR/subs could be behind the screen?

That way, you aren't limited to small/bookshelf speakers and can get some good midrange extension.

You spent $4k on subs, but only want to spend a couple hundred on each speaker? :D

a couple hundred? In Canada that translates into $5000 for 5 speakers :)
