View Full Version : Panasonic G15
RandyWalters 10-09-09, 09:17 AM That is going to be an iffy..... the American dollar has been losing strength steadily in the last couple of months and these sets are made in Mexico..They're only assembled in Mexico. All of the components are manufactured in Japan, then shipped to Mexico for final assembly.
Relapse84 10-10-09, 04:17 AM I know pricing is not to be talked about here, but I'm waiting for a 42" to drop below $900 and you people know better than I do the best places to shop online.
Can anyone recommend an online distributor? All I know of is Amazon...
Just look hard...I was able to grab a 50" G15 with a panny blu ray player for only 50 bucks more than what you're talking about. Are prices completely unmentionable or is it just where it was purchased from?
edit - PS, hi everyone! First post but I've been reading some info here the last month or so.

No way you were about to get a 50G15 for $950 without pulling some strings. I've been following the prices all year.

hhgregg quoted me VERY close to that a week ago.
Relapse84 10-10-09, 08:32 PM There was really no haggling or pulling strings involved...apparently I just got lucky...After getting rid of the blu ray player I think I made out fairly well. On a side note, anyone ever hook up their pc to their plasma and run a slide show of Evangelo's "color screens"? My DVD burner doesn't seem to want to burn the disc properly, although I may just be partially retarded. I figured that may work, but wanted to see if anyone has previously done this.
cdepaola 10-12-09, 01:08 AM Just placed my order, should have it in the next two days! Its my first flat panel and my first HD TV. I SOOOOOO cant wait to get this thing hooked up to my Onkyo TX-SR707 , PS3, and the Mordaunt Short Alumni Speakers...
Got this TV for what I consider to be a steal in the $1200 range. If thats not a good price, please don't tell me! :>
makoi84 10-13-09, 10:32 AM My questions as a G15 owner is...what is up with FOX NFL FOOTBALL? This season has been terrible broadcast quality. Watching the Bears/Lions game today I thought something was wrong with my TV, but after watching CBS overtime of the Bengals/Browns and the NBC Late game, it is definitely FOX's crappy HD. Even the highlights on the highlights of the games on the other channels show them equally bad. Anyone else notice? Or is this just a drawback of 720P on a better set where 1080 seems to make more of a difference?
-------------------------------------
I was watching the Chargers/Steelers game last night on my G15 via dish network. The HD picture was very nice on my end. I have heard a lot of people complaining about comcast HD feed, but my Dish is really good. My set is a 1080p though, but I would think that a 720p set would be pretty nice as well.
I have Verizon FiOS and all their HD channels look amazing. Travel Channel, National Geographic, and Discovery Channel especially are fantastic.

Man, now I'm gonna be kicking myself all day. Thanks! :)
RandyWalters 10-13-09, 08:32 PM Man, now I'm gonna be kicking myself all day. Thanks! :)It doesn't matter - every one of us who bought a new TV saw prices drop afterwards, so you're just a little ahead of the game ;)
I just missed the free Blu-Ray player promotion by a week, then a few weeks after that the price of my TV dropped over a hundred bucks. Oh well, i love it and it's still way cheaper than last year's model which doesn't look as good :)
Kanaris 10-13-09, 08:50 PM You guys shouldn't complain about the prices.... Panasonic is nearly double the price here... I don't know if I am allowed to say but I paid $2200 for my G15-50.... plus $300 bucks for the BD-60 panny player... :rolleyes:Plus our Kanook dollar is nearly at par.One thing I regret is I should've have crossed the border and bought in upper state NY... it's duty free cause it's made in Mexico...(or put together there).:(
willyc32 10-13-09, 10:28 PM Hey everybody! Wondering about what would be needed to connect my Panny G15 to my Macbook tethered cell phone internet via its Airport Extreme and internet sharing option. Is it even possible?
I understand I need something to connect to the TVs ethernet port like maybe a wireless router. Anybody got any advice as to if this is possible and what is needed and do-able in my particular situation? I searched and searched the forum for hours, but can't find anything.
I already can hook my computer up with mini-dvi to hdmi and audio cables, but just would like to try the Vieracast functions since it's in there anyway.
Would appreciate any and all advice and even pointing me to other links regarding this if there are any.
Thanks much!
Panasonic is testing a 1.25 firmware for the Onkyo HDMI handshake issue that should be released publicly at some point. (a few people have said within the next week). If you call them up they'll probably mail you an SD card with the update if you really need it right away.
I would expect that we'll be able to get the update via the network connection pretty soon though.
I would not necessarily assume anything about the G10 and G15 firmwares being compatible. Unless panasonic posts something clearly showing that the firmwares are interchangeable.
Panasonic hasn't been using that tech training website for the G10/G15/V10 models very much. I guess they assume most of us will use the network connection and update that way.[/QUOTE]
Just wanted to mention a post I saw while researching the HDMI handshake issue between the G10/G15/V10 and Onkyo receivers. (I'd post the link - but I'm new and can't post it until I post 3 times...doh!) It's in the G10 & Onkyo HDMI Handshake Issue Thread, on page 7, the poster is Rig85.
Looks like some G10 owners are getting a firmware update on an SD card from Panasonic in the mail. According to a copy of the document posted - the firmware update is good for G10 as wells as the G15. Not sure how to get Panansonic to send me one though.
I just got a G15 and hooked up my PS3 via HDMI to an Onkyo SR507 and have had the annoying handshake issues. I called Panasonic and the tech support guy I spoke with said there are no firmware updates for the G15 even after I mentioned it.
btbluesky 10-14-09, 08:06 PM I just ordered the p42G15 an hour ago w/ abes of maine (w/ bing cashback). Between this and the LG90, the LG is $3xx more, and doesn't have better pictures. This is the first plasma I ever had, so dunno how the 40k native contrast would be like. I'm so excited.
Gonna use it in bedroom as 50% monitor, 50% TV.

It's almost comical, but it's actually a sorry reflection on an otherwise good company.
It's likely that any firmware or software update for the G10 will also be for the G15 since they're internally the same TV, but i wouldn't go so far as to recommend using a G10 update on a G15 until it's confirmed on an official Panasonic document or web page etc.
In the meantime, i thought i read that the handshake issue was only when you're sending a 1080p signal from the Onkyo to the TV or something like that, and that setting it to 1080i instead worked fine. Maybe try that and see if you still have the handshake problem.

Yeah it's a bit sad but they gave me a case #, so I added more detailed info to my case via their Plasma Concierge website and asked if the firmware update to fix the handshake issue on the G10 could be applied to the G15. Just got an email today asking me for my mailing address so that they could send me the firmware update. They have my model number and serial number on the case. So we'll see what they send me. :)
Is there any reason NOT to buy the G15? I have owned a Samsung 8000 series LED/LCD and returned it b/c of the flash lighting and back light uniformity issues. I then picked up a Samsung B860 Plasma and ended up returning that b/c of the significant buzz that it produced which could be heard from 15' away with the volume at a normal level. I have given up on Samsung completely and am looking at the Panasonic now at much better price point. I spent around $2000 on each of the Samsungs, and the Panasonic is down in the $1200 range.
So are their any major, well known defects that I should look out for? I have read a lot and the only thing I found that was a potential deal breaker was "Color Banding" with Panasonic sets, but I hadn't seen it specifically mentioned with the G15. Has anyone experienced this phenomenon? How bad is it?
Thank you!

If you look through the G10 & V10 threads you will see that several members have reported the color banding problem. The problem seems to be with the way the AR coating is applied. Most members have not seen this. I was in Best Buy over the weekend and the salesman who assisted me in purchasing my V10 says that so far his store has not had a single G10 or V10 returned for any reason. When they go out the door, they stay out. He did mention higher than normal return rates on similar Samsung models that you mentioned. My V10 is perfect so far. I just knocked on my wooden desk so I hopefully don't have to eat my words later.
I also had a 42" 60U (2006 model) Panasonic. Unit still running with zero problems.
Good luck on your next attempt no matter what it might be.
Cable Guy73 10-16-09, 01:07 AM Brandsmart is running a good deal on the G15 50"
If you have one nearby check them out. I like being able to return locally if I can... After the TV and a mount it was still cheaper than 6ave and Abes.
willyc32 10-16-09, 11:33 PM Had it delivered yesterday morning at 8am! Has about 22 hours on it now of non HD, HD over the air TV, Computer, and DVD watching, and the picture keeps getting even better. I cannot believe how black the blacks are! Even with keeping the brightness and contrast at 50 or under for break-in this set simply has a beautiful picture.
Really love the look too! I was up in the air between the G10 and this model, but I am glad I went with the 15 just for the slightly different less silver look on the lower section if nothing else. That is sort of nit picky, and definitely personal taste, but my wife liked this one more also in the online pics so she is happy along with me.
Tonight we were watching a DVD (Deja Vu with Denzel Washington) and I put the aspect ratio so that for a few minutes the black horizontal bars were above and below the picture. Then I turned out all the lights and you literally could not see the bars at all. It was just pure black with no light in the black. Incredible! :)
Haven't tried VieraCast yet cuz I have laptop tethered cell phone internet with Alltel and I am not sure if it even possible on the G15 with cell phone internet and no router. Any ideas would be appreciated! Help me on this please.
Well here are a couple pics. Will post more opinions after we get some more hours on it. I hooked up my Macbook via the HDMI port and watched some downloaded HD mixed martial arts fights and they also looked great. Now I can REALLY see the cuts and bruises!
One thing I have noticed is that the screen on this G15 is very glare resistant. I have it in a very natural lit room right by 3 big windows and it still looks great in the daytime. Better at night for sure, but still not a problem in the daylight and sun lit room.
Viewing angles are also crazy on this set! You can literally get just about directly beside it and still clearly see the screen. My 15 year old came in the room last night and was just blown away that he was in the dining area across from the G15 almost directly to the side, and he could still clearly see what we were watching. I didn't believe him, so I got out of my chair and checked it out. He was right. Nice!
The G15 has made a great 1st impression on my whole family. I think I even caught my Australian Shepherd "Misty" watching TV more than usual :)

Cable Guy73 10-17-09, 12:34 PM The picture is amazing even at break in adjustment levels! Can't wait to tweak it out once it's done.

When taking pictures of a PDP, "do not use flash" use a tripod and adjust exposure. Go check out my Official Pioneer Kuro Pictures Thread in this forum, for some tips.. Nice PDP by the way.
rickeame 10-17-09, 06:44 PM Dumb question about the amazon support, but it appears when you are watching something you can't pause it? that seems off...how are you supposed to pause, stop, etc?

Just thought I'd post an update. I got an SD card in the mail from Panasonic and installed the update and it has taken care of my HDMI handshake issues between the G15 and my Onkyo SR507.
The instructions that came with it state that this firmware update is for the following models:
Plasma:
TC-PxxG10
TC-PxxG15
TC-PxxV10
LCD:
TC-LxxS1
TC-LxxU12
TC-LxxG1

I asked the same question in this or another thread, here's the answer I received.
"As I recall, the physical "play/pause/rewind/etc" buttons on the remote don't do anything, but their functionality has all been mapped to the D-pad on the remote (up/down/left/right/select).
Not very impressive from a usability standpoint, but it probably has to do with limitation of Viera Cast."
The D-pad worked for me.
T Ghost 10-18-09, 01:19 PM Hi guys! Long time reader of this forum, first time poster. I just got a TC-P42G15 yesterday at HHGregg. It's my 4th HD set and first plasma, first non-Samsung. I'm loving the set, read a lot of the break-in post and decided to do not the break-in process with the slide show/DVD thing. But for now I am following the precautions for the break-in period like trying to watch everything in full mode, setting the side bars on 4:3 to bright and setting the contrast and brightness to 50.
And that's where I have a litte problem. During the night the contrast to 50 is allright but during the day it a little bit faint. I found that 75-85 is the perfect setting for contrast during the day.
Will I damage anything on my new set by using contrast at 85, brightness 50 and sharpness 50 during the 100 hours break in period?
Kanaris 10-18-09, 04:20 PM I never broke in my G15-50... I kept the contrast at 65... and watched it normally...it's first hour I watched a letterboxed Bond movie.... I just avoided sports channels for their logos..I got 300 hours on it now and pumped up the contrast to 75... thats about all...
Cable Guy73 10-18-09, 04:51 PM Does the Onkyo handshake issue happen with SR606 receivers? I notice since going to this new G15 that my picture doesnt come up sometime and I have to turn my Motorola DCX off and on or sometimes wait a long time then the sound will kick on then the picture.. very odd. Never happen on the old 42" panny. I did switch my output to pass through since my last set wasnt 1080p.
rickeame 10-18-09, 06:13 PM So I was lead to believe that the G15 employed a new "reduced glare" screen. I have to say, I'm not seeing that as it's pretty glare-filled to me. My room is not super bright, but I can see the windows in this screen. Bummer.
T Ghost 10-18-09, 06:18 PM I never broke in my G15-50... I kept the contrast at 65... and watched it normally...it's first hour I watched a letterboxed Bond movie.... I just avoided sports channels for their logos..I got 300 hours on it now and pumped up the contrast to 75... thats about all...
See, that's my concern. 65 is too low for day use. Does it still true at this day and age that if you use contrast in levels like 80+ in the first 100 hours you will damage you plasma set?
I'm watching the fifth element on HBO HD right now, with contrast at 85 and it is really good but 100 is even better. At night 50 to 65 is perfect. My TV room isn't really bright, only 1 big window but I can't get it to be totally dark during the day, even with thick blinders all shut. It's Florida here and I can see the sunset from my TV room's windows.
I'm absolutelly loving the picture I'm getting from HBO HD right now on Custom and contrast 100, brightness 50, color 28, Tint 0 and sharpness 40 but I'm really worried that I'm gonna mess up something with this new set or get it to die sooner for doing what I am doing it. I'm no videophile, I will never manage to fiddle with the service menu though.
Am I being paranoid and should not feel guilty for enjoying the perfect picture of my new set with this settings for daytime or should I endure the faint picture of contrast at 50 for 4 to 6 weeks?
Thanks for the patience and for the advice!
So I was lead to believe that the G15 employed a new "reduced glare" screen. I have to say, I'm not seeing that as it's pretty glare-filled to me. My room is not super bright, but I can see the windows in this screen. Bummer.i've got a decently bright room and can see some reflection, but nothing that ruins the viewing experience when the set is on during the day.
My set is in a location where i was able to change the angle of the tv a bit more to reduce the reflection. Something to try if it's possible in your situation.
My guess is most of the 12g panasonic panels use the same AR filter/coating. At least i haven't seen anything that indicates differently.

My room is not super bright, but I can see the windows in this screen. Bummer.Whoever led you to believe that is wrong. The G15 has the exact same AR filter as the S1, G10, and V10. While it's much better than a legacy Tube TV and those fancy glossy reflective LCD and LED TVs, you'll still be able to see bright windows reflected in the screen if the TV is situated that way.

It could be I notice it more because I am still in the "break in" period and my contrast is lower than normal?
T Ghost 10-18-09, 10:26 PM Ok, I pumped the Contrast to 80 and whatever. I've been googling and searching on this forum for an answer and couldn't find anything that explains that the belief that using more than 50 contrast during the first 100 hours of a G10/G15 will damage the set is nothing but folklore.
Maybe is not but either nobody has a plausible explanation for why on the internet or is somehow a secretive information that nobody can divulge.
Thanks for not helping! :)
rickeame 10-18-09, 10:34 PM A quick question about image burn in. I'm set to standard, 50 brightness, 50 contrast and have had the set for a week so far and love it, but...
Tonight I went to put a dvd in and while the inputs were switching, I could still see the "golf channel" bug in the lower right corner. The golf channel was on all of 10 mins, so that's a bit concerning.
Is there residual "imaging" until the plasma gets a new image? this was when the screen went to black switching inputs. I have 3 more weeks to return this thing if it turns out it's defective.

Did you use the scrolling bar? It's on settings>Anti-Imaging retention>Scrolling bar.
I watched 2 quarters of NFL games today, with fixed elements on the screen and have no burning despite of having my contrast on 80.
I believe the reason for the 50/50 on contrast/Brightness restriction is to avoid the possibility that some pixels burn diferently than others by any chance, but still, if is that important, would none of the manufacturers advise their customers on the user manual at least? i know about the justification that they don't do that for marketing reasons but is it good marketing to have the majority of your customers deliberately damaging their sets due to not knowing how to use it properly?

It's just a sort of ghostly afterglow of what was recently on the screen and it's random. My 4.5 year old PX50U still does it and it has like 8,000 hours on it, but i can't see anything when i'm actually watching TV. I had the same effect on my HD Tube TV before i even got into Plasmas.

cecoleman 10-21-09, 11:22 PM Okay one thing annoying with my G15 50inch. I recently got DirecTV hooked up and connected to my Onkyo AV Receiver. It works beautifully, but now I have four devices hooked up to my receiver. For cable/satellite you almost have to use Size 1 overscan enabled for TV watching, (NOW THE ANNOYING PART) on my Custom Mode if I change this to Size 1 then change it to Game mode for XBOX it retains the Overscan setting across all picture modes (besides THX where its locked on Size 2). I don't want the overscan for Xbox or Blu Ray and now not only do I have to change the picture mode but also the overscan settings. Anyone else annoyed by this?

Have already asked about buying plasmas online and favorable responses allowed me to go with it. Very nice folks to deal with, good return policy.
Wall mounts - I guess this set has the VESA mojnt screws? Going shopping for a tilt and swivel mount next. This site helped me make the decision on this set. fantasitc resource. Te G10 was actually more money!

I'm drawn to the Panasonic G15 and the Samsung B850/B650 at 50". I might give the Panasonic the edge based on what I have read.
I'm concerned about the mounting Panasonic uses because I don't think it is VESA. I want to keep my old stand, and of course it is VESA. Do I need to give up on Panasonic because of this, or this there an adaptor of some kind?
If this has been answered before, I'm sorry, but it's new to me.
djm3801 10-22-09, 08:44 PM Thanks for the reinforcement, Rick. I found them VERY helpful. Cannot believe the blu ray deal. Did not go for extended warranty - I never do. I think these DO have VESA mounts. I hope so - just ordered a monoprice 4926 mount. They had a great person on their chat line as well. They had sets that the mount would not fit. Totally knocked out by their prices. have heard nothing but good stuff about Monoprice. This forum kicks serious butt for helping folks decide.
djm3801 10-22-09, 09:05 PM Panny web site says bolt pattern is 400 x 300. I see the G10 is on sale at B&H too. Just missed that, essentially the same set.
Puttersea 10-23-09, 12:01 PM Vanns is one of the better online companies. I like the fact that they are located in Montana. Plus they have a 2 week return policy on their TV's which is better than some where once it is delivered and signed for it is between you and the warranty.

AtlBlazerMan 10-23-09, 12:12 PM Just thought I'd post an update. I got an SD card in the mail from Panasonic and installed the update and it has taken care of my HDMI handshake issues between the G15 and my Onkyo SR507.
The instructions that came with it state that this firmware update is for the following models:
Plasma:
TC-PxxG10
TC-PxxG15
TC-PxxV10
LCD:
TC-LxxS1
TC-LxxU12
TC-LxxG1
:D
Who do I call to get that update? I have a G15 on the way to me. I also have an SR507 receiver.
Thanks!

I called Panasonic's customer service number for their plasma tvs - 1.800.973.4390. Just be explicit in asking for firmware update 1.25 because you have an Onkyo receiver.
When I called they claimed there was no firmware update available, but they gave me a case number. I then went their site, found my case and added more info it. I mentioned that I had seen online talk about a firmware update for G10/V10/G15 tvs and Onkyo receivers and asked for it. A couple of days later they sent me an email saying they were going to send me the firmware update via SD card.
Good luck!

AtlBlazerMan 10-23-09, 12:54 PM BTW, Panasonic also just told me that there's no break-in period necessary on these newer plasmas (i.e. G15.) In other words, plug n' play.
Why do I read so much about the need for that in here??
djm3801 10-23-09, 01:59 PM Checked Crutchfield and their price did not match. Do not need to call the place where I bought it for info, just need for them to stand behind it with respect to it working or not working. Panasonic or this web site will take care of technical needs. A sales outfit cannot possibly have in depth technical information on all products they sell. I woud guess buying from Vann's may be a step ahead of BB or Sears but not the same as Crutchfield with respect to tech support. WOuld go to Panny if I had to. I make my own decisions based on data obtained in places like this site. But I realize many folks rely on sales reps for opinions, and I feel bad for them.
RowdyUSP40 10-23-09, 09:49 PM I’m seriously considering a TC-P42G15 or 46 for my bedroom and was wondering about wall mounts. I’ve looked at the OmniMount UCL-L (http://www.onecall.com/ProductDetails.aspx?id=33908) but think it’s over priced like most wall mounts. I’m thinking the mount (ID:3724) from Monoprice (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10828&cs_id=1082806&p_id=3724&seq=1&format=2) will do even though it’s not as nice “looking” as the OmniMount.
Just wondering what some of you have and any comments/info you could share on the subject.
Also, are G 15s compliant with the VESA standard? Sorry, I don’t know much about this or seen anything about it on Panasonic’s web site.
Hey guys I'm new to the forum and I'm comparing the samsung b650 and the g15, will make a purchase within 2 weeks. I'm curious if you can tweak the settings on the THX mode. Reading C-nets review they said they liked that all four presets were adjustable but that seems to be contrary to what I read here. Just hoping I could get some clarification. Also in the service menu is there a grayscale balance that might help with the color issues i've read about?

That's a new one. I guess there's always gotta be one guy/gal that has a bad experience....

THX setting can be tweeked a little bit but there are just basic settings, unless you want to venture into the SM and tweek it there. The B650 will provide you with more ability to change settings without going into the SM. This one area where the B650 outshines the G15.
Puttersea 10-26-09, 12:32 PM THX Mode: gWelch the only way your going to know if you like THX mode is watch it in a totally dark room with a blu ray disc. It is pretty much 50/50 with people liking it. I personally am very happy with THX mode and have just tweeked it just a bit using serialmikes setting which I believe just turn up the brightness just a bit on that mode.
I encourage you to take a good look at both of the TV's, do your research and decide which one you feel is best for you. Both are excellent TV's, both have their pluses and minuses when put side by side.
jasonvw 10-26-09, 09:52 PM Amazon has an amazing deal on the 50 G15 right now.........
I have few models to compare in my area, the closest for comparison are the 50b550 and the 50s1 so I'm going to make my purchase online. The first time I saw the s1 something about it moved me, it was all alone, no retina searing lcds/leds to mute it out or dull it down for me -blu-ray, large showroom, lots of florescent lights- and despite less than optimum conditions quite a remarkable PQ. In fact it was what made me start pursuing the Plasmas over the lcds/leds that I was looking at. I am convinced Plasma is the way to go for me. But I'm kind of a perfectionist when it comes to the picture on my set and I can appreciate the user controls for picture adjustment. If the g15 is close enough out of the box and if the s1 is any indicator of the PQ I might expect it may be easier to let go of :D control.
Are the secondary colors that cnet talks about being quite off standard even noticeable, has anybody been able to compensate if they are?
RandyWalters 10-27-09, 10:02 AM Amazon has an amazing deal on the 50 G15 right now.........None of those 50" G15s on Amazon's site are being sold by Amazon - they're all 3rd party vendors, most of which i'd never buy a large TV from.

Its funny because the price is cheaper on Amazon even though its being sold by 6ave then if you went direct to 6ave. By about $75. Ive bought (non TV) items from 6ave before and have been happy.
jasonvw 10-27-09, 04:07 PM Please be advised that the free BD60K BR offer is NOT being honored by all retailers. 6ave is not offering it. Amazon appears not to be. ABT is.
Ordered mine today. Looking forward to it!
cecoleman 10-27-09, 04:50 PM Print the lowest price you find and take it to HHGREGG... they'll match it and no waiting for deliver! That's what I did back in July... They came up big as at the time it was stickered at 1899 I think, I walked out at 1340!
DavidK44 10-27-09, 04:57 PM Been lurking and reading on the forum for a while now, and finally pulled the trigger on a 50" G15 last week. I took advantage of the free Panny BD60 offer along with a really good price from US Appliance. It was just delivered today, and I'm in the middle of setting it up. Awesome display! Set-up is much easier than the last TV I set up, which was a Phillips 37" widescreen CRT. The jump in PQ has been amazing.
This forum has been a great resource. Kudos to everyone who posts!
Hey guys,
I've been following this thread for a while now and picked up a G15 over the weekend. I don't have get cable until next week and can only watch regular DVDs for now, so I'm just getting ready to be blown away!
Anyhow, my question stems from the fact that I bought the set open box...is there anything I should be looking for?? There are no signs of visible damage, blemishes or scratches...
I got it for C$1099 (with full warranty and 30day return)...should I have paid more for a new one?? :S
sonny21 10-27-09, 06:33 PM Hey guys. I am leaning towards the G15 but I am very concerned about the black levels doubling after 300-400+ hours, http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1167339&page=14
So has anyone that has used theirs for that amount of time can tell any changes in the black levels? I am hoping to hear from most of you.

I am leaning towards the G15 but I am very concerned about the black levels doubling after 300-400+ hours, http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1167339&page=14I never really paid too close attention to the black levels when i got the set at the beginning of August. I've got about three or four hundred hours now on my G15.
Last night I was watching Heroes and I have to say the black levels were pretty darn good. I might try rewatching some movies I watched when i first got the set to see if I notice any major changes.
At this point....i'm just setting aside their opinions as most of it's just idle speculation on what's happening to a handful of sets. It could easily explained away as a small batch of bad components. Very few of those people in that topic actually contacted Panasonic about it. Pendragoon being the only one really pursuing it.
Kanaris 10-27-09, 08:22 PM I also got my G15 in mid August.... and I got around 400 hours on it.... I think IMO it's better than ever.... but now all this news has got me thinking... to keep checking it.... its like a zit you didn't know you have until someone points it out... :p
Okay, I am new to the HD game and the forum. I bought a G15 about 3 weeks ago and had ATT U-verse installed about 2 weeks ago. I am noticing a lot of what I believe is termed "macroblocking" when watching any HD sports. It is driving me crazy. Is this a ATT compression issue or the Tv? I am contemplating moving up to the V10, but am afraid the issue is the signal quality and these artifacts will still be an issue with the V10-am I correct? Anyone else have this problem?
It is the 50 inch model, and I am sitting about 8 feet away.
damba98 10-28-09, 10:38 AM Oh, yes. That definitely sounds like the macroblocking I saw on my two friend's newer HDTVs. They were lured to U-Verse from Comcast based on price and ended up with buyer's remorse based on the somewhat poor quality that you are experiencing w/ some content. How do some of your other frequently viewed channels/content look on that HDTV?

It is the 50 inch model, and I am sitting about 8 feet away.AT&T U-Verse is horrible. I've seen it in three different households now on good HD TVs and the compression artifacts and macroblocking are worse than any provider i've seen and it's totally unacceptable. I also did a lot of internet research and found tons of similar complaints about their picture quality. I just switched to AT&T DSL service a few months ago and they've been hounding me to switch from TWC to their U-Verse but i finally told them that i've seen how bad it is and i wouldn't take it if it were free - and i'm serious. It's worse than the poorest compressed Comcast signals i've seen and that's pretty bad.
Connect an HD antenna and compare sports on the same local channels and you'll see how much better it looks over the antenna (i've already done this at my friend's houses). Try to get an AT&T tech over on a weekend and show him how it should look, and see if there's anything they can do to improve the signal.
The picture looks great on some of the other HD channels, it is only during fast moving scenes. I just wanted to be sure it was the signal quality and not the Tv itself. I didn't know if the faster refresh rate of the V10 would make a difference. Although from what I am reading that faster refresh rate is really only for movie playback (I think). Thanks for the responses, I will give it a try.

I'm way over 500 hours and I haven't noticed any unnatural changes since I bought mine in Early July. Chad B. calibrated in late July and recently stopped in a week or two ago as well at my request to measure the Standard Mode settings and he didn't notice any change in anything. He told me right away that it was still very accurate.
Thanks Randy, very helpful.
I've read along to everyone's comments with respect to the G15 and appreciate the time and energy put forth. I'm sure there are others out there like me who are gathering info to make a good purchasing decision. I've gone ahead and purchased the G15 over the V10 (50") as this set will be a second set in my living room (primary set is 50" Elite). Couldn't justify spending an extra $700-$800 for a few "whistles & bell's so to speak). No doubt the V10 is an excellent set. However, I've got my other set to fallback on when needed.
For those of you who are ready to buy, check out slickdeals.net - G15 (50") + DMP60 blu-ray (free) + $60.00 discount thru "Bing" = purchase price just over eleven hundred total. Deals only going on for a few more days and I'd jump as I can't imagine you'd get much better pricing even with "Black Friday" type sales close upon us.
Just thought I'd send a little helpful info back to those who helped me out.
Thanks for the contributions and information. I'll certainly contribute when/where I can.
Drdiaboloco 10-28-09, 11:15 PM I've got a G15 on the way and I can't wait, but one thing has me scratching my head...
There appear to be two different bases (stands) in the photos earlier in this thread. One looks like the one that I see in pics of the G10, with an oblong base, the other is a much broader, circular base. I presume it doesn't come with both in the box... Did they change the design of the base partway through the production run?

here's the link to the manual as it has decent pictures of it:
http://service.us.panasonic.com/OPERMANPDF/TCP42G15.PDF
it looks like the 42" G15 base might be slightly different as the manual lists a different part number. smaller perhaps?
some of the pictures in this topic aren't of the G15 and were used to determine the "slimness". Just something to doublecheck. If you've got links to the particular pictures, that might help.

I have read that the G10/15 has a flickering issue with 24p content played at 48hz. I tried it last night and did not notice anything, picture seemed great. What does this flickering look like? I had read that in panning shots with light colors it tends to flicker, I may have noticed a very slight flicker but would it be substantial if it was a problem? I was watching the 3rd Mummy movie but did not seem to notice much of a flicker if at all-has this issue been resolved with these Tv's? Just curious, thanks.

The flicker is just that, where the screen appears to have a subtle flashing mostly visible in light rendered scenes. You see it most in outdoor shots where a white sky is prevalent. It's also very visible in scenes where there is are fluorescent overhead lights. Dark scenes are hard to distinguish. It does make the picture smoother as well as add some depth to it. I notice it when its on, but don't pay attention to it after I've had it on for a while. My eyes adjust I think.
djm3801 10-30-09, 06:08 AM Well, got my G15 from Vann's yesterday. Perfect condition. Got the DMP-BD60 Blu-Ray and the APC power protector (a great price) the day before. All packaged well. Yellow Freight did a nice job all around. Setip up on tyhe floor for now to break in. Will be watching it but running slides when not. Watched a little VieraCast you tube. Pretty cool. Numa Numa is still funny.
Very happy so far. Anxious to get the thing mounted this weekend. Monoprice mount was a STEAL. That company is a find and a half. This site was invaluable. Need to go cabinet shopping now.

I have personally dealt with MANY of the customer support representatives at Vanns.com and can honestly say that it has been the best customer support experience I have ever had. I unfortunately had a couple items damaged upon delivery and they were VERY easy to work with to get replacements sent out. All of the representatives have been very knowledgeable and helpful. I went into the VieraCast menu today and it mentioned a new version of software. My TV updated to version 1.28. This mirrors someone's comments in the G10 topic about a new firmware update being released.
I would imagine it contains the onkyo fix.
The previous official software version was 1.19, but panasonic was sending out 1.25 via SD card.
I'm curious what other fixes they made since it's a higher number. (vieracast related fixes probably)
djm3801 11-02-09, 07:42 PM G15 wall mount - the holes for the mount are in a shallow channel that runs vertically on the back of ther set. Maybe 1/8" deep. Is it necessary to use spacers? Would rather have as much contact between the set back and brackets. Anyone experience this and how did you solve it? Thanks. 25 hours into burn in.

Chat line with monoprice and agent there said that yje monooprice 4926 can be mounted either way. Anyone else experience this?
scootypuffsr 11-04-09, 12:10 AM I just pulled the trigger on the 50g15(+free bluray player +free delivery +free hdmi cable + good finance deal) at my local B&M for about $1200. It was due to be delivered today. However, I just got a call from them saying they are on backorder and my delivery date will be pushed back up to a week. Their sale this week is the 54S10+ all free goodies for the same price. They want to substitute the 54s10 for the 50 g15. The included bluray has vieracast so that feature on the tv would be redundant.
Should i wait or should i get the bigger, less featured tv?
Any members who have owned or own both sets i would love to know your thoughts.
Thanks

It's already been reported that it didn't change the picture quality at all.
There is another update to correct an HDMI handshake issue with certain Onkyo A/V Receivers but you have to call Panasonic and ask them to mail you an SD card with the update on it. This update also does nothing to the picture quality.
If Panasonic makes an update available, it will either be available via Vieracast or they'll put it up on their support site for you to download and apply manually:

RandyWalters 11-06-09, 10:28 AM Can anyone recommend a super slim low profile wall mount for the P50G15? Especially interested if anyone had success with the Monoprice 5918 mount. Any problems with HDMI or LAN cables using a low profile mount???I can't comment on the mount, but the HDMI ports on the back of the TV are side-by-side and are located very near the side of the TV so if you mount the TV very close to the wall, there might not be enough clearance because the HDMI cables will stick out 3-4 inches from the back of the TV. You'd have to bend them sharply which is bad for the cable and probably bad for the port itself. One of my cables has a ferrite core and sticks out almost 5 inches before i can bend it safely. I don't know what Panasonic was thinking when the moved these ports to this location on the back.
But luckily, Monoprice sells 90 degree HDMI Port Savers in various configurations (up, down, left, or right). The best ones to get would be the one that points upward since there's nothing blocking the area above those two HDMI ports. That would enable the cables to run straight upward, flat against the back of the TV where you can gently bend them from there. You can't use the ones that turn to the side because the HDMI ports are next to each other, and the Component input is next to the left HDMI port so there's no room to the side. And the RF input is directly below the HDMI ports so that kinda blocks the bottom. This same adapter would also be good to use on the side HDMI input so the cable doesn't stick straight out sideways which always looks dumb.
Monoprice item # 3850 (i would buy two for the rear, and one more for the side if you ever plan to use it):

No worries... I have DirecTV with my G15 and it rocks hard!
djm3801 11-07-09, 07:13 AM Randy, did not see those port savers or even think to look. Thanks. I do not have a space dilemma but these just seem to make sense for a wall hung tv.
Got the 4926 single arm tilt and swivel mount as i said earlier. Ordered 4 - 10 foot HDMIs in colors and an optical = arrived today - very nice cables. Prices are amazing. Everyone i refer to them is amazed by the prices.
Paul210 11-08-09, 11:02 AM Greetings,
Just received my 50G15 on Friday with the BD player from Vann's. So far, I'm having a difficult time finding any settings for even remotely accurate color rendition. I suppose that I'm more critical than the average person in this respect, but I would assume that a high percentage of the subscribers to this forum would be in the same boat as me.
I've had Chad B. calibrate both my previous displays and was very happy with the end result. It's just that after reading everyone's impressions of this set, I assumed it was going to be better out-of-the-box, and perhaps I wouldn't need to pay for a professional calibration. Apparently my assumptions were wrong.
Thoughts?

It sounds like a V10 would be a better fit for you. Panasonic EPP has the 50V10 for about 1500 and the 54V10 at approx. 1700.

When these models were first released, there wasn't much distinction in the announcements between some of the European models and the US models.....which explains the confusion. There are slight differences between the two with Divx/dlna being one of them.

I had mine calibrated by Chad with terrific results. Out of the box though it was not terribly inaccurate. Mainly it ran a bit cool in HDMI and a bit too warm on the cable input. Based on my knowledge of pre and post calibration. You should disable all the "enhancements" and noise reducers. Your Contrast/Brightness/Color settings should be at or around 60/50/40. Turn your Sharp near 30 as Chad B. had a very convincing pattern that revealed anything higher actually hindered your picture quality. Also you operate in Custom or Game mode. Both modes are identical, only Game has more aggressive image retention reduction. I actually use the Game mode because a majority of my viewing is sports with lots of static score lines.

Just received my P50G15 on Friday and enjoyed for 2 days.
Then, bad thing happened Today (Sunday). My g15 quit in the middle of Giants and Chargers football game. All of a sudden, the screen turned black (only one level of black :( ) and leaving the power indicator (small red light) blinking.
Maybe just some fuse blow off? or...
Does anyone has similar experience?
Any suggestions or help?
Thanks

If you can't get anything to work at all, i'd consider doing an exchange wherever you bought it from. If that's not possible, then try panasonic support.

You'll need to return the TV to where you bought it, or call Panasonic and arrange for warranty repair.
All you can do in the meantime is unplug it for a minute, then plug it back in and see if it comes on. Sometimes that will get it working again, but the fact that it went off in the first place means that it will happen again and get worse.
Smitty1031 11-09-09, 01:38 AM Need Help. I'm a total newb. I just got a 46G15 and have been breaking it in using the break in slides and some watching on the recommended low contrast settings.
I was checking the settings this morning and noticed that the color matrix was set to SD. As well it was grayed out. My cable provider said that this could not be set because I had connected my PVR with an HDMI cable. I replaced the HDMI cable with component connections but the color matrix setting has remained grayed out.
I was messing around with a couple of the buttons on the front of the PVR and noticed that the color matrix setting switched to HD. On the slide show setting I still cannot get the color matrix to HD.
I'm about 96 hours into the break in. Will the SD setting screw things up? Does anybody know how to set the color matrix setting? Why is my color matrix setting grayed out?
Any help that anybody might care to extend would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance !!!
nychang 11-09-09, 07:38 PM Thanks, speck9 and Randy.
Called Panasonic tech service today. As usual it's a long waiting on phone (about 15 minutes). Service Reps were pretty nice. After collecting some info about TV and me, he gave me a local service contractor name and will call and set up an in-house service later.
One of the info they collect is the blinking frequency (in my case is 8) of the red power on indicator and said that means some special error message for the technician.
Will post later when my TV come alive again.
Thanks again.
djm3801 11-14-09, 07:54 AM FYI - I used a Monoprice 4926 single arm mount for my 50" G15. Went up fine - got 3 lag screws per side into studs. This mount swings 90 degrees either way but does not quite center on the studs - set can be moves side to side on the mount. Also, the arm itself swings in different directions do you can mount it as it comes from the box = center hinge to the right - or you can flip it and mount it upside down per Monoprice.
They said there is slight sag and there is as would be expected when you hang an 80 pound object off an arm and 20" from the wall. But it is VERY solild and I am impressed. A little WD40 and it move very smoothly. If you need a tilt and swivel, look at this one for less than $50. Their cables are excellent quality and value as well. Great source found a this site. I would have paid a LOT more if I had not found it.
steve0617 11-14-09, 05:50 PM Hi all
Have a G15 arriving this week. Trying to buy a stand that will allow the viewing height that I'm looking for and I need a measurement of the height from the shelf of a TV stand (using the pedestal) to the center of the screen.
I know that the height from the specs with and without the stand, but I'm looking for how tall is it from the shelf the TV will sit on to the center of the screen?
Thanks

TC-P50G15.Ah, well on my 46 incher the center of my screen is 17" above the table top. Since the 50" G10/G15 is two inches taller than mine, i'd guess the center would be about 18" above the table top if that gives you any idea.

My options are rather limited up here in Canada. I got it from Futureshop, one of the big box stores. Everybody else locally is selling the G10 for the same price.
jasonvw 11-15-09, 06:18 PM Does anyone have a link to D-Nice's suggested break in settings?
MrKegFlex 11-15-09, 06:34 PM I've had my G15 for just over a week now, the picture is amazing. I'm still just using the standard settings and have tried a couple custom settings here and there. I keep going back to the standard as I haven't found anything I consider better yet, hoping to play with some more settings this week. If you are considering this tv, you won't regret it.
As a FYI to those considering the G15, I was able to get HH Gregg to price match the Panasonic Direct EPP on the G15... YMMV, pretty nice though as the Panasonic EPP site is offering a $200 instant rebate on top of the EPP price at the moment. Worked out good for me as HHGregg is offering a SAC option on top of that.

I've been wanting to know the same thing. Review sites complain about the 48hz mode, so I don't see the point of it. I'm concerned that all 24p material will have the flicker in the G10/G15. Can one engage 60hz with 24p material?

Yes you can use 60hz with 24p material and it looks fine.
In 48hz mode I notice the flicker, but only about the first 10 minutes of the movie or when there is extremely bright scenes. I've watched I-Robot, The Dark Knight, and I am Legend in 48hz and it only bothers me when I first flip it over there. To be honest though, I can't see the improvement in picture/motion in 48hz and probably won't use it much anymore other than out of curiosity.
You should really view it yourself first if you can. But only if you think it's important, which I don't.

So what is supposed to be the benefit of the 48hz mode when there is flicker? It seems to me it would be more logical and sensible to have a 72hz mode like the Kuro's since that is of course faster than 60hz and still a multiple of 24hz.

I just received my 50G15 this morning. In watching the BD of 'I Am Legend,' in THX mode, both my GF and I can clearly see the juddering at 48hz when watching the movie with the BD set at 24fps. Changing it to 60hz eliminates the judder. I had seen this when I was shopping TVs and decided the 3/2 was fine and didn't make me want to upgrade to the V series with its 96hz.
As a weird aside, the firmware requires updating. I've tried twice and it dies right at 30% downloading saying the server is busy (or something like that). I then have to press and hold the power button on the set itself until it turns off. It then takes some time to restart. I'm assuming it's wiping out the unfinished firmware.
I'll just try later.

Well that's good to know the 60hz setting gets rid of it. Like I said, I fail to see the point of even making 48hz an option.

I always wondered about that too. Maybe it's a no brainer for them to add it to the set and it gives them a marketing angle? Still, something like this should just work.

Could be. That's a stupid marketing angle when other manufacturers have 72hz, 96hz, etc. If they're going to add something to allegedly "help" 24fps content, it's certainly not 48hz. Apparently the R&D staff was drinking on those days.
sonny21 11-16-09, 06:00 PM Yeah it made no sense for the 48hz. G10/15 was suppose to have 96 and do in Europe versions but not in us/canada versions.
I don't know why we get screwed, I guess they know if it did have 96hz, what's the point for the V.
60hz with 3:2 pull down should be fine, but I think you will notice judder in fast action scenes. Since that was the whole purpose of doubling of 24.
I know the V has the one sheet of glass design, does the G15 cause more reflection because of the different design?
Thanks for the replies btw.

The point is to reproduce the experience of watching a movie in the theater. You do realize how film projectors work, right? There is a shutter in the projector that doubles each film frame to give us ---- 48Hz. Do you guys run screaming out of a movie theater screaming "look at all that damned flicker! The madness of it all!"
If you use THX mode in a darkened room you will achieve similar light levels to a theatre and not notice much in the way of flicker. That is the point. Did you know a typical movie screen is so huge that you only get about 16fl of light off it? THX mode will give you about 28. Too much brightness shows flicker.

Since mine is the sentiment of others here, I fail to understand why you chose to quote mine with your condescending attitude.
Apples to oranges. A film protector and screen are nothing like a CRT TV or monitor, or flat panel TV. While technically, by definition, both are "Hz" since they are both some kind of "cycles-per-second", obviously there is no flicker when you're watching actual film @24fps. But obviously for example there is flicker if you could watch your PC monitor or TV at 24hz! There's flicker as high as 85hz! (As least I can see flicker up to 85hz). Even if the #'s are the same, the frequency of scanning lines is not the same as the frequency of frames-per-second because they have different characteristics and other variables involved. I would guess perhaps possibly since one is optics and the other is not.

kriztoff 11-18-09, 03:13 PM I've been lurking for a month or so doing research for buying a hdtv. I was always leaning towards a plasma, but this forum and other sources convinced me to go out an make the purchase. So, I've had my 46g15 for about 3 weeks now. I'm very impressed with the picture and like everything so far except one thing. I'm not sure if this is a signal issue or something to do with the tv. I've searched around and haven't found anything describing exactly what I am seeing so I'll try my best to describe it:
On the left side of the screen 1-2 pixels wide top to bottom seem to have a distorted colour compared to what they should be. If the screen background is a mid level tone to white colour the vertical row of pixels will appear lighter (close to white) than they should be. They are constantly changing colour but are not what they should be. On darker backgrounds it is not as noticeable. My sources are a hdtv box and PS3 unfortunately still hooked up via component until I get my HDMI cables I have on order. They are not through a AVR. My first though was just the cable signal having artifacts or some overscan thing.
I can try to take a picture of the issue tonight if that would help. If it is the TV I can exchange it still for a week or so. Anyone know what it is I am describing?

I don't have the tv, but I read something about those stuff I think. It would be helpful for rest of us if you do take a good quality picture of it.
cecoleman 11-18-09, 04:32 PM I've been lurking for a month or so doing research for buying a hdtv.

SOUNDS LIKE OVERSCAN ISSUE.
Your source is outputing material that would require overscan. Most cable and satellite sources need it due to noise around the edges of the picture and signal. Easy fix, hit MENU...PICTURE....scroll to ADVANCED PICTURE...then navigate to HD SIZE. Make sure it is set to SIZE 1 for TV, while your other sources like Blu-Ray can probably do Size 2.
Hope this is what was wrong.

This sounds defintely like an overscan issue. In the picture menu change the Picture Size from Size 2 (pixel x pixel mapping) to Size 1 (5% overscan). Many SD stations will show the control signal on either the top or one side of the screen. This is the station, not your set. I don't think component cables should make a difference here as any signal from your HDTV box would be a maximum of 1080i or 720p and typically the stations where you see the control signal are 480i or 480p.

bboyd55 11-19-09, 04:10 PM I called Panasonic support today and they did say they are having a problem with the Vieracast firmware update process. They did not give me any timeframe it when it should be fixed but they said they would send me an email when it is running.

ttime4four 11-20-09, 02:08 AM Picked up my 42 G15 today - so far so good. Right out of the box, PQ looks great and the Viera stuff works well. Good deal from my local Video Only - $50 less than Amazon with a free BR player to boot [DMP-BD60PK]. Went with the 42 because nothing bigger fits in my wall unit. The aesthetic committee chairman [wife] wouldn't let that one go.
Probably going to wait a couple of weeks before getting started on calibration settings.
jasonvw 11-20-09, 06:02 PM Finally set up my 50 G15 today. Running the break in slides now for a few days.
Clint S. 11-21-09, 05:33 AM Finally set up my 50 G15 today. Running the break in slides now for a few days.
That reminds me, I assume the same break-in slides that's talked about on the Kuro threads can be used for the G15?
Treyster 11-21-09, 04:44 PM Has anyone else experienced a lack of brightness control on a 50" G15? My sources are a DTV HD DVR and a Panasonic BDP. I can set brightness at 0 to 100 and nothing changes for both sources and on all picture modes. This is a pain since I can't quite hit the sweet spot for black levels. If I run the "black level" setting on light, I get a washed out picture with good detail, if I run "black level" dark, I get too little detail but great black levels. I can mess around with other settings and it helps some but I would love a brightness control so I could pick one of these settings and adjust as needed. I called Panasonic support and they had me reset the set to all default settings, then try it again. No change. Then the lady said she was viewing my exact set and changing the brightness levels had no effect on her test set either. I find this hard to believe. Anyone else tried adjusting brightness only to find it apparently does nothing???
cecoleman 11-21-09, 04:59 PM Have you tried adjusting the brightness level with a test pattern? SOmething like the AVCHD calibration patterns for instance? The user level settings are pretty subtle per tick, but you should tell something with a test pattern. Generally the best setting for your model (same as mine) is between 45-55.
Treyster 11-21-09, 05:01 PM I have not yet purchased a calibration disc. However, I see no difference between 0 and 100. It is very frustrating.
djm3801 11-21-09, 05:38 PM I have not messed a lot with the brightness but I will say it does not seem to do much.
Treyster 11-21-09, 06:18 PM I downloaded the AVCHD file, burned to DVD and I can see changes with brightness. So it obviously does work. Thanks for the suggestion. Now I just need to play with the settings some more and see if the ever so slight changes can get me the results I seek. Thanks again. Atleast I know the control isn't broken!! :)

DJ Funktacular 11-21-09, 07:39 PM First post, so here goes:
I actually ordered a 50" G10 and after 2 days of waiting, all the local store I shop at can get it the G15.
The salesman said that he can't even get the G10.
I wanted a V10, but it's $900 more than I would have had to pay. (no price talk though). Too much for me ;)
He matched the price of what I was going to pay for the G10, since he talked me out of BB, and they also offer a loaner if anything goes wrong in the future. They also offer furniture and appliances, and in the next 3 years, we'll be in the market for more of that...Anyhow...
After speaking with him 2 days ago, he still doesn't know when he is getting my tv. I've already paid for it, it's coming, and he said that he is high on "the list" since he sells a ton of their products at his store. He even forwarded an email of me asking about the tv to his rep, since my wife's family is coming over to our house for Thanksgiving for the 1st time.
Any word on the 50" G15's availability?
Thanks, and I'm sure I'll ask some questions on mounting this tv,and other stuff to make it great!
bigwise1 11-21-09, 09:22 PM when did the 46" g15's start shipping? this thread started in june so i'm assuming june but on the back of mine it says it was made in may. i wish i would have got a more current one.
cecoleman 11-21-09, 10:27 PM Have not heard of a supply issue... my boss actually text me tonight saying he bought a 50" G15 at HHGregg for a grand flat. Wow. So they are out there.
Trefle10 11-22-09, 12:54 PM I finally saw it at the right price (Canadian...)
Great deal this weekend on FutureShop online! cant go wrong with all you guys saying how fantastic this HD TV is.
It will be my first HD tv!
Quite exciting. I will finally be able to enjoy the PS3 to its fullest.
I'll let you know when it will be here!
Thanks for all the info on this great website!
tonycincy85 11-22-09, 01:03 PM planning on picking up a 50g15 from HHG later this week. What's the build date of your sets? I like "fresh" electronics. :)
I just bought my 42G15 yesterday from 6ave in Delaware. Plugged and played it for a brief time, then put it away in the box since I'm moving to my new apartment soon. PQ looked incredible when I put it on USA HD with Pirates of the Caribbean on, just wow. The blacks were incredible, but I had put it on the Vivid setting, probably not the smartest idea right out of the box.
My main question, I didn't buy the 3-year extended warranty with the tv, did I make a really big mistake not getting the extended warranty? I'm afraid I won't be able to buy it now after leaving the store, at least that's what the salesman there said...must buy the extended warranty with the tv.
Thanks!

For HD sources you should see almost no change. For the G and V series and most sources, sharpness should be zero. Remember this is a legacy setting left over from the original color TV's in the 1950's. I don't think there has been a set that required this since the early 1970's.
djm3801 11-22-09, 06:46 PM I got my set in late October and it had a September build date. I have about 180 hours and I can say that the set looks a lot better now than when io got it. Used break in slides almost exclusively for first 110 hours or so.

Actually I watched Chad B. calibrate my G15 and he showed me pretty convincingly the effects of sharpness on my set. He found setting it at 30 was just about right based on a pattern he had. He showed how the sharpness changed the coloring on one of his patterns when it was incorrect. I saw it and believe that its not completely irrelevant, but usually exaggerated. He saw that 25-35 range showed minimal change but appeared accurate.
spikspgl 11-22-09, 09:17 PM i'm looking at the specs for the G15 and i'm curious about the difference between "24p Cinematic Playback" and "24p Playback(2:3)".
the V10 is the only one with Yes for both of those, while the G10 and G15 only Yes to "24p Playback(2:3)"
Thank you

Short answer:
The G10/G15 can show a Blue Ray 24 frames per second at 48hz or 60hz. If it's set at 48, it's exactly twice the 24fps. However, lots of people notice a flicker in the picture that they don't care for.
If you set it at 60hz (the way we've been watching TV forever), then the TV has to employ a process called 2/3 pulldown. This eliminates the flicker.
(Full explanation here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecine#2:3_pulldown )
The V series can do both the 48 and the 60, but it can also do a 96hz setting. This allows a four times multiple of the 24fps, does not require any sort of processing and is supposed to look fine. (I haven't seen it personally).
An interesting note is that what is considered one of if not the best plasma TV made (Pioneer Kuro) uses a 72hz setting. Why Panasonic used 96 instead of 72 I don't know...
That plus a single sheet of glass plus an extra Picture mode are the three major differences between the G and V series.

As was I, briefly. The Samsung had more cons, and serious ones, at Cnet.
PNB650:
The bad: Somewhat expensive; glitch in 1080p/24 mode causes picture setting change; frame's red coloration not for everyone; no S-Video inputs.

The V10 was the best of all (this year), I would have gotten it but 50" was too large and they refused to make a V10 46". So I had to get a G15. BTW, this was for my Dad, I have a Kuro 5020 and if you have 2 grand you can still find one.
mattg0226 11-23-09, 01:17 PM I am newbie and I am buying my first hidef tv. After months of research I was convinced that the Panasonic 50” G series was the best tv my budget can afford. I went to the store and made all the setting adjustments and the G looked terrible but I know in store demo’s are not ideal and since the Kuru they had on display also looked bad I dismissed the in-store test and figured every review ever written can’t be wrong and I should still go with the G15. But what I saw in the store (thx setting) was a dull picture that had an antique look and was not impressive at all. After reading through the firmware thread it seems that my initial impression may have been correct and also there seems to be no consensus on whether new firmware updates have fixed this problem. Combined with the fact that I have an Onkyo receiver (handshake problem) and I likely wont have it pro-calibrated, this tv seems like an out of box nightmare and I am concerned that it may not be right tv for a newbie.
kriztoff 11-23-09, 02:06 PM Hi All,
Switching to size 1 does reduce artifacts (I was using THX mode for a while which locks you into size 2). My problem which was always there is this. It is with the 2 leftmost columns of pixels. The far left displays a purple colour or variation through almost the entire colour pallet except very dark colours which seem to display ok. Whenever blue or purple should be displayed the far left column displays a pick/purple and the column to the right displays white. I'm now in standard mode with size 1 picked. I've tried both component imputs to see if that is it, but so far no luck.
I would have linked a pic but don't have 3 posts yet :) . The picture would show a white (though narrow) band on the left side. It is quite distracting even though it is narrow. My eye is constantly drawn away from the center of the screen because of this.
Anyone notice this on their sets? Should I just call panasonic and get someone to come out and look at it? Thanks for your replys

First be sure you're watching true full HD content on a true HD channel. Or, HD DVD, either Blu-Ray or something that's 1080.
Then and only then you can go into the settings and change them. If you don't like THX you there's several others from which to choose (Standard, Vivid, Game, etc). Then there are the 4 I believe color temp settings, the typical picture adjustments, and more.

You also didn't mention which feed you were using at the store. I've noticed that poor feeds at the store make the panasonic look bad. I went to sears the other day to browse some TVs and my set looks much better than what's being displayed on their demo display.
The handshake fix is a non-issue as there is an official patch that you can request from panasonic. (if you even have an affected receiver)

Generationz 11-23-09, 09:54 PM Hello All!
My first time posting here, been lurking for awhile though doing tons of research.
So I finally decided to pull the gun on a 46g15 and I have a couple questions
1. When using a break in dvd/images is it better to display them through a high def source? or would a standard A/V input Dvd player work? or even a laptop connected through vga? Not trying to burn up my Xbox or PS3.
2. Which break in dvd/images would you use for this set? I've seen a couple floating around, but which one do you fellow g15 owners recommend?
3. "http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=16013999&postcount=1"
Can these settings be used with any break in dvds/images?
4. Lastly I was shooting for a 200 hour break in, overkill?
Thanks in advance guys!! This forum has crazy amounts of information and it is much appreciated!!

The only 5.1 passed via optical from the TV is broadcast. I believe this is a copyright or other issue with the Blu-Ray format. To pass 5.1 or other HD audio modes you will need to go directly from your player to your receiver.

1. Doesn't matter, as long as they are FULL screen.
2. Can't answer that, I've also asked them same thing here and never got a reply. :( For my Pioneer 5020 I used the USB drive method images at that link you posted.
3. Don't know that either, that's sort of also what I've been asking. I would think, "yes".
4. Not if you plan on doing a good amount of gaming (with static things on the screen) or 4:3 viewing with bars. If all you're ever going to do for the most part is full screen viewing and no (potentially harmful static areas) gaming, then the break-in process would essentially be only to "stress" the set to get more confidence in its potential lifespan.

A most interesting "quote", I'm not sure how one would accomplish that, LoL. ;) When you reply, just click the "Quote" button.
From what I understand, the only available firmware update when the set is connected online is v1.28 which is only for VieraCast. But it wouldn't hurt to get that update.
I want to get a 42" Panasonic plasma TV for my bedroom, and I'm trying to decide between the TC-P42G10 and the TC-P42G15. As far as I can tell, the only difference is that the latter is THX-certified. The price difference between the two sets at Amazon.com is not very much, so either TV is within my budget.
I'm looking for the experts on this board to give me some advice on which of the two sets to buy. Also, if there are any other places that I should check out for better prices, please let me know. I am aware that we are not supposed to discuss price on this forum, but I'm just looking for the name of a retailer to contact.
Thanks for your help and a Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.

Hi Mark
How did you manage to get the free BluRay player with the 42G15? I went to the HHGregg site but did not see anything to suggest that they would throw in a free BluRay Player! Maybe the deal has expired?
Thanks.

How did you manage to get the free BluRay player with the 42G15? I went to the HHGregg site but did not see anything to suggest that they would throw in a free BluRay Player! Maybe the deal has expired?
Thanks.
Cal68
The previous week hhgregg was throwing in a free panasonic BD player. It didn't take a whole lot to talk them down in price and get the LG player instead- I wanted netflix. Never pay the price you see at hhgregg, they don't mind haggling.
RandyWalters 11-24-09, 08:00 PM I want to get a 42" Panasonic plasma TV for my bedroom, and I'm trying to decide between the TC-P42G10 and the TC-P42G15. As far as I can tell, the only difference is that the latter is THX-certified. The price difference between the two sets at Amazon.com is not very much, so either TV is within my budget.
I'm looking for the experts on this board to give me some advice on which of the two sets to buy.The G15 is identical to the G10 except the G15's upper rear cover is about an inch thinner, and the G15 has a smaller silver accent below the screen. Aside from these two cosmetic differences they are the same TV with the same features and picture quality. Both have a THX mode. If you can't decide which one to get, flip a coin :D
Alex346z 11-24-09, 08:54 PM My 50G15 is supposed to be here tomorrow. Found it at us-appliance for $1200 with a free BD60 blueray player. I'll probably be posting up or searching the forums tomorrow finally to set it up.

Same deal and place I got mine from last month. TV and player arrived in fine shape and the setup posts here helped immensely to get it adjusted the way I wanted it.
laharmony 11-24-09, 11:19 PM Bought the 46" G10 about 3 weeks ago in an emergency move when our rear DLP went belly up. Really wanted the G15, but couldn't find any in local stock. It seems that particular model is sold specifically through the mega TV dealers such as Paul's and Ken Crane in this area. Not the Best Buys or Magnolias...
I heard initially that the G15 had the 96Hz refresh rate as an option for watching 24p material and that the 24p standard mode on the G10 was unwatchable. The only way around was to go 60Hz with the added pull-down (3:2). Now I'm not so sure the G15 has that option either, from what I've been reading. Any clarification on that? I don't have the Oppo blu-ray player in my hands yet, so the only 1080 material I've watched so far was from DirecTV. It looked fine, but I'm not 100% sure I was looking at true 24p.
Anyway, the picture is great. The sound stinks. I can always fire up the home theater, but that's a little overkill when the wife is watching morning TV. One nice thing about the Sammy DLP is that it had decent sound...
drfreeman60 11-24-09, 11:22 PM G15 has identical 24p processing as G10 (48hz/24p & 60hz with 3:2 pulldown).

If the two are pretty much the same, then I'll go for the cheaper G10 and use the $$ to pick up a BluRay disc or two! Thanks for the advice.

Can anyone please send me a link, where I can check my set up and connections using my Panasonic 46 G15 to an Onkyo 906 and Dvd player..?
For instance, can I use the Hdmi lead to direct sound into my Onkyo or do I have to stick with an optical cable?...there does not seem to be an hdmi out on the Panasonic?..
Thanks for any help...

Your HDMI will pass both audio and video to your AV Receiver. Audio quality is identical to an optical and will run all the decoding properties your receiver can handle.
yes hh gregg will haggle ...i just got them to match panasonics ups employee price....after a 2 year search i am loving my 50g15. i plan to make a post about my tv hunting experience.
and im watching sunshine on bd right now and i finally see what all the raving over this movie was for
Was originally looking for a Panasonic TC-P50G10 but have migrated to a
Panasonic TC-P50G15. From everything I have read, they are the same correct? The G15 is just thinner. Sorry, I just wanted to confirm.
Anyone running a "Black Friday" deal on one?
Bill Stewart 11-27-09, 12:58 AM Just received my 50G15 tonight, works fine with my Verizon Fios cable box going into HDMI 1. Refuse to handshake with my Gefen 4x1 HDMI switch going into HDMI 2.
Xbox 360 will work directly connected to HDMI3, but PS3 won't???
Any ideas? I upgrade the G15 firmware as soon as I turned it on.
Did you force the PS3 to handshake with your new set?
Turn the power off on the PS3 (with the switch in the back), connect hdmi, turn PS3 switch back on, hold down the touch sensitive power on the front of the console until you hear 2 beeps, and finally follow on screen set up prompts.
PS3's can be very fussy when going from one tv to another and this can sometimes be a must.

Well i didnt care at the moment because you have to be like 1 inch to the screed to notice that. Today when i woke up i saw ANOTHER pixel like that that wasnt there yesterday!
What is the cause of this? And do the pixels go normal or is the "damage" permanent?

They are the same, I went with G15 solely because of the price I could get on it localy plus free extended warranty otherwise I'd be a G10 owner. I should say the G15 is only thinner at the top, once you get to the part where all the boards and connectors are it's the same width. I guess since I have it on the stand that comes with it right now it does give the illusion that it's a thinner TV which is nice but when I wall mount it I know it'll be the same distance from the wall as if I'd put a G10 up there.

Hi, I had the same issue, the G15 doesn't pass 5.1 thru the optical out.
of the set because of the digital copyrights encryption, I had to buy a
optical switcher and it works fine. http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=180-980 , copy/search the site.
My receiver has only 1 opti. and 1 coax input, so this worked fine.

I always liked that store and they're a local business for me. Or you could check out monoprice.com. They're an AVS sponsor (look at the top of this page). They also have awesome prices. Check out their optical switch: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10423&cs_id=1042302&p_id=2946&seq=1&format=2
I've had good luck with their toslink, hdmi and microphone cables. Their wall mounts are nice and very reasonably priced.

I just got the G15 last week so it's not that old but i'm afraid to watch 2.40:1 or similar movies because of the black bars. i'm afraid of burn-ins....

reticentwookiee 11-29-09, 01:15 AM Internet connectivity question for you guys. I recently purchased a 50G15 and i am yet to take delivery since it was out of stock.
Can anyone tell me if the port at the back is a standard 10/100 ethernet port? I am planning on using a Gig-E N router that i would like to connect the G15 to. This is so i can connect my other devices (BD player. media device etc.) to the router as well. I plan on using this router in wireless client mode to hook up with another linksys router that is upstairs connected to my cable modem.
Would the above method be better or worse than using a wireless bridge from the G15 to my N network?
Thanks.

Make sure the bars are gray and not black. I believe there's a setting in the regular menu area to make them black or gray. They are gray on mine so I haven't had to change it. Once the set has about ~200 hrs on it you can set them to black if you want, as long as most of your viewing is HD content.

I've been wondering if it's a standard NIC or LAN like on a PC's mobo (or PCI card). But I hooked mine up to my router and updated the firmware that way with no problem.
pont2000 11-29-09, 10:57 AM Just got a 46" G15, using THX mode out of the box without any changes, and on a full HD show, using the "full" setting, it leaves small black bars around the entire screen just over half an inch wide. I checked the same program using my 46 85 series from last year, and the entire panel is used. I tried changing settings from 1 to 2 and it doesn't make any difference. Interesting part is, on the G15, although the entire panel is not used, the actual picture measured 46" on the diagonal. Is this normal on the G15 series. I checked on the Panasonic website and all I could find to adjust zoom, which I am not now able to access since it is grayed out, it stated to use "S" video to enable the zoom measure - it did not work. so I put my HDMI cable back on. To sum up I have 2 questions and looking for your help:
1. Are the bars normal
2. How do I access the "zoom" menu.
Thanks in advance.
mariachi 11-29-09, 11:32 AM I think the black bars are normal as the frame surrounding the tv is thinner. This is one of the things that I don't like too much of the G10/15 series.

So this is a more like a standard 10/100 port? I could not find this in the online manual.

Different stores have different policies on how many pixels must be out to make an exchange (6-8 from what I have seen). Good luck. Let us know what you do if anything.
Clint S. 11-29-09, 10:54 PM So this is a more like a standard 10/100 port? I could not find this in the online manual.
"More like a standard 10/100 port", as compared to what? Apparently if not the same, it's similar enough to a typical NIC/LAN since it can connected to a broadband modem or router. It may not be "10/100", maybe just "10/nothing" or maybe 1/nothing because it's apparently slow. :D But seriously, that shouldn't matter because few have net speeds of 10mb/sec. It seems to take a while to d'load the firmware, so unless the FW is several MB's in size, the interface is slow.
this picture quality on this set is amazing - but as others have mentioned, the sound is pretty terrible and flat sounding.
i've managed to hook up two additional speakers in the room using the audio out on the back of the television set, but when i hit mute or adjust the volume, the speakers don't respond (it only affects the built-in speakers). is there any setting to change this??
thanks

THX mode locks you into size 2 with no overscan. Many sources don't completely fill the screen, edge to edge, top to bottom, when using THX. As far as I know, there's no way to adjust it other than using a different picture mode where you can use size 1.

The audio out on all Panasonics is fixed output only. No volume or mute control. You need either speakers with their own volume and mute controls or to run things through an A/V amp or receiver, then turn off the internal speakers. This requires that you use the remote for the audio device usually instead of the TV remote.
My solution was an inexpensive but nice sounding Soundbar from first Yamaha, now Vizio and a logitech Harmony remote.
The 50 inch G15 seems to be getting hard to find; US Appliance is out and doesn't expect any more.

I dont know if its b/c im straining looking for something wrong. or is it really doing it. it did not do it at all until yesterday and i watched alot of tv friday and saturday and all day sunday...the headache came late last night.

im 12 feet away and it using a ps3, and att uverse. and using tweaktv settings in thx . and i love the tv im watching espn hd football right now and the picture is beautiful,i had a headache before i started watching and its not going away or getting worst ...i hope its not the tv.
i searched and i am going to lowes to try and rig up some bias lighting to see if it improves until i can order the bio-lume, also going to run the avia disk to see if i can get an improvement.i have read that this goes away after you get used to the tv/the phospor decay gets less as the tv breaks in ...and even dont want to believe this..it makes sense since i did not have this issue on some older plasmas

I searched the Plasma forum for posts and used the search string: +robot+voice and found a few threads....it seems to happen sometimes if they had Bass Boost turned on. On the Panny's i set up for friends/relatives/customers/neighbors etc i always turn off the Bass Boost and Surround Sound functions if they're going to be using the TV's speakers.

All that still answered your question. ;) It doesn't matter if one or other other is 10, 10/100, 100/1000 or 10/100/1000.
Mr_Bravia 12-04-09, 01:49 PM Hey all
I’m in the market for my first Plasma and I have heard wonderful reviews on both the G15 and the V10 models. I am really annoyed though that the UK models, unlike the American models, get no advanced picture options to tweak with and get the set as good as it can be.The G15 in the uk doesnt hava a THX preset and I know the V10 has a THX mode preset ready to go which is suppost to be very good, but the TV is about 300 pounds more expensive in the UK at the moment. Am I better off buying a G15 and getting it calibrated professionally for about 200 pounds, or go for the V10 which I cannot tweak extensively, and use the THX pre set for everything? I mean I play games alot on PS3 and XBOX360 and imp sure the THX mode would not look great for a lot that as it is calibrated around the idea of watching movies, hence trying to get it close to D65 standards. If anyone in the UK has owned any of these models or has any information in regards to what I should do can you please give me some advice and I know I definitely want to get one of these pannys. Oh the dilemma! It’s annoying that Panasonic take these additional grey scale alteration advanced settings away from the UK models which has been mentioned in a lot of reviews
Anyway thanks in advance for any replies and I look forward to hearing from you all.

You should probably head to avforums.com which is basically a UK version of this site. They would probably know more about the specifics of the UK models than we would.
Wow! That's a whole bunch of dead pixels if that photo is accurate. I'd definitely get it exchanged.
Since Cult is new, he couldn't post the actual link. For anyone that didn't figure it out, here's the actual link:
