View Full Version : What lens is this?
Question: What lens is this? They are on my Runco DTV-1100 (Barco 1209s) that was mfg'd in Dec 99. Not that it matters much, I just wondered what quality of lens I had here? There are absolutely no markings on them at all.
Thanks,
Tom

I believe that the 1100 and 1200 came standard (..whatever standard means...they could be any of the variations mentioned!) with the HFQ900 lenses.
..are they the plastic housing ones?
HD120s and HD10 are also common on these sets.
see if you can figure out more about what they are made of and what their characteristics are...that might make it easier for us to identify them
...if these have the plastic front barrels then most likely are the 900s...if not then something else

Martin,
Thanks for the reply. My G70 has all plastic construction lenses, they seem cheaply built for an ~ $20k new machine. These things are all aluminum, they exude quality (a multitude of steps in quality construction over the G70's lenses). Honestly, I CANNOT believe how nice these things are. As an engineer by trade, I love precision made products; I am enamored by the quality of the build of these lenses. Extremely nice, that's all I can say.

nashou66 06-14-09, 12:31 AM the HFQ900 had a plastic front housing and are the best of the HD10 series lenses, your are most likley the HD10F's or straght HD10's

Its funny, we *assume* the lenses which look the best are the best, but in fact, the ones made with plastic elements and composite housings are less prone to oddities caused by temperature fluctuation. The original HD8 for instance, is a far inferior lens to the all plastic and composite housing HD8-RevB...

jkruger 06-17-09, 10:33 AM I too have a Runco 1100 with the same manufacture date. 12/99 The lenses on mine are the HD-10 GT17's.

the gt17s are nice lenses but they don't do too well on smaller screens. (...and by smaller i mean less than a 100")
It is true that you should pay no attention to the construction of the lenses...after all plastic can hold it together as well a aluminum can!
If you do have the HQ lenses and have a smaller than 100" screen you might wanna look into trading them for some hd10ls...they are perfect for that size and the uniformity/corners look great with them.
Tom, have you identified your lenses yet?
If not give us some more info and we might be able to do "remotely"! LOL
Good luck
Martin
From using HD10L's, they will only focus on screens about 71" maximum width, anything beyond that and you'll end up with an area the shape of a ring(cut off at the top and bottom of the screen) that you won't be able to focus, no matter what....Really, they are optimized for very small screens, don't let commercial re-sellers fool you into thinking the 10L's are "ok" for bigger screens, they simply aren't...

Martin,
Actually I have not ID'd these lenses, but I will look at them a bit closer and give further pics if I find any markings on them. These things were (I think) were absolutely free of any markings.
I will say this, I've got a 110" (16:9) Stewart Micro-Perf screen that I'm going to use this PJ (1209s - DTV-1100) with but I've yet to get a signal to it to date. I'm not in a huge hurry to do this, but hoping to get this done by the end of the month. Really need to get my HT construction started. Right now I've been content to just watch the G70 in a temporary setup in the basement. I think the wife would appreciate a dedicated room to contain some of the sound...I would prefer that too... :D

Wierd, My testing and many others is totally different to what you mention.
We did not "assume" the better looking was better.
The plastic HD8 moves more with temp change and is LESS STABLE, leading to MORE conv. drift with temp change.
There was a HD8 Rev B that was still ALL ALI case, I have one still.....
ALSO I believe that the early HFQ900 were also all ali case, I dont have any of those left, SO cant prove that one!

Hi Tom,
Set the PJ at the distance from screen, You ONLY need to check the focus ability on the Green.
Swop ALL lenses onto the green to check, Sadly there are some CRT sellers that are making up sets of lenses with what ever they have !!! You need to make sure all three are the same.
Some (but very rare) were designed for a curved screen, again several types.
HD10L is good for about 4-6 foot wide screen.
HD120 (GT17) for about 6 - 10 foot wide screen.
HD10 & HFQ900 are good for 6 - 20+ foot wide screens
This means checking for HD10L or HD120 can be done with ease, but the HFQ900 / HD10 is a little more tricky......
If I had to guess and these are the ORIGINAL lens to that PJ then I would go with HD120.........
I think the shape of the rear element changes with the lens type, Not sure how easy it is to measure this or how accurate.........
Andy.

(Hello Mad....how are you these days?)
I think that I would have to agree with Andy...those look like HD120s. (...but it has been a while since I have seen one in person and my memory could be playing tricks on how they looked like to me back then!)
It is emparative for you to make sure that you have a matched set of lenses!
Some sellers are "scandalous" (...for lack of a better word! LOL:) )
Good luck with your setup.
...I sounds like you have everything under control and will be enjoying it soon enough!
