Majoram 01-04-11, 12:06 AM hello,
I have one of the original first-run Xtreamers and I keep having an odd problem.
Everytime I try to update the firmware beyond v2.1.3 I get some problems:
- flashing black horizontal lines while playing video and also on any of the Xtreamer menu or config screens
- Skipping / missing scenes during playback
- Video plays completely ok and then stops at some point and starts playing a new file.
All video is played from a USB connected hard drive.
Sound/video is through HDMI.
I usually have my settings to HDMI Auto and 1080p 24Hz enabled.
I have tried firmware versions 2.2, 2.3.* and the latest 2.5.4.
Any help would be appreciated.
A usual tip to solve a lot of problems is installing the emergency firmware, reset the device, leave it plugged out for some minutes and then try to install the newest firmware. If you know someone who has an Xtreamer as well, I suggest you to bring your HDD and try those files. Or maybe even better ask him (or her) to bring the Xtreamer - then you can sort out whether it maybe has anything to do with your setup at home. Good luck!
By the way: On the official Xtreamer forum there's a vote for the best design suggestion running. I have designed a suggestion myself, because I really want a powerful mediaplayer with a nice integrated display - but take a look for yourself and decide for the design you like the most: http://forum.xtreamer.net/topic/19785-xtreamer-design-competition-vote/

Best regards,

buddy4711 01-26-11, 04:56 AM I have set the Xtreamer via HDMI to my A/V-receiver (Anthem Statement D2) and from here to the TV, both capable of 1080p. But by some problem with correct EDID-Data transformation I could so far only output 480p, 720p and 1080i resolutions, all other res and especially 1080p are visible but "greyed out" and not selectable.
Maybe interesting for someone else. I have solved the problem of the video resolutions between D2 and Xtreamer by connecting in between a Gefen HDMI Detective device, which gives a preselected EDID to the Media Box (Xtreamer) and thus let me choose 540p, 720p, 1080i50Hz, 1080p50Hz.

that is exatly the thing. I set it on one of the manual modes (I think it is # 4 with Dip switches accordingly) and it just works perfect.
Man....the picture is so much better when playing a 1080p source file from Xtreamer output on 1080p to Receiver and to display.
Without it was converting the 1080p source into 1080 interlaced and the receiver upscaled again to 1080 progressive for display of 1080p. Doesn't really make much sense...
BTW, I do NOT channel the audio signal via HDMI through this thing, but instead I am using an optical SPDIF cable between Xtreamer and A/V-receiver. I tried first with HDMI through the GEFEN Detective but it gave me only PCM signals. with the optical it is fine, DTS and DD 6 channels.
One more word: I think it is pretty stupid from Xtreamer engineers (or whoever is responsible) to rely on the correct EDID information from displays/TV. In fact I made a test with connecting my TV (which is a full HD Plasma Pioneer Kuro) directly to the Xtreamer and result was that all output resolutions are available in the Xtreamer. But since I connect the Xtreamer to the receiver this does not work anymore (without the Gefen I mean). It is not a malfunction of the Receiver (which is a $$$$ Anthem Statement D2) not giving correct EDID information to the Xtreamer. But as at other sites were mentioned it seems to be a bit more complex to repeat the EDID from a display to the source through a receiver than just directly between display and Xtreamer.
Why not making a user friendly selection option for the user to to choose manually the desired output resolution (e.g. matching the source files' native resolution). Why is user forced to put additional and costly hardware into the equation? ---> the Gefen cost around the same as the Xtreamer.....really stupid!!!

And don't leave any room for adjustment.
It is hoped that the new Realtek SDK will offer more flexible HDMI video output options. Including a revised A/V set-up GUI.

Not sure they have any extra chip, might be a typo as usual.
Any way, hopefully it would be well below $250 range in NA, because thats what it costs to get a small form factor box with similar specs (from Shuttle, ACER, Jetway, ZBOX).
Case looks nice :)
Update: apparently the price will be 200 Euros ($270 USD) + shipping, so we are talking about around $300 shipped to NA, not sure if they would able to compete here at that price.

From what I understand it's the audio chip that will allow HD bitstreaming, the ACL892.
$270 is about what we'd pay here for a similar nettop & 4GB DDR3 RAM. What sets the Xtreamer Ultra apart from most of the others imho is the included IR and remote control.

Pardon my ignorance but just what is this thing? I assume it's a small form factor computer but is it also a media player? Will it play my BD ISO files?

Yes, it is essentially a nettop designed to be an HTPC primarily (though you can do virtually anything with it that a regular PC can do). It will play whatever XBMC will play.

I still like my Xtreamer but I have to admit I felt a little buyer's remorse being an early owner for reasons I won't get into here. This "Ultra" looks really cool but I'm going to have to wait this time for proof of features and functionality. All I have ever wanted is a box that can stream my BD ISO's from my Windows Home Server without stutter, retaining HD audio, no video processing (i.e. colorspace conversion, scaling, etc.). It doesn't seem like too much to ask and there are many players out there that do one or a few these things very well but I have yet to find one that does them all very well. My Dune Base 3.0 is the best I have found but the Sigma chip converts colorspace from 4:4:2 to 4:4:4 which results in a slightly inferior picture compared to my Oppo Blu Ray player. I'm just tired of being a paying beta tester of media players so something is really going to have to impress me before I fork over more money.
aasoror 02-17-11, 11:32 PM From what I understand it's the audio chip that will allow HD bitstreaming, the ACL892.
Though I can't find the chip specs from Realtek (latest one there is the ALC889 (http://218.210.127.131/products/productsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=28&Level=5&Conn=4)), that said, it doesn't make a difference, the realtek chipset is responsible for analogue stereo and digital SPDIF (optical/coax) neither of these have enough bandwidth to carry lossless HD-Audio (namely Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio), the one and only way currently to send these digital signals is via HDMI, and here comes the problem, the ION2 chipset isn't capable of sending lossless HD-Audio via HDMI, you can still send 7.1 LPCM but you need to re-encode for that to work.
That said, some can find difference between lossy and lossless audio, some can not, some might never be willing to spend the money for proper setup even if there is a difference, so I don't really think its a deal breaker. Yet, specs wise, no ION2 based box is HD-Audio bitstreaming capable or will it ever be.

This has always been the problem with Xtreamer in NA, they don't have enough retailing channels (if at all) to enable them to offer real competitive deals (i.e. sales), true $270 is about what we pay for equivialnt hardware everyday, yet who pays retail when it comes to computer gadgets (or anything if that matters).
Example ? the Jetway (D525, which also comes with IR and MCE remote) everyday price $270 indeed, yet every several weeks sale price is $200, same goes for the ZBOX nettop and most of the others brands.
I don't think Xtreamer folks intend to top something like XMBC, as a matter of fact they are advertising the Xtreamer Ultra as an XMBC capable machine, so if at the end of the day all the boxes (regardless of brand) would be running XMBC, and similar nettops are readily available in NA for $270 (or less if you are willing to wait for the bimonthly sale) then Xtreamer need to do much better than $300 if they want to have a "real" chance in NA markets. A MCE capable remote+ receiver is around $20 any way :)
Just my 2 cents ..

From what I have read the ALC892 does in fact support bitstreaming of HD Audio. My concern though is that it has never been implemented before. There are motherboards that use the ALC892 yet don't have HD Audio capabilities, and most likely due to proper drivers not being available from Realtek. If somehow Xtreamer was able to work with realtek to get the proper drivers that is great, but being the first isn't necessarily a good thing when it comes t o stability/bugs...

Thanks dbone1026 for the info, it would be great if you can share resource links.
That said, how is this bitstream going to be passed ? via optical toslink (from the picture) ? whats the point in passing it via an interface incompatible with every single device out there ? so even if its (practically) possible to send high def audio bitstream optical output, where are you going send it when every single implemented tsolink port on every single A/V receiver ever been built is incapable of decoding that bitstream ?!

Finding info on the ALC892 is difficult to come by, I found a few different posts (such as this one (http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=854665)) scattered around and Xtreamer USA (Xtreamer reseller) mentioned as well in point #4 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=20020424&postcount=15)
FYI - you cannot bitstream via tsolink, it can only be done via HDMI

Exactly .. the audio (Realtek) chipset on ION/ION2 reference design has nothing to do with HDMI (which is controlled by the nvidia hardware).
This is what I am saying the whole time, claiming that the box can bitstream HD-Audio because of the RT chipset "might" be able to is a moot point unless they re-design the whole ION2 platform which is next to blasphemy :)
I would take all the "hearsay" about the RT chipset with a grain of salt, so far every one is reporting what others have been reporting without a single solid reference (not even from Realtek own tech documents).

Yeah, very simply put IMO until some reviewers come out and confirm that it can in fact bitstream HD Audio as far as I am concerned this is just vaporware. There are motherboards that have that audio realtek chipset and they cannot bitstream HD Audio without the support of the proper GPU (which as we mentioned the ION2 is not capable of). But hey, Xtreamer has gone on the record as saying they can bitstream HD Audio from the Ultra, so I guess we will know what is up their sleeve in the next few weeks.

No, it's an Atom-based box using the ION2. The price is about USD$275, maybe more if the American dollar continues to lose its value.

The talk about Realtek revolves around the audio, not the chipset (which is Intel Atom). The realtek audio chip is supposedly what will be responsible for bitstreaming HD Audio

Agreed! There is a huge effort to impress. Well, it might be. I have asked two questions- whether or not it’s HDCP and DLNA certified, still waiting for answer, if ever. Other issue is web-browser. There is no full web browser as you have it on your PC. User Manual looks good, but apec is unclear about codecs & containers. The world is moving ahead to fully realize silky, 1080p/60fps on your HDTV. Panasonic, Sony, Canon newer, non AVCHD format 1080p@60fps is here. It is not clear if it is capable of playing 1080p@60fps recorded at 24-28Mbsec. Will it upscale 720p? Regardless, I have to admit that some one finally have realized what people are looking for. Hope for better.

We hope we can finish the new version 3 for a first beta release within 6 weeks . It may be little longer or little before. when dealing with development of SoC it is hard to estimate exactly. We will not release the new version officialy before we will be convinced it is good enough and stable. Please be patient.

Xtreamer USA 04-22-11, 11:14 PM Xtreamer 2.7 Firmware here (http://forum.xtreamer.net/topic/21897-xtreamer-27-official-release/)
This was released about 1 week ago. I didn't link it here, because I didn't think there was much to see (it seemed to be just an update to support Facebook integration (which may not be of interest to a lot of people)).
The reason for linking it now though, is that, running 2.7 firmware, I tested some files that were previously giving stuttering / dropouts with HD audio, and they played smooth as silk!:)
I am not really sure if there were any changes, made in this firmware in regards to HD audio, since a full change log was not really published.
But hey, if you were having any of those issues on a previous firmware, give the new 2.7 twirl and see if it makes a difference for you. (And post the results).
Bottom Line: Now that HD audio works perfectly (at least on my setup), that is a big "value-added" factor, that makes a relatively inexpensive unit like the Xtreamer SideWinder an even greater bang for the buck--not too shabby!
Sure Xtreamer gets a lot of bashing here, but the firmware seems to be definitely heading in the right direction . . .

En Sabur Nur 05-14-11, 09:29 PM I'm eager to see how the update turns out, especially for tv series, with the XTPro, which I own. I can compare theirs with My Movies 4 and see which one I like best. new_xtreamer 05-14-11, 11:55 PM Hi guys- I bought and installed Xtreamer Sinewinder media player this week. I tried several BD m2ts files including Avatar. The PQ/AQ is superb. The movies I played have DTS-HD audio codec. I encountered 4 audio dropouts on Avatar. I stopped and resumed the movie each time, and the audio worked perfectly fine after each resumed. I installed the latest firmware 2.7, but the audio dropouts remain the same.
Are there any settings or firmware to resolve it? Thanks.

I think there is still a problem with DTS-MA and M2TS container. According to post from ))(( Xtreamer ))(( (chief software guy) here (http://forum.xtreamer.net/topic/20326-issues-passing-full-hd-audio-via-hdmi-to-dss-amplifier/), it is something that will be resolved in Firmware 3.0.
I have watched that same movie with DTS-MA in MKV container, and it played flawless (since 2.7 firmware). Also played Dolby True-HD from M2TS with the same results. So the problem seems to be with regards to DTS-MA in M2TS container.
If that is really the case, then you will have to wait on firmware 3.0 to fix the problem . . .

The only information I have is from the "Status Update (http://forum.xtreamer.net/topic/21867-firmware-version-3-for-xtreamer-products-status-update/)" (linked in a post above) that was posted about 1 month ago, which estimated 6 weeks--so that puts it about two weeks away.
I know beta testers are already testing it, and have been for sometime now. I am guessing they are still tweaking and bug-fixing before it is released . . .
From all the little previews I have seen online, it seems to be a major overhaul / update. So I am just as anxious as everyone else for the release! :)

Really want to see the jukebox integration, especially for TV Shows. I set up my sis/bro in law with the Pro for their kids and a jukebox would definitely improve the experience.
While I am bugging you with questions, any status on the Prodigy?

About the Prodigy: it's slated for 1st week of June. But we all know how these things go--realistically, we might not see the Prodigy until mid -> end June. Please don't quote me on this-this is not an informed status update--just a guess, based on how previous product launches have gone!

It must be some minor bugs in the 2.7 firmware. I hope that the new firmware 3.0 will get rid of it completely. Otherwise, this $140 investment is worth it. The PQ/AQ is superb. I owned several other HD media players previously, and the Sidewinder out shined all of them. I preferred a player with proper audio codec, especially HD audio codec. I can live with less than perfect PQ, but Sidewinder can do both very well. I'm really enjoying the HD AQ throughout my 5.1 surround sound speakers with 2 front height speakers. I can finally hear the sound affects from all speakers very clearly and the subwoofer is rocking too.
I'm glad that Xtreamer is working on solution and add new options. I understand that it doesn't have all the internet streaming contents as other players, but I have PS3 for that. I read somewhere that it is planning to include Netflix too. I hope that they include in the 3.0.
Once again, thanks.
Ok! :)
About the Prodigy: it's slated for 1st week of June. But we all know how these things go--realistically, we might not see the Prodigy until mid -> end June. Please don't quote me on this-this is not an informed status update--just a guess, based on how previous product launches have gone!

So right now, can't answer this question directly . . . Will the new firmware 3.0 include Netflix streaming? Since I have PS3 to do all the internet streaming, it is not that big of a deal but it's good option to have on Xtream Sidewinder.

On the Xtreamer Pro for Netflix it says "Comming soon..." (I did not spell incorrect). I have yet to see that specific Realtek chip get certified by Netflix so I would be skeptical until officially announced

So far, I can play every BD movie with HD audio using m2ts and ISO files flawless with the 2.7 firmware. I'm sure there are still some minor bugs in it. I hope that the 3.0 will get rid all of it and include more features (Netflix) too.
Coming from a troublesome Boxee Box (HD audio dropouts, DD 2.0 is now DD 5.1, red screen, etc), I'm glad that I got the Xtreamer Sidewinder. It's good feeling to enjoy the movie without having to put up with all the issues. Shrek Forever HD PQ/AQ is superb on the Sidewinder! :)

Netflix is based on whether or not Netflix will certify Realtek (an in particular the Realtek chip being uses in the Pro/SideWinder). I would take the fact that the Pro lists Netflix with a grain of salt, nothing more then a marketing gimmick.
The Sidewinder makes a great portable jukebox, can't beat the size
new04quest 05-16-11, 09:52 AM The Sidewinder makes a great portable jukebox, can't beat the size Yes, I noticed there is a slot for HDD and there is HDD option in the media library. I'm wondering what HDD will it take. I saw this Western Digital 2 TB (http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Intellipower-Desktop-WD20EARS/dp/B002ZCXK0I/ref=pd_bxgy_e_img_c) as an option in Amazon. Will it fit in the Xtreamer Sidewinder HDD slot?
If the WD 2TB fit in the slot, I'll not have to use the external USB drive anymore. It'll be easier to move the player around without extra accessories.

The sidewinder only accepts 2.5in HDDs (2TB drives right now are 3.5in). I have a 500GB 2.5in laptop drive in mine

Since AQ is my first priority, I'm too eager to watch BD to verify HD audio over the weekend. I'm satisfied with AQ/PS so far, and it is time to explore the hardware and other options.
I was hoping that it is the 3.5" HDD, because it is cheaper than the 2.5" HDD.
I found these two HDDs-

I would rather go with a 5400RPM drive versus a 7200RPM drive due to the tight space (heat).

Currently, the maximum capacity 2.5" HDD not exceeding 9.5mm thick is 750GB. Such as the WD7500BPVT (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=140#tab3). Any capacity larger than that and they're 12.5mm thick and wont fit inside the Xtreamer SideWinder.
Cheers

CheersThanks. I'm at my work office now, and I don't have information on the Sidewinder sata HDD slot. I'm assuming that it is a plug/play type of sata HDD slot. I noticed the cap on the top of the player. Is that the location of the sata HDD slot?
I might have to settle for the WD7500BPVT (http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Scorpio-Notebook-WD7500BPVT/dp/B003D18DM0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1305566655&sr=1-1). I was hoping to fit something with larger storage.

If storage was a priority you should have opted for the Xtreamer Pro (can handle 2 3.5in hard drives). I set up my sis/bro in law with one using a 2TB and 1TB drive (so 3TB total worth of space). Although the Pro is obviously bigger then the Sidewinder it is by no means big.

I run an XtreamerPro with the same HDD configuration. I leave mine on 24/7 as it makes a pretty good files server too ;)

The Xtreamer pro is probably a very good player to have, but I'm trying to keep the price down. I preferred the fanless player (less noise) and I'm lack of room in my entertainment center too. I think that 750GB for internal drive is fine for now. It'll allow me to move the Sidewinder around the house and take it along to vacation easier. I’m planning to buy the new Honda Odyssey. The player with internal hard drive is a plus. It’ll be able to play on the new Odyssey via HDMI. I do have 2 other 1TB USB powered external drives.

I hope that the Western Digital 750 GB Scorpio Blue (http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Scorpio-Notebook-WD7500BPVT/dp/B003D18DM0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1305566655&sr=1-1) will fit and work in the Xtreamer Sidewinder sata HDD slot. I found this HDD Installation instruction (http://shop.xtreamer.net/Support/questions/878/HDD+Installation) on Xtreamer website, and it supports up to 500GB 2.5" hard drives only. Have you try the 750GB hard drive in your Xtreamer Sidewinder?

It's not true... as a 1TB HDD won't fit!If the slot is limit to 9.5mm, I would not think that the bigger 1TB HDD will fit either. I asked the seller at Amazon, and their replied was (of course, the Sidewinder included pre-installed 1TB). I thought that it was weird.
I'll order the 750GB WD this week. Thank you for the info.
new_xtreamer 05-19-11, 11:34 PM I'm not a big fan of Harry Potter, but my wife and kids love it. I tried the latest "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Pt I" with ISO file on the Sidewinder earlier. The HD PQ&AQ are superb. There were 2 audio dropouts for the entire movie. I hope that the new firmware 3.0 can fix all audio dropout issues.

Yeah, I noticed dropped HD Audio on Harry Potter as well (the previous Harry Potter). Also, same dropouts with Back to the future. This happened with the XT Pro which should produce the same results as the Sidewinder
