So I ordered my WD TV from Amazon last week and it's supposed to arrive today. I don't have time right now to scour through the hundreds of pages of posts on the WD TV on this forum, so I'm just wondering if there are any "must do"s in order to get started (i.e. ensure certain firmware upgrades, disable/enable certain settings, etc). I'm not sure how "plug-and-play" this device is.

I was planning to set this up w/ the video going to my Panasonic TC-P50S1 via HDMI 1.3a (monoprice.com) and sending the audio to my old Sony Dream System receiver via digital optical out (planning to upgrade to a Sony CT100 soundbar eventually, but haven't gotten around to it yet, so this is an interim solution).

The files I'll plan to view are primarily downloaded 720p/1080p mkvs and Xvid/DIVX avis.

I have the same setup as you will.

My WD TV is plugged into my Sony CT100 via HDMI, then a HDMI cable from the CT100 to my TCP50S1. Plays DTS and AC3 files perfectly.

They only settings I have changed: upgrade to the latest firmware and changed display settings to 1080p 60hz.

Its pretty much plug and play. Let us know if you have any questions.
