View Full Version : WDTV Does Not Recognize Entire VOB File
mfc90125 06-17-09, 01:46 AM Greetings,
I recently purchased the unit and upgraded the firmware as per this site's recommendation. I am using DVD Decrypter to rip the main movie into a VOB file. However, WDTV does not recognize the entire file, and instead displays that the film is only 24 minutes or 1 hr 4 mins, etc. The only way I can get WDTV to recognize the entire movie is to rip it as multi-VOB files and then make a folder on my Passport drive labeled with that movie. I can use DVDFab 6 to make multi-VOB files but I would much rather have the movie as one total file. My Passport drive was formatted as NTFS so that should not be a problem.
Anyone have a thought as to this one? I am open to using a new rip program, provided that it's free.
Thanks for your help in advance.
Why do you care that it is multiple files in a folder, as opposed to a single file? If you want a single file, are you opposed to killing two birds with one stone, and encoding them into smaller .avi's?
mfc90125 06-17-09, 02:24 AM I'm worried about multiple files because WDTV won't allow you to create a playlist. Instead, once the large VOB file is finished, it simply returns you to the main menu. I would prefer one large file because it's also easier to manage.
mytbyte 06-17-09, 02:45 AM Most reports say that a single .vob should work...this is a first...
sinker442 06-17-09, 05:22 AM Single vob did not work for me either.
Rip as multiple .vob and when you want to play the movie press PLAY on the first vob, NOT enter (if you press play it will play them all without interruptions, if you press enter only the first file)...
mfc90125 06-17-09, 10:18 AM Sinker, thanks for that tip - I will check it out. It's interesting that something like VLC Media Player will display the entire movie, yet WDTV not only shows an incorrect time for the file. In all the demonstrations I've seen for the unit, users are dumping one large file onto their externals and it's properly displaying the movie. Like mytbyte said, this is a first!
If you want you can try to remux the vob audio and video streams into an mkv, maybe thatll help :)
put your ripped dvd in VIDEO_TS.
Keep DVD structure and all will work fine. (directory name >>> audio_ts and video_ts (with all .vob in it etc ...))
To see if it's working, just read the displayed elapsed time at start or use info key.

That will work. Demux the vob to separate video and audio streams, then mux them back together as an mpg. This also works with the PS3.
mfc90125 06-17-09, 09:40 PM Sinker, I tried your suggestion to press PLAY rather than ENTER, but the system flashes an error message (red circle with a line through it). Waxou, I've been ripping files as VOB since the beginning, which is where I initally ran into the problem. I did check my DVD Decrypter and I have the REMOVE STRUCTURE PROTECTION button unchecked.
I have the videos with mutliple VOB files in a subfolder, with the name of the movie typed exactly as the VOB files iside - for example, "The Dark Knight (Part 1).vob"). Also, I have a JPG for each file typed in the same format - "The Dark Knight (Part 1).jpg". Hope that helps clarify things.
