what is the best option to view my movies in other rooms, apple tv or a device like popcorn hour?

What type of movies (i.e what format)? AppleTV is greatly limited in the type of movies that can be streamed (unless you do the boxee hack). Unless you are a fan of the Apple Ecosystem I would suggest you stay away from (definitely one of the most UI friendly devices out there, limitations drag it down). I currently have two HTPCs which I use mainly for watching movies off my server, but also have an Xbox360, PS3, AppleTV, and Popcornhour.
