Although I can usually tell a marked difference in Blu Ray titles and DVD, I am still purchasing many more DVDs than I ever expected. My collection is getting close to 1000 discs now and I am buying more than ever before, but I am finding that with the economy, etc. I just can't justify some of the prices when I can wait a few weeks and pick up a used copy of a DVD for $5. Looking at my purchases last month, I bought 22 discs and only 5 were BDs. Of the 15 SD DVDs (2 were HD DVDs), the average purchase price was $4. I am buying some BDs in that same used category, but they are usually $15 or so.

So, quite often I find myself renting the BD (or HDX version via Vudu) and mentally deciding if I really, really need the BD. If not, I am buying the SD. FWIW, I am also still buying HD DVDs. I have thought for six months that I have every title I want or need, but every time there is a killer sale, I find a few more- at $2-3 I can't resist.

Anyone else in this boat with me?

I will say that I thought I was done buying DVDs, but the prices that you can find for some titles (including true A-list material) is so ridiculously low that I have picked up a few this year.

Given that in Feb. 2008, your HD DVD movie budget was $2500, I am not in the same boat as you.

I put a limit of $2500 on myself for new HD DVDs during this period. Right now, I have bought over 50 and haven't spent 1/4th of the money. When you consider many of us spend well over that amount on our receivers alone, getting 200+ movies in HD for the same price is unbelieveable. Really unbelieveable.

I find it odd that someone complaining about the economy and bluray prices can afford to drop $2500 on movies - at any period in time.

If you're OK dropping $2500 on movies during a fixed period of time - methinks you are a little better off than most, and this economy isn't quite affecting you as much as others, or as much as you suggest in the OP.

No, I wouldn't want to watch the DVD when there's a BD available, and I would think that I could have just rented that again from NetFlix instead of buying the DVD. That $5 could essentially pay for at least 2 NetFlix rentals.

I have been renting a lot more, but that's mostly because I'm finally realizing that it isn't worth it to me to spend $20 or more for something I don't watch often.

Since we've had a number of threads like this (why I'm not a BR fan etc). I'm going to ask that if anyone wants to continue the discussion, please bump an existing thread on the same/similar topic to voice their opinion.
