View Full Version : Your favorite games on the PSP?
Libertarian 06-18-09, 08:56 PM Sup folks, I just bought PSP3000 and upgraded to the newest firmware. It's an awesome little system and I'm looking to create a well-rounded library of physical discs...the best titles from every genre (RPGs, racing, platformer, action, fighting, etc) Gamestop has a buy 2 get 1 free sale going this weekend and I took the chance to load up. Here is my haul:
Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters -$8.99
Wipeout Pure - $6.29
Daxter- free
Patapon - $16.19
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection - $16.18
Ridge Racer - free
Star Ocean First Departure - $16.19
Burnout Legends - $16.19
Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core - free
Star Ocean Second Evolution - $22
Jeanne D' Arc - $16.19
God of War: Chains of Olympus - free
Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth - $22.49
Wipeout Pulse - $13.49
Crush - free
Syphon Filter Dark Mirror - $11.69
Loco Roco - $16.19
Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops - free
Total cost for 18 games (all of which I wanted to buy) - $201 with tax. :)
So far so good? What am I missing? Any suggestions appreciated.
joeblow 06-18-09, 10:27 PM Lol, slow down there buddy! :)
One little known gem in the PSP library is the dload-only title "Beats". It's a somewhat typical music rhythm game where you press the buttons with the beat, but with one twist: you use your own mp3s for the music.
This feature alone makes it more fun to me than GH & RB since I really don't care for rock songs. I much prefer to play along with music that I personally enjoy. Get it off of the PSN for a mere $5.
number1laing 06-18-09, 11:30 PM I didn't like Beats.
Anyway, here are my faves...
Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max - Alpha 3 is an amazing game and this is the best version of it. Guilty Gear Judgement on PSN is also a damn good buy, it comes with the GGXX fighter and a decent beat em up. Only $5.99!
Final Fantasy Tactics - port of the PSX game.
Sid Meier's Pirates! - excellent and elegant sandbox game. A very very good port of the Xbox/PC game.
Mega Man Powered Up! - great platformer. Very challenging, too!
Monster Hunter - the MH series is superb. Freedom 2 is great. But you might want to wait for Unite to come out.
confidenceman 06-19-09, 12:02 AM Other than paying way too much for most of those games (even with a B2G1 deal), looks like a pretty good haul. ;)
I'd second the FF Tactics suggestion. It's much more than a straight up port with better localization (dialogue), animated cut-scenes, filled-out plot, and quite a few gameplay tweaks throughout.
You may want to hold off, though, until we see which version will be coming to PSN. Not sure if the PSN version will be the same as the PSP version or if it will be a direct port of the old PS1 version.
You also may want to check out the handful of demos available on PSN for PSP games.
Regardless, you've already got enough games to last you well into 2011.
Nice selection! Those are all used prices, right?
Anyway, it looks like you are set for a long time -- enjoy!
I'll second Pirates
Hard as hell to find though. Hunt down a used copy.
Syphon Filter: Logans Shadow - good action game if you feel like breaking necks and shooting terrorists :)
Flatout - Pretty good racing game, but looks like you have enough of those.
Stacked - Probably my most played PSP game. I love poker and this is one is cool. Havent tried any other poker games though so I cant compare.
Wipout games are ok, but get old really fast.
Leo_Ames 06-19-09, 04:57 AM Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast, Sega Genesis Collection, and Ace Combat X have been my favorites so far.
Libertarian 06-19-09, 06:50 AM Thanks guys..I'll keep an eye out for all those. ;) I noticed the sale is now live on EBGames.com (http://www.ebgames.com/default.aspx). They don't have everything available, but I managed to snag all of these for $70 shipped with B2G1 and Edge discount.
Flatout
Gradius Collection
Ace Combat Skies of Deception
Mega Man Powered Up
Space Invaders Extreme
Mercury Meltdown Remix
Pursuit Force Extreme Justice
Syphon Filter Logan's Shadow
Field Commander
:)
You sir are the perfect example of why companies should not be trying to get rid of physical media. There is just something wonderful about holding your purchase in your hand, or having a drawer full of games in the entertainment center. I hope you enjoy your new PSP!
bryansj 06-19-09, 09:25 AM Why didn't you use your Goozex account to get most of those games? Most should have been readily available.
Also, if you've never used a PSP for very long you should probably get http://rover.ebay.com/ar/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?mpt=2140939273&adtype=1&size=1x1&type=3&campid=5336055023&toolid=10001 one of these (http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FCarpal-Tunnel-Wrist-Brace-Splint%2Fdp%2FB000UTF1F0%2Fref%3Dsr_1_1%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dhp c%26qid%3D1245417795%26sr%3D8-1&tag=5336055023-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325) if you ever plan on making it through all those games (which I would be suprised if you ever play half of them).
:)

Buy 2 Get 1 + 10% Edge discount made them cheaper..and of course, no need to wait. ;)

Thanks..and yes I really hope they never get rid of physical media. The used game market would disappear along with sales like this. I just got 24 games (all highly rated) for $242 with tax = $10.08 each..much less than they will sell for at PSN, and because I bought them on sale I can probably sell them for the same price when I'm finished which makes them practically free. :)
How about SOCOM Fireteam Bravo or Pursuit Force?
TornadoTJ 06-19-09, 10:36 AM If you are going to buy LocoRoco for $16, might as well skip it and get LocoRoco 2 for $19.
number1laing 06-19-09, 11:10 AM So I made that post last night and realized I was missing probably the best PSP game: Hot Shots Golf. Either 1 or 2. They're pretty much the same.
caledonia1 06-19-09, 11:56 AM I'll second Pirates
Hard as hell to find though. Hunt down a used copy.

Syphon Filter looks good, maybe I'll get this one
i loved Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror...still need to check out logan's shadow.

Space Invaders Extreme to it :D
DarrellG 06-19-09, 12:49 PM Resistance Retribution is a great PSP game.
Also, Every Extend Extra and Lumines.
*Edit* Holy poop! I never knew that Mega Man Powered Up even existed! How did I miss that?
I'm getting it today!
number1laing 06-19-09, 12:53 PM There's also Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, which is a remake of the SNES Mega Man X.
Capcom was gonna do Mega Man Powered Up 2... remake of MM2... but MMPU's sales sucked. :(
Hopefully they will change their mind now with PSP doing well.

joeblow 06-23-09, 11:37 AM Whoa, here's a gem coming out of left field... a PSP upgrade of Strikers 1945 (http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/06/22/strikers-1945-hitting-psp-as-download-exclusive/)is coming exclusively to the PSN next month!
Strikers 1945, a classic vertical scrolling shoot 'em up, is coming to PSP exclusively through the PlayStation Network. Originally released in 1995, Strikers 1945 Plus for PSP will feature new graphics and a brand new "Endless" mode. PM Studios, publisher of DJ Max Fever, is planning on releasing the PSN game in July for $11.99.
IMHO, Strikers 1945 is one of the top five shoot'em ups of all time. The difficulty feels perfect, and the variety of ships you choose keeps things fresh. It has some standard stuff, like power-ups adding to your firepower as well as bomb pick ups and flanking assist-drones. I also like that the first four stages are in a random order, unlike most old-school shooters.
One of the best features of the title is how your secondary weapon's meter rises as you battle. And at any point you can hold the fire button for a few seconds to unleash the fury of your flanking drones on the enemy. Each ship has its own special ability in this area, which range from locked-on focus fire at any screen location you choose to a shield that you can hide behind as it slowly rises to the top.
I'm looking forward to this uber-classic title. I hope they allow us the option to rotate the PSP 90 degrees for a true vertical shoot'em up experience.
Crazy Taxi was ported over to the PSP and is a fun game.
