View Full Version : Toshiba XV645U vs ZV650U
I am confused on these two Toshiba lines, theXV645U vs ZV650U, more specifically the 46" and 47" respectively. Ive found the ZV650 is cheaper, yet its 1" bigger, has more features (divx, etc). Why is one a 47" panel and the other a 46". I guess the panels are completely different? Which is better? Does anyone even know?
Thanks
J
tribestros 06-19-09, 12:08 PM The ZV650U is better, it is essentially a 240hz LCD with ClearCoat panel (like the Samsungs, transparent panel) and 100,000 contrast with Dolby Volume Leveler too.
Thats what'd id think, but it just seems there would be a price difference!
I saw a 40 ZV at Best Buy and it had an awesome picture...Black levels looked on par or better than all the TVs around it EXCEPT 1 TV, the Samsung LN46B650, but I noticed more picture flaws on the samsung, but it did have a better viewing angle.
I saw both those models in the store and I could not really tell the difference. Both were excellent and to me looked to have a better picture then both the samsungs and the sonys. They also noth played SD content better then any other TV that was there. The blacks are so good on both the XV645U and the ZV650U that it was really no contest with the other TV's. I know Toshiba had some problems in the past, but these series of TV's seem to go un-noticed because people automatically think samsung are sony are the top of the line. To my eyes this dos not seem to be the case.
UFO, you are right. Toshibas indeed seem to go un-noticed. When I started researching on HDTV couple of weeks back, I started with Sharp and Sony. Somehow Samsung does not click with me. But when I went to BestBuy, I was really floored by the Toshiba 47ZV650U. As of now this seems to be the TV I would go for. Some people complained about extreme viewing angle issues - and I found none. I spent about 1 1/2 hours at BB and I kept returning back to Toshiba. Of course since I wanted apples-2-apples comparison, I am only referring to HDTVs < $1800. I likes the Mitsubishi, but not heard much about them on this forum. The colors on the Mitsubishi looked natural.
Mikewarrior 06-20-09, 04:57 PM ^ Mitsubishi's are better, but they usually cost more.
CraigSamuel 06-20-09, 06:20 PM I think the 645 has a matte screen which I want to take a look at. Unfortunately, they aren't here in Canada yet...the dog sleds are behind schedule.

I bought one last week 52XV645U at future shop ottawa.
The Samsungs don't appeal to me - most have a too-wide bezel, and quite honestly, I really don't care for their "Touch of Color" at all.
So . . . I was at BB and had a chance to compare the Toshiba 52XV645 to the Sony 52XBR9, the 52S5100, and 52V5100, which were all set up next to one another.
The XV645 and XBR9 were very, very close. Maybe - just maybe - there was a tiny bit more shadow detail in the XBR9, but flesh tones were more realistic and and colors seemed more vibrant on the Toshiba. Also when the B&W part of the demonstration loop was running, the Sony had a bit of a sepia cast to it - the Toshiba didn't. (Hope it wasn't supposed to be sepia tone!)
Both were on sale, but based on what I saw, the Sony absolutely was not worth the $1100 (!) more that was on the tag.
Both the XV645 and XBR9 were visibly better than the V5100 and S5100.
I also took a look a 47ZV650 . . . really good picture, but the screen was glossy - which was very apparent from the reflection of the overhead lights in the store, and I could easily see myself reflected in the screen during dark scenes. The XV has a matte screen, so the reflections were muted; despite the higher specs, the glossy screen of the ZV might be a distraction, depending on where your lighting is.
I'm really looking for a 40" - 42" TV (space limited), and I think when someone local has more than a nominal 10% markdown, I'll pull the trigger on one of these Toshibas. (BTW, I've had a 36" CRT Toshiba for about 11 years now, and the only problem I've had was with the remote; the TV itself is still working fine.)
C-eclipse 06-21-09, 12:49 AM Toshiba makes great TV's, to bad they are underestimated sometimes.
@Mikewarrior
I do not know much about the Mit's sets...do not hear much about them. I did read in a PCworld magazine that they tend to have more defects than the Toshiba's a while back. They had a chart with all the brands listed and the Mit's did not fear to well.
Hank, I completely agree with everything you said. I however think the Toshiba 40XV645U was better in every aspect over the sony. It had much more color and contrast and it was set to standard, while the sony was set to vivid. When the sony was in standard mode, it was even worse. I ended up buying the Toshiba 40XV645U online for 849.99 shipped plus I get like $50 back in microsoft cashback. Good deal!

Where did you order your set from for such the price?
C-eclipse, did you check buydig.com recently? I intend to make my purchase at BestBuy near me. They would give me free shipping and IFS certified calibration at a much discounted price. Coming from a photography background, I am big time believer in proper calibration. Saves TV life and calibrated TVs show their true colors - no pun intended :)

Are you sure it was the 645 because the model isn't even listed on the Toshiba Canada site?
lastdon00 06-21-09, 01:36 PM futureshop canada has the 40inch 645 and i believe the 50+
whereas bestbuy canada has the 46inch in stock
CraigSamuel 06-21-09, 04:41 PM Thanks LastDon...Funny, I have been looking at my local FS/BB stores for a couple of months now and havn't seen them....Quite the price difference between the 46" 645U and the 47" 650U. In fact that is an outrageous difference if the two sets are relative close in quality.

Were they talking about them as a whole, or was it just their LCDs? They had issues with their DLPs at one time (Heat sensor) but I cannot find anything about their LCDs having known problems... unless it's the typical clouding issue that can happen with any LCD.
Mitsubishi, has the greatest tv out! the laservue, so I personally think there Lcd's would be better than average. But when it comes to Lcd's, I personally think Sony's are the best. Then Samsung and Toshiba are a tie in my book.

I doubt you can find another with the % of 5 star ratings, or a better looking set.

Agree, I would take this one all day..Why do companies make it hard to compare? Go for the higher priced because it ought to be better kind of thing?

The only thing I remember seeing were defects, quality, etc. This was a while back but they seemed they were comparing all of the manufacturers as a whole. I do not hear much about Mit's HDTV but I do like the designs and the thin bezels looks very nice. Since I do not know much of them I am not willing to get one. I have only had good luck with Toshiba TV's in the past, but I am sure Mit's good TV's....they do make the beautiful Lancer.
But in any event it might just be their experience and personal opinions, when it all comes down to it only your personal opinion should matter, though nothing wrong with a little input.

Nope, never heard of the site. I will check them out, this set is def in my price range and I like the look of it as well. I seen it in BB the other day and it Looked really good. The only thing I hate about shopping for TV's online is if something is wrong with the one you recieve the return and waiting process is blah! Since I am on a budget I might just consider ordering it from online.
I wish Amazon wouldn't ship out the 40" set within 1 - 2 months. I dealt with them before and they are so easy to deal with returns and exchanges.

40 vs 46 only a 50dollar difference lol (645model)
meaning the 42 650 vs the 47 is like a 500$ difference

There are 6 FIVE STAR reviews and 1 FOUR STAR review by a non-owner who saw it at BB and did not like the glossy screen. So what is your justification for calling six [B]FIVE STAR[B]reviews [B]CRAPPY?

Wow are you serious?
This thread was about comparing two models, now there are Mitsubishi swingers in here and then this?
Dude those reviews are ALL GOOD. The one 4 star is because they guy didnt want a glossy screen and he does not even own the TV!
Its almost impossible to have an on topic mature discussion here lol.
Edit: My bad Joezo, you covered it :)
Interesting how one of the reviews says, "looked better then the Sony's and Samsungs it was next to". I am curious why more people are not checking out the XV and ZV series of Toshiba's. I do agree, they look better then the Sony's and Samsungs.

He must have meant that he didn't like the writing style of the reviews.
The TV he wants, the Sammy B750 (in the 46") has 17 (5 star) and 5 (4 star) big river reviews with complaints of quality control.
About half as good a rating from a percentage point of view.

You know, I noticed this too when I was in BB. Hardly anyone stopped to take a good look. They were all too busy looking for the name brand or whatever the salespersons were peddling. Such a shame really but some of that is just customers not knowing what to look for.
C-eclipse 06-22-09, 02:27 PM I too noticed in these forums when one talks about a certain brand and model of tv, someone has to come in and start babbling about another brand they are loyal to. I think if the OP wanted to know about the Mits he would ask. I am not saying anything is wrong with other brands but fanboyism is not needed.
In any event, toshiba makes really good tv sets and I am looking forward to picking up the xv645u. Now if only amazon did not ship it in 1 - 2 months.
BTW, the zv650u is a great set, I had it but sent it back for a refund, the size was 2 big for me looking for somethign around 37-40" with a thinner bezel, hence my reason to get the xv645u.

Things have started to align. The price point on the XV645u is now below the same size ZV650....
BUT NOW THERE IS A XV648 coming in August!!
I sent Toshiba an email asking the differences and they didnt know?!!? How do you not know the difference between two of your products?!?
Anyone have an idea as to what this XV648U is gonna be?

The 648's are new to me as well, it seems it has a CrystalCoat and Dolby Volume, if these are the only advantages over the 645, I'm gonna stick with the 645.

Check the above link, pictures 11-14 following the reflections and detail above, seem to be from the 648, angle viewing looks awesome.
paulman182 07-10-09, 07:05 AM The 648 is a 46-inch as opposed to 47-inch in the 650 line.
Does that mean the panel is made by a different company?
Who makes these panels, anyway?
CraigSamuel 07-10-09, 10:14 AM People are guessing that the 47" is made by LG as that is their line. As for the 46" which is more common it would be anyone's guess. I asked a Toshiba Rep. that was at our local BB this question and it was like asking for the secret code for a nuclear attack.

When a model is available in 42, 47 and 55, it's most likely an LG panel. If it's available in 40, 46 and 52, it's usually a Samsung panel.

Thats correct. 42,47 and 52 in XV650 and are LG panels. 40, 46 and 52 in the XV645 are S-LCD (samsung/sony). I have the 46XV645 since 7/3/09, and my wife and I are very pleased with the PQ, with very minimal adjustments out of the box. I bought it because my wife prefers a matte/semi-matte screen, less reflective than the ZV650. Incidentally, I saw today a 47ZV650 at Pacific Sales, Irvine, CA (a B&M) offered at a price which matches the lowest online prices.

I'm very satisfied with the side-to-side performance of my ZV650. Above and below it washes out badly--not a pleasant TV to watch if you're leaning against a wall or moving around in the room. I really don't see what cnet saw, and I didn't see the weak blacks when comparing TVs in the store, either.
Since I've bought this TV I've moved my viewing location to front and center, anyway...
neogeo64 07-17-09, 07:31 PM Just picked up the 46xv645u myself. Still in box as I need to install the mount this weekend. Picked it up for 1089.00 + 99(3yr) warranty from Videoonly. :)

well the LED 670 suffers from poor viewing angles but has very good blacks. the 645 on the other hand doesnt have viewing angle issues and the blacks are very very deep. the 670 has a glossy finish as opposed to a matte on the 645. you be the judge. the upcoming 648 is basicaly a 645 with a glossy finish. and the 670 next to a 645 on a side by side comparo, i gave it to the 645 those blacks man even next to the sammy 7000 LED were just very very deep for a non LED set. i own a 52XF550 and its got very deep blacks too as reviewed by profesionals compared to sony and samsung.. the late comer XV545 had deeper blacks still than the sammy A650 or sony W4100 as reviewed by cnet. the newer sony v5100 has near or better blacks than the XBR9 but next to the XV645 and XV670 was hands down. XV645u is bad a** man period.

I bought a 40XF550 last August from Costco and it has been performing very well. When Costco was offering the 42ZV650 online in early June, I was hoping it would soon offer the 47ZV650, which I intended to try out in my den/living room area, being somewhat concerned about screen reflectivity. Much to my surprise, Costco appears to have stopped carrying Toshiba TV's, with the exception of some leftover sets. When BB offered the 46XV645 for $1097. (with delivery & setup), I decided to try it out before the ZV650. My wife is very happy with the non-reflective screen, and we are both satisfied with the PQ.

Hello, I'm a french user of TOSHIBA 42XV625u, witch is the same of xxXv645.
Could you post your picture settings, I don't found anything on tweakmytv
Thanks
The issue is with HDMI input on this Toshiba, from calibrating the TV it appears that only the Video range is passed through as anything out side of it is cropped off, however using VGA this does not appear to be the case. This is withe HDMI option set to full range in setup, I've asked Toshiba about the issue and am waiting on a reply.

davenport47 10-12-09, 11:09 PM I was seriously considering a Toshiba 635U at BB about a year ago. I was amazed that the set looked better than either the Sony or the Samsung. Then I had them switch all three sets from Vivid to Standard mode. Suddenly the Toshiba didn't look so good by comparison. So I wonder if those of you who were comparing the 645U in the store were comparing in the usual store's Vivid mode.
davenport47 10-12-09, 11:18 PM Correction: I believe that was a 535U from a year ago, not a 635. Anyway, my point was that comparing sets in the store's Vivid mode is often deceptive, and I found this especially true with the Toshiba. Comments welcome.
eneyman 10-12-09, 11:45 PM Hey guys with the 645U, can you tell me how this set does with xbox 360 games? Is there any lag or pixelation etc.. Also, I plan to watch alot of standard def feeds through directv, how is the SD quality?? Lastly, are there any problems we should know about?

ckelly33 11-27-09, 12:17 AM Just got this TV and I am a "semi-"professional installer. This unit will not consistently lock on to the HDMI signal. When it won't, it just flickers. This occurs with my Bluray player, my PS3 (both 1080p) and NOT with my HD TiVo (1080i). I have all three hooked up via a Monoprice 3:1 HDMI switcher and running into HDMI 1 on the TV.
I have done the following without success:
1. Changed HDMI cables
2. Moved from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2
3. Removed the HDMI switcher and ran each source directly into HDMI 2
4. Changed both from outputting 1080p to outputting 1080i
5. Unplugged the AC power to my TV for 1 hour and tried again
I them moved my components (PS3 & Bluray player) to another Toshiba (40" non-Regza 525 series) and both work in 1080i & 1080p flawlessly.
I then performed a reset via the menu on the TV and tried again - it worked for a few hours. Next time I powered on, I got no picture again with those components, but I still got picture via the TiVo.
Each time I have done a reset (except for one), this solves the issue for a short while...then it fails again.
After all I have done:
1. Aafter failing on multiple cables - the cable is not the issue.
2. After failing without the HDMI switcher, it is clearly not the issue.
3. After moving to a different input, the ONE input is not the issue.
4. After moving to another TV - the components are not the issue (they worked).
5. Resolution is not the issue - each component has worked AND failed at 1080p, 1080i and 480p.
Is there anything else I can do short of returning the TV?
Has anyone seen or heard of these issues before??

That's a new one. Sounds like a lemon. Let us know how the return goes.

The return process went smoothly....only problem is, despite that I made no furher changes, within 24 hours of arranging the return I had no more problems with the unit. I hope the don't charge me a restocking fee because they can't find anything wrong with it!
yespage 12-10-09, 10:25 AM Hey guys with the 645U, can you tell me how this set does with xbox 360 games? Is there any lag or pixelation etc.. Also, I plan to watch alot of standard def feeds through directv, how is the SD quality?? Lastly, are there any problems we should know about?
I recently got a Vizio 37" at Target for home. Got the Toshiba for my parents. The Dishnetwork is hooked to a DVD recorder via a Coax line (yeah... a coax line ) and then fed to the tv via Component (as part of the DVD portion of the setup).
So the Dish is feeding to the tv via coax and the picture doesn't look any worse than watching an analog tv with the same setup. It is clearly not the best setup and will be upgraded, but the SD signal does look as good as an analog. The screen is grainy, but not jaggy. The Vizio not as good and is my comparison point.

I havee the 52", and the set does wonderfully with Xbox 360 games, as well as Wii and PS3. I have not noticed any lag, and I do not even put the TV on Game Mode. Everything is connected to a Yamaha receiver befre going to the TV, but that should not make a difference. This TV performs better than I expected when I got it.
Has anyone had any issues with the screen being way too dark? I followed some calibration settings in another post and when setting it to HOME from STORE it reduced the overall brightness way too much. It's hard to pick out shadow details the way it is now.

No.

I think you've identified the problem.

No.

You're cool.
I found the brightness issue arose when switching the display from Store to Home initially. Store looked nice and bright, while Home was much more subdued.

That's what store display is intended to do. Jack up the brightness so it can compete with all the other displays in a brightly lit retail store. Very unnatural but can make a good initial impression which is all that counts in a B & M.

I bought a 55ZV650U a couple of weeks ago and I have no complaints about lag with XBox 360 games. I've played a lot of Forza 3, Tiger Woods 10, and Battlefield 1943 on it. I can't honestly say that I've seen any performance problems associated with lag.
Pixelation? None that I've seen. I leave the sharpness setting on 0 to -2. Perhaps if I turned that up I'd see some, but I'm very content with the natural balance the "0" sharpness setting yields.
Also, I plan to watch alot of standard def feeds through directv, how is the SD quality?? Lastly, are there any problems we should know about?
I'd say the standard def quality on this set is above average. My JVC rear projection LCoS was horrible on standard def, so this was an unexpected surprise. I watch very little standard def content though... our local cable provider has just about everything I watch in HD.
ROMAN O 01-13-10, 12:48 PM I bought a 55ZV650U a couple of weeks ago and I have no complaints about lag with XBox 360 games. .
THis is the feedback I have been getting as well.
jah.volunteer 01-24-10, 04:42 PM if a TV doesn't have a USB port (such as the 46xv645u I believe), how do you get firmware updates to the TV?
I have a 52XV645U that will be delivered next week. But now I'm wondering if I should've went with the larger 55" model. I paid $999 for the 52", and the 55" dropped to $1500. The only problem is, that the 55" seems to have a glossy screen. I really wanted to stick with a matte screen. So what to do? Keep 52" for now, or cancel the order and get the 55" for $500 more? My viewing distance is about 10-11ft from TV.
I was also looking at some offerings from Sony in this price range, but the Toshiba's seemed to look better to me.
GoCheese 01-26-10, 08:55 PM Thats correct. 42,47 and 52 in XV650 and are LG panels. 40, 46 and 52 in the XV645 are S-LCD (samsung/sony). By all means get the XV645u-sorry to bust everyone who loves the XV650 but move slighly to the side while viewing an image and watch how your blacks dramaticaly turn into grays and image washout reviewed by c-net too. No such thing on the XV645 and the blacks WOW. Watch for a review on cnet it will top the XV650 and 670. Oh 670's are s-lcd panels too.
So the 2010 Samsung 55 inch LCD with 240 Hz must use the same LG panel if you go by that logic...
empire29 01-27-10, 11:03 PM Anyone experiencing a buzz/whine coming from the back of their XV645U units? I received a 40XV645U (manf date: aug 2009) today and assumed it would be silent (or pretty darn close) but it emits a high pitched buzz/whine from the back, easy to hear if you put your ear by the rear input panel.
Can anyone else with a XV645U check to see if their TVs have a buzz/high pitched hum coming from the backs of their unit? It should be very easy to hear if you stick your head behind your set (at least mine is). Debating mailing it back for a replacement.
If anyone can weigh in on this it would be appreciated. Thanks!
fatuglyguy 01-28-10, 12:35 AM We have a 55zv650 positioned right above a 52xv645 and the 645 wins in pq, hands down. the colors are a teeny bit more vibrant on the 650 but the blacks cant hold up to the 645 at all.
UOFLcards 01-28-10, 12:40 AM For what its worth I purchased the 52XV645U just this past wkend. Looking to mount and set it up this wkend.
I will post my thoughts on this set later on but Im sure that it will be highly on the positive side since I already own a Toshiba and its a great set.
empire29 01-28-10, 09:25 AM fatuglyguy, UOFLcards - Can you do me a favor and pop your head around the back of your 645U when the room is quiet and see if you can here a buzzing/whining noise? If you put your ear right up to the rear-input panel you should be able to easily hear it (if your set it suffering the same problem as mine atleast).
Thanks
TheOnion 01-28-10, 10:13 AM ^ Mitsubishi's are better, but they usually cost more.
PCworld just released reliability rankings for HDTV's and Mitsubishi came in dead last. Even behind the discount brands.

Hey, I am a 52XV645U owner since 9/09 and I don't have that buzzing sound.
However I do have a separate audio issue. Randomly after watching the TV for an hour or so the audio will go somewhat haywire...it suddenly sounds like there is an echo and there is a lot of fuzz to go along with it. Switching between HD/SD channels and back will usually fix it, but sometimes the TV needs to be power-cycled. No idea what triggers this or what can be done. I don't even see where to look on the website if there's any newer firmware.
Other than this issue I am a fan of the TV ... black levels are very good, picture is excellent for a semi-matte finish, and side-angle viewing is OK (looks slightly washed out). I do feel it lacks a little bit in shadow detail and flesh tones, and it takes a little too long to switch from SD to HD content, but it is a good TV overall.
GoCheese 01-28-10, 06:26 PM I went with the 55zv650 and couldn't be happier, I compared that and the 52xv645 and the pop and blacks were no contest, the 55zv650 just stood out that much more.

i saw a review on CNET and someone else has my sound issue as well. they described it as "mechanical" which certainly fits the description.
I just purchased the latest Toshiba model 46XV648U. This set is great, the local dealer had the Sony Z5100 on one side and a 46inch Samsung on the other and this set blew them away. Price point is about 3-400 less than the Sony. Also the latest Consumer Guide has these listed as there best buy, great set for the price.
I've had the 52" for a couple weeks now, and couldn't be happier. Although sometimes I wish I would've went 55"+. But the 55" Toshiba had a glossy screen finish.
I calibrated using the Spears & Munsil Blu-ray that I bought off of Amazon. Come to find out, the default sharpness of "0" puts a lot of artificial sharpening in the image. Had to turn it down to about -24. Also turned down the color saturation. This disc really helped to produce natural looking images, and still looks great for my XBOX and PS3. I would highly suggest people to get this disc. But it takes awhile to use it and read the instructions to use each set-up screen.
I just bought the 40XV645U, does anyone know where to buy a new/used base-stand for it?
Thanks!!!!
