I'm trying to help an old, poor woman who lives in a rooming house with the transition to DTV.

We got her a converter box, connected her RCA ANT145 antenna and did a channel scan on the box. Took about 10-12 minutes. Got about 5-6 stations.

This antenna has a 12-position switch for fine-tuning. Would I be able to get more channels if I played with that switch?

Playing with the switch could help, minimally, its much more useful on analog where small improvements are observable on screen....not with DTVs all or nothing reception.

Posting her TVfool would help.

There are things you can do to increase the performance of that antenna, but lets see if its worth the trouble describing them.
