View Full Version : What is the deal with Dish??
Sundance 06-19-09, 08:57 PM They seem to have turned in to a company looking for nothing but money and let customer care fall where it may, much like cable and cell phones.
I am with Comcast now and since it appears they have no interest in getting firewire running again I figure I would go back to Dish:mad: and maybe get the R5000HD mod done to a box.
So I call, first time, told the guy I want an 1 year contract, no 3 mo. or 6 mo. HD, 2 rooms, a 722 or one room (use as a dual tuner DVR they can't seem to understand) and the 2nd room I have my own box.
His reply, he fumbles around and final said I couldn't have a 722 for one room, it a two room device and I can't use my own box but I can buy a 722 because they can't provide one unless I use it as my primary tuner for 2 rooms.
Second guy said I could only get a 2 year contract.
What is the deal, I can't get what I want, am I not the one paying the bill???
Is dish no longer allowing people that have their own equipment subscribe to their service?

You can get whatever you want as you are the one paying the bill.
If that means you want to pay 2x the amount in year one and disconnect, they will certainly allow you to do that as you will have paid the equivilant of 2 years.
So yes, you can get what you want. You just have to pay what they want.
And, btw, be aware the the R5000HD mods cannot be done with the new E* series units anyway. You're only really choice is to buy what you want and just subscribe with no install from them. That way you can subscribe month to month if you so desire as you have not accepted any equipment or an install from them (nor anything free).

What series units? The newest I know of (and I'm not up to date on what new equipment dish is offering) is the 722 and I think it can be moded.

The boxes that Dish has sent out for the last year or so are the 722k and 211k, however, they look identical to the older 722 and 211, but they are different internally and cannot be modified. People still call them the 722 and 211 as they look the same and beside internal differences, they are essentially the same (except Nextcom cannot do anything with the newer K IRDs).
You will get a k if supplied by Dish.
Thus you have to buy a non K unit (and hope it really is a non-K unit) if you want Nextcomm to modify it.

Dish supplies the 612 as a one room DVR. That was your mistake in not requesting two rooms. The other poster is correct about the k units as well.
Every one does 2 year contracts now--both Dish and DirectTV. I know they used to do 1 year contracts-but those days are over. If you want a 1 year contract, contact AT&T. If you don't want a contract, purchase your desired equipment. (E-bay is your friend; just verify the R and S #'s before purchasing.)
Rammitinski 06-20-09, 08:06 PM Doesn't Dish still have the "no-contract" option when you forego the free installation?

You must also forego the free upfront equipment. Buy your own equipment, install it yourself and you can go month to month. A new VIP722K can be had for about $400.
u may not want to hear this but the best solution is to not play their greedy bs games....do NOT subscribe to ANY pay tv service!
they want u to pay $80 or more per month to watch endless/mindless commercials, info-mercials and lots of re-runs!?!?!?! thats insane!
get yourself an fta (free-to-air) satellite receiver and a 36 inch dish....that plus an OTA (over-the-air) tv antenna will get u lots to watch...and all for free!
the pay tv crooks will never get another penny from me....guaranteed!

I hear what you are saying and I agree but I have already drank the cool aide. I'm hocked of a few shows (mainly SciFi chan) and have to have my hit.:o Have looked at FTA and sorry to say it just doesn't offer what I want.
