View Full Version : Non-symmetrical placement of dual subs ??
deepstang 06-22-09, 09:31 AM OK, I now have a new option for dual sub placement....key word OPTION. I was leaning towards one big bad sub in a non-ideal location, but the wife said I can place a sub under the coffee table in the back left corner of the room.
So, in reference to the title....is it a total NO NO to have a sub placed in the back left corner of a room....and then have the other one placed to the right of, and almost in the middle of the room.
Look at my pics to understand:
1 sub will be placed under this coffee table in the back left of the room. (IDEAL location as far as corner placement with my options)

The the other sub will be placed here (kind of in the middle of the room against an adjacent wall)...(referred to as NON-IDEAL placement)
-notice my black Veldoyne in that current spot-

(still need to remove those silver Energy speakers from mantle:o)
The MAIN seating are will be along that back wall...but of course auxillary seating options will be on the "L" sections too.
swgiust 06-22-09, 10:06 AM In most cases, having the subs in different places is the right way to do it.
Helps smooth out room peaks and dips.
You may find that the arrangement you are considering may not balance well. My concern is that corner placement, whether front or back, gets much more boundary reinforcement. The other sub would be in a location that gets minimal boundary reinforcement.
IMHO, if you went this route you would be a perfect candidate for the SVS EQ-1, still available for $699.
deepstang 06-23-09, 10:51 AM Yeah, I was thinking that this sounds like that Velodyne SMS-1 system would have been helpful....but DARN, i just went back to Outlaws site and their sale price of $299 went up to $499!!
With that price it is either get 1 sub and the SMS tuner....or 2 subs w/o SMS-1.
I e-mailed various ID sub companys and here is their advice:
HSU response:
"There are pluses and minuses to going with two smaller subs vs one bigger sub.
The two smaller subs can help smooth out frequency response, but may be more
difficult to set up and integrate, and may also not play as deep as the one
bigger subwoofer."
SVS response:
1st response:
" While it can be tough to predict the effects of the placement you've suggested, you'll at least have both subs close to the seats which will help quite a bit dynamically. I don't see an ideal spot for a single large sub (the rear "corner" looks open to me), so two smaller ones would likely be your best bet. A pair of PB10-NSD or PB12-NSD would be pretty killer in that space!"
2nd response:
"The best thing to do by far is to try and map the FR of your various placement options. Check out Room EQ Wizard over at Hometheatershack. Very cool freeware!
Dual PB10's would be the easy choice near that budget. They're shipping right now with a full-featured amp for adaptability to even more types of systems, a new aluminum cone with etched logo, and a new 3.5" Ultra port. The new port yields about 2-3 dB (25-40%) more acoustic output at the same distortion level (CEA 2010 distortion-limited tone bursts) over the ~20-30 Hz band (where the port is most active). Re-tuning the system and using a larger port resulted in more usable output over the intended pass band with less potential for port noise. Just a killer sub, and in pairs is appreciably more potent than even the PB12-NSD."
I just talked to Scott at Outlaw audio...and he is a great example how Outlaw is a step above with customer service and knowldge. I will try a few of his tricks to figure out my best placement options...and try and post the results.
Any other advice or comments will be appreciated.

You got some bad information. The SMS-1 was on sale for $399 not 299. Even at 399, you don't get the benefits of the SVS EQ-1.
Most important the EQ-1 was designed from the ground up to handle 2 subwoofers indepedently. The SMS-1 can only make corrections for 1 sub at a time. It can't make corrections for two subs at a time like the SVS.
The other big difference is that the EQ-1 can operate in the time domain, not just the frequency domain. According to people in the know, this is well worth having. Someone else can try to explain what happens with the time domain.
Nice! Any interest in moving the couch a couple feet from the rear wall and putting the sub behind it in the corner? You can put something like a narrow table, or tall plant behind the couch too, to make it look right. I've done that. Granted you lose a little floor space, but the sub would be corner loaded, located by the seats, and you can have one big sub or two smaller subs, colocated or separated. Plus, you'd be closer to the tv. :)
sivadselim 06-24-09, 04:03 PM Try it and see, deepstang.
Do you plan to level-match the subs or gain-match them? ;)

Haha!! I love our rationale for moving the couch forward. The room is a bit small, and it is the main family room...so i really can afford to loose more space by pushing the couch out more.

You know what..... I have no idea:o!
After reading all the stuff it takes to properly calibrate 2 subs for 1 room, I am getting a bit aprehensive. I will have to try the trick given to me by Outlaw and see which spots are really viable for the sub. If i can get a half way decent room response from that positon at the end of the sectional...i will just have to get an even beefier sub to compensate. I will run that test, and let u know
