Hey guys, I'm new and just wanted some educated help with my projector. I'm going off to college and want to have Sundays (a.k.a. NFL games like FOX and CBS) in HD. If I have the extended cable of 100 channels, how do I get just the basic channels in HD (NBC Fox ABC CBS)? Do I need to buy an antenna of some sort?

Thanks for the help!

It all depends on what will be available at school in terms of cable vs. OTA. If the school provides cable where you'll live you have to find out if the signal is in clear QAM or you'll need an STB and if the HD version of the networks is available. Most cable cos have the networks in clear QAM and HD - so you'd need some sort of QAM tuner with HD output your projector can handle.

If HD is not available via cable, then you may get the local networks in HD via OTA. The antenna you'd need depends on distance from the transmitters. You can look up what you need at either tvfool or antennaweb. For this route you'd need an ATSC tuner to feed the projector.

Assuming you'll have a good enough laptop for school there anyway, you can use that in combination with a USB tuner to accomplish the above.

it has been a rough couple months trying to get my projector repair for college.

i finally have it back! i have an acer p3250, and i'm going to be in a college dorm on campus.

i have an hdtv already and i get hd channels, but i dont have a hd tuner for the projector

how exactly can i run the process through my computer and get hd?

i realize that the college cable traffic could be rather hectic for an antenna, but any and all help i appreciate

i have so much to learn!

how exactly can i run the process through my computer and get hd? You would need an HD tuner for your computer. One with an ATSC tuner if you are going to use an antenna. One with a QAM tuner if you want unencrypted HD via cable.

Theburman09,

Tough question without knowing the specifics of where you live and what is available over the air (OTA). Assuming you have nearby HD locals, OTA is the way to go. If you have a desktop computer, buy a Hauppauge 2250 or 1600 video capture card (cost is ~$100). WinTV software is included with the card and is okay for watching live tv and/or recording the occasional program. There's better software out there such as BeyondTV (commercial) or GBPVR (freeware). For more discussion, check out the HTPC sub forum.

HTH,

Rick

After researching it on these forums, I've heard a lot of good things about the Samsung DTB-H260f high def tuner.

On campus at school, the cable service is Comcast, and we get HD local networks (NBC FOX ABC CBS, and a couple other random ones like PBS) running straight out of the wall for a regular HDTV.

We called Comcast and they won't let us buy a HD cable box because we're not paying for the cable service (the school is).

In terms of the projector, would this satisfy the requirements to get the big 4 HD networks?

We're going to be using this projector for the next 3 years and we want high-end quality.

What do you guys think?

Well the Samsung DTB-H260f does have a QAM tuner which is what you need to get the HD locals from the cable company.

What do you guys think?Assuming the local HD channels are provided by Comcast, and they are not tampered with by your school, which can sometimes happen as they insert their own channels, you should be able to use any QAM tuner to get all the local HD Comcast carries, and typically it's as good as it gets.
