Ok I just resigned up for cable and I have a little problem. Sometimes while watching HD channels I get no sound. I have a picture but the sound drops out, for example I see the people talking but no voice. Also this has happen on HBO HD and NBC HD, I switched to another HD channel and there was the picture and voice. What is happening, I have a 2 week old sony tv? Is it my HD cable that I got from monoprice not working together with TV?

Its not the HD cable from Monoprice.
What is the source of the HD cable channels? A PC or a digital tuner from your cable company?
Some cable suppliers encrypt only the sound on their subscription channels such as HBO HD instead of both video and sound.

The source is what I like to call the real great satan (lol) Comcast Cable!
I have their Hd cable box.

What resolution over what interface from the STB to what make/model TV or display when receiving HD channels?
Are you subscribed to HBO HD with comcast?
What is your Zip code?
Do you get CBS HD without any problem?

More importantly, how is the Comcast STB connected to the TV for video/audio?

HDMI from box to TV direct?
HDMI to AVR then to TV?
Toslink? Digital coax? Red/White analog audio to AVR or TV?

Ok thanks to both of you so I will try and answer both questions at same time and not the best audio person so bear with me.

1zip code 19119
2 no problem with cbs hd so far, more with nbc hd and hbo hd
3 yes I am subscribed to hbo hd, came with package
4 i have sony 46s5100 tv
5 my connection is from the hd digital box (i guess it confirgued for hd too?) by hdmi cable direct to tv hdmi connection.
6 OOOO yea left something out only on sunday with hd nbc looking at us open, i had my mini shelf denon stero connected to tv using analog cable (red white) and was getting sound thru that too, i had my input speaker (switch marked for audio system instead of tv.
7 but monday night just listening thru tv speakers and sound dropped out for about 30 seconds.
8 tonight I switched connection with same cable and no droped sound watch master and commander dvd
9I am beginning to think it just might be comcast cable signal from their feed? instead of tv or cable, could i be at least partly right?
10 much appreicated

Sorry, but I can't follow your responses as clearly as you intended.

suggestions:
1) unplug TV and cable from wall power for 20 minutes.
If that doesn't resolve your audio dropouts...
2) call your cableco to check/replace the cable box and/or check signal levels.

Try a Toslink optical cable from the HD cable box instead of the HDMI for audio. You may have to tell the HDTV what input (Optical or HDMI) to look for the audio on.

Ok Ratman I will try your suggestion, I thought of that last night, but waited to see if their might be something else going on? Also I have already called them (comcast) to alert them to my problem. I switched devices, I put my dvd player on the same hdmi cable that I had my tv connected to and watched a movie for awhile and no sound lost.

Plus I also noticed this is happening too, last night I was on a HD cable channel. I wanted to watch a show on the digital part of my cable package. So I typed in the channel number for the digital channel on my (cable remote) and when it went to that channel the sound was there but no picture. I got alittle surprised then hit return channel and did it again and it worked. It might have been I did not have the remoted aimed correctly or is this might be a sign that the box, signal, or cable is messed up? I am guessing the signal strength? IN any event I will be calling cable company and unplugging tv for 20 minutes. Will be reporting back with results.
MUCH appreciated.

So lets work from the prospect of not getting happy results from cable company (have not called yet). Are toslink cables expensive? Also having no audio knowledge I would go to radioshack, target, walmart and look for a toslink cable (sorry not a total techie saying with respect) and this printed on the outside of the package right?
thanks

You can double check, but I don't think your TV has an optical (Toslink) "input".

I think you are right but will double check on not having optical in? So I am answering from work right now. I'll probably call cable co. when I get home.
It might just come down to a case of getting a new cable box.

OO ya almost forgot someone at work mentioned that it could be anything from the outside connection at my apt. bldg. too alot of traffic on the cable line in the bldg.. Since he was saying that it is basically a broadband line to begin with and if people in the neighbor or bldg. are down loading and streaming video it could affect the overall signal, meaning just too much traffic online. I guess this might be correct but will be trying your suggestion.
thanks

Ok ratman I tired your suggestions and it seemed to work. I did not get any drop out of sound from tv last night. I did not call the cable company either.
I wanted to see what the end result would be and right now happy for now.
thanks
