I am looking at new subs for my house. My theater room is 13X17X8 and has a door size opening into another room that is 15X9.
Doesn't matter when I can get them, These all will fit in the space I have, these are all pretty close in cost, just looking for the best for me.
I listen to mostly Movies. The subs I am looking at are a

Epik Sentinel $874 Shipped

SVS PB12 Plus 2006 model on Ebay probly under $700 shipped

EDa7s450 $850 Shipped

ED A5 350 800 Shipped

MFW - 15 around $600 shipped

Not sure what to think about a used SVS on ebay but may be worth a shot
ED also has a b stock A5 350 downfiring that may be worth a look too

What does everyone think?

For maximum output, I'm guessing that the A5 - 350 would be the winner.

i have never used any other sub on your list other than the Epik Sentinel, but i can say that it is a very capable sub. i have it in a sealed 2,500 cubic foot room and it does very well.

i highly doubt anybody has heard every single sub on your list, so it will be tough to get a real fair comparison.

I'm also looking for a sub and am leaning towards the A5-350. My room is slightly bigger than yours at about 2600 cu. ft. compared to your 1768. I've narrowed it down to Epik and ED. I ruled out the Sentinel 'cuz I wanted at least a 15" driver, & I ruled out the A7S-450 'cuz I wanted a ported design. I read that ported was better for HT, while sealed was better for music. The MFW-15 has an incredible price, but the reliability issues scared me away. The B-stock A5-350 is a discontinued model, I think, but I've heard the price is pretty good, comparable to the MFW. Good luck.

I formed the same opinion from my many hours of research prior to my last sub purchase a few weeks ago. That all went away fast after I fired up my new Sub 12. IMO, it comes down to two main factors, output versus precision. With ported subs you will likely get more raw output per dollar, but I think you trade off a little accuracy at the same time. If you just want slam for movies you'll probably prefer a ported sub. If you want your bass to be a little more controlled and accurate, maybe you shouldn't rule out the sealed designs yet. As it turns out, I prefer the sound of a sealed sub for HT, and my Sub 12 pounds with authority at the same time. I do admit that I haven't heard any of the highly rated ID ported subs though, so take my opinion with a small grain of salt.;)

OP,

Based on my many hours of reading here, any of those subs on your list will likely be very good. If I were you, I would probably steer clear of the used PB12-plus, and maybe the MFW-15.:)

i can tell you that the Epik Sentinel sounds awesome for music. it sounds very tight, accurate, and controlled. it's the best sounding bass i have heard.

That is great! Proves that many great subs are out there. I bet you I put in about 50-60 hours of reading on this very forum leading up to my recent Sub 12 purchase. It's an invaluable resource, and helped me in making a very informed and well thought out decision. I've read lots of great feedback on the Sentinel and Epik subs in general. I look forward to hearing some Epik's sometime down the road.:)

What is a sub 12, Brac? Is the old stock A5 350 downfiring sub a good one or is the new one much better?

I purchase a Sentinel to paired with my MFW-15. I did an A/B comparasion. It fell short of the MFW-15 in the following areas, slam. extention, and articulation. I returned the Sentinel and order another MFW-15 with the new amp. Craigsub rate the MFW-15 as being crystal clear as any sub they have ever heard. The A5-350 tied with the MFW-15 in 20Hz but was edged out slightly in the 20-63Hz output. In articulation the MFW-15 was the clear winner. The PB12 fell short of both the MFW-15 and the A5-350. Should the new amp work as design, throw in an excellent finish, the lowest price of the bunch makes the MFW-15 the clear winner. Good luck

well to make it fair, the MFW-15 is a 15. the Sentinel is a 12. so it will have more slam, more extension, and maybe sound more articulate because it won't be pushed as hard to get as loud. a 15" driver won't have to work as hard.

paeast Was that the old a350 or the new design you are referring to? If I can get an old stock a350 with free shipping it should be about the same price as the MFW 15.. What about the 18" A7

I kind of got the OK from the wife today so I went ahead and ordered a MFW 15
I could have got a A350 downfiring b stock for a little less but I think this will outperform it. Not by much but any little bit is good.

I really wanted an SVS but there was nothing in this price range that I felt could compete with these two subs.

Thanks guys for your input.

I apologize for not getting back to you sonner. [tied up with work] Apart from my experience with MFW-15 and Sentinel, all other comments was taken strictly from an independent/blind study conducted by craigsub. IT,s located on page one of the eD thread, title: link to suwoofer summary. It was published in early 2008. Unfortunately the 18-A7 was not evaluated. I spoke with Mark Schifer the owner of AV123 recently. HE re-assured the redesigned amp work extremely well, with 55w increase, which gives the MFW-15 1-2db increase at 30-65Hz.

Nope, A7S-450 gets louder across the spectrum.

The math doesn't compute for a 55 watt increase, if it exists, to add 1-2 db over a 350 watt amp. In order to get a 3DB increase you need to double the wattage. A power increase of this level would not be noticeable (less than 1 db difference, or below the human ears ability to notice a difference).

Now the increase is up to 55 watts. I put as much stock in this as I did in the report from a salesman at AV123 that the new amp was manufactured by BASH. It took a post by Mark Seation to make it clear that the new amp WAS NOT by BASH.

Next they are going to tell you that the MFW-15 actually has an 18 inch driver, (that just looks like a 15 inch driver).
